I'm going to go out on an unpopular limb here---I HATE phone sex. Now, admittedly, I had it ruined for me by working as a phone sex operator. Although my stint in this profession was brief, it was more than enough to convince me that most people's sexual fantasies (at least the ones they take to others for instant gratification) are hideously unoriginal. The whole thing was a big yawn.
AND, I was perhaps the only person in the late 80's/early 90's who thought that Nicholas Baker's _Vox_ was tedious and definitively unsexy. If I'm going to operate on a purely fantasy-level relationship with someone, I prefer not to hear their voice, or know that their baby's crying, etc. I like the anonymity of cyber-life encounters. The phone seems like an uncomfortable hybrid of anonymity and intimacy, which I think is largely self-delusion. Pick a side and COMMIT! Then again...
