Of course, Melania Trump was an undocumented worker and illegal immigrant

Curious all the news reports I've seen say H1-B, including one of the agencies that she modeled for.

Even H1-B requires one to leave when the work contract runs out. Thus for her to return to NYC she would have to reapply, whether as tourist or sponsored.

Work visas are rather simple to understand: they are sponsored by the employer 'who brings you over'. As soon as that contract ends... pack your bags and leave. Technically even when changing employers one needs to leave the country and reenter after a new worker visa is granted.

Worker visas are tied to the employer who initially hires one. Outside that... the door's there. Exit and reapply.

I also saw the news reports saying H1B. It's possible she was on an H1B if she was, in addition to being a model, employed in some non-modeling capacity by an agency based on specialized knowledge. For example, if in addition to being represented as a model, given her linguistic abilities, she was also employed as a translator and in some quasi-technical capacity. An H1B requires, at a minimum, a bachelors degree or the equivalent experience based expertise. According to reports, she is fluent in four or five languages, which would easily meet the requirements. That would be unusual, but not unheard of.

Personally, I would guess that they were simply wrong about what type of visa she was on. I am sure the FOIA requests are flowing from various news agencies, since there is nothing private about being issued a visa.

As anyone who has a technical body of knowledge about any process or field, the media often simply gets it wrong, usually since they like to over-simplify and in many cases, for the writer, the story is about the story, not necessarily the details.

Yes, but you don't have to leave every few months to get a stamp.

I would expect a sponsor to know which visa was applied for.

You're trying too hard to read something and to catch them. Wait some weeks and the WaPo fact checker or the NYT will have submitted a FOIA request and actual facts will be known.

Sorry if that doesn't sell as well though. Too bad.

For something which happened around two decades ago? Right.

Trying too hard to be Trumpian.

Actually I don't really give a shit one way or the other.
