Old School Musicianship… Rock and Roll.. Jazz… Blues… Big Band even…

Sit back. Yeah, grab a beverage. Its cold here today, so I'm having whisky...

This morning my entertainment feed had a story entitled "The top 10 Ringo songs from the Beatles"

Uh, what?

Ringo sang lead on exactly 11 songs. So which one did they leave off the "top 10"?

This one. Matchbox.

I don't know why.

But once again my grandson asked a question. The next song that came up on YouTube was "Roll Over Beethoven"

He asked about the guitar part.

"Oh, that came from Chuck Berry."

"Who's he?"

Friggin' kid. So I explained Chuck's place in Rock and Roll. How almost every hard rock guitarist was influenced by CHuck's hard driving guitar, and has to know at least one Chuck lick. I played this:

..and explained how many times it was covered. I talked about Jhow Jeff Lynn practically owns it.

(At least he put his own creative spin on it...)

And about how the Beach Boys stole it for "Fun, Fun, Fun" (and stole "Sweet Little Sixteen" for "Surfin' USA")

(look them up)
These kids have no idea how great the music was in the late 50s and early 60!! Lots of the British stool songs from that time. Or, you could call it honoring these rock groups! It all depends on what side of the fence you're standing behind.

How did Tan get me to go from Jimi to this? No idea. I just was inspired to post this song, which I think is amazing.

I absolutely love that guitar sound in this... well, the whole thing, really.

The Rolling Stones - Monkey Man
Great track, from a great album.

My favourite Stones song is "Hinky Tonk Woman"*. But I love the first version from this album, "Country Honk". A little rougher. It's also fun in the car to see who looks back on the "car honk".

A seriously underrated guitar pioneer. I think of this every time I hear some guitar hero use distortion.

* Actually, it's my second favourite. My favourite, for complicated reasons, is "Sister Morphine". Not exactly a hit, but an intense song.

If you give a young person a grounding in good music, they will find their own contemporary go9d stuff. My son introduced me to Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats:

Good, new stuff is out there.

And the other song I loved back then was Jukebox Hero by Foreigner

They had some fantastic songs!
I was in high school when this came out. Which was 20 years ago or so…. In my mind. Imagine my surprise to find out my high school reunion was last night… the 40 year reunion! What in the holy hell is going on? How did I get this old? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

hehehehe My school was so bad we never had a reunion. But if we did it would over 50 years OMG!! I should be dead!!!

My first thought was "damn girl, you are old as"...oh, wait...I graduated grade 12 in '76, 48 years ago.:ROFLMAO:

So, obviously you are a sweet young wisp of a girl. Quick! An obvious distraction! How about a song that was't written so much as being allowed to evolve from dust and broken guitar strings?

Sweet Child 'O Mine

OH, not enough of a distraction? Look! A Neil Young song!

Dedicate that to Jack Long, founder of Long and McWade music shops in Toronto and all over Ontario. Jack died yesterday at 90. The scene in Wayne's World where the guitar shop has a sign that says "No Stairway to Heaven" was based on the L&M store n Toronto where I used to go and drool over all the amazing instruments then go home and play my dad's battered old Framus acoustic with a pickup and a big old Ampeg Jet amplifier.

Good morning.

My local (not very good) radio station just played that stupid Kid Rock song. You know the one. The one that gets people like me mad.

Stay calm Tan. Remember your blood pressure. Listen to one of the real songs he ripped off (badly). Maybe have a Bud Light too...

Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon. ("Little old lady got mutilated late last night" what a great line!)

Thanks, Tanstaafl you really know how to cheer someone up! :)) I may be old, but I saw all the best bands and I'm still dancing just not as fast!

And Monday morning deserves my all time favorite Stones track.....

The Rolling Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knocking

Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock 'n' roll and drift away

Sounds good to me. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
