Old School Musicianship… Rock and Roll.. Jazz… Blues… Big Band even…

HEY! its been a while.

On Saturdays I listen to the 70s station on SiriusXM. They play recordings of American Top 40 from the 70s three or four times each weekend. Last weekend the episode was from 1979, but as usual, Kasey Kasim was giving out bits of music history.

This time it was the subject of "Misheard Lyrics". The song? The all to familiar Disco hit "Jive Talkin'" by the Bee Gees. 4

Now, I despise Disco every bit as much today as I did in the late 70s. So I wasn't paying that close attention. Kasey asked if the listeners knew ho the song started? "Sure" I said out loud "J-J-J-Jive talkin'. You're tellin' me lies..."

"Its not J-J-J-Jive talking." said the voice of AM Radio History. The actual lyrics are "Its just your Jive Talkin'..."

He then played that shameless ripoff of a dozen songs I like (you can hear the opening riff from "Superstition" in this song's intro). DAMMIT! He's right.

Get you ear plugs kiddies and campers. Jive Talkin' by the Bee Gees.

I'm gonna cleanse my ears with something better. Does anyone know why Jimi wants to "kiss this guy?"

Fine. Clearly, you need to be schooled and the genius of Jimmy Smith. 🥰🥰🥰

Jimmy Smith - Got My Mojo Workin'

Well.... now I need to hear some more Larry. Here he is redefining how the bass can be played...

Sly & The Family Stone - Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)

Well... if you are going to bring up Ray... then I need to hear...

The playing is incredible, and the organ sound is so tasty... just cranked up enough for the tubes to start breaking up, but not too much... just perfect. This whole song is, perfect.

Ray Charles - What'd I Say

How many years has Kasey been dead and, they're still playing his recordings. and in the 50's category they have Pat Boone as a DJ. Jesus he's got to be 90!

Well, now I'm in a mood...

Stevie Wonder - Superstition
AFIAC, that's one of the four greatest hooks in popular music. The other three...

Long, Cool Woman in a Black Dress by The Hollies

Takin' Care of Business by BTO (C-Bb-F if you want to play along*)

Back in Black by AC/DC

*I can't play a Bb worth a damn. Its an A-bar chord; my fingers don't work that way. But once upon a time there was a attempt to set a Guinness record by having the most guitars play at once, in Toronto, and this was the song. (I think it was Canada Day). I practiced and worked on it until I could get something close. It was cancelled at the last minute. I have never tried again.

Casey passed away in 2014. Yeah, its kinda spooky.

I googled Pat Boone, he is indeed 90. To round it out, Peter Asher, now 80 is on the Beatles channel regularly.

🥰 🥰

I loved it too.....Jeff Beck had such a unique style.....If you listen to Roger Waters-Amused to Death....Jeff Beck plays the intro portion during "Bill Hubbard" segment right before "What god Wants Part 1"
Dangerous distortion, serious sustain!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I loved that album.

Waters....."Too Much Rope"......this will be a double music installment.....with these songs being back to back.....this song most certainly applies to the politics of the day.....with the beautiful guitar works of Snowy White at the end
