Petty Pet Peeves

Most of my teachers objected to it quite strongly. The only two who didn't were the one who was a medical doctor first and the one who also had a PhD in kinesiology. It's probably largely dependent on the culture in the area.
My diploma in 'Anatomy, Physiology and Body Massage' (as opposed to what, mind massage'?) emphasised the importance of getting the -euse/-eur ending correct, and the teachers wanted to use the words to help avoid them being claimed only by dodgy sex types.

I got the impression that 'massage' was more associated with sex in America, because of the use of the term 'backrub' - which was explained to me as an unqualified person doing a massage but avoiding the term massage because that sounded dodgy. Ironically all the chaps I ever met who used the word backrub were definitely wanting to do a massage with dodgy connotations.

On the subject of autocorrect - why is it that my (Android) autocorrect can correctly recognize 'wakizashi' and 'Chewbacca', but constantly screws up 'we're' and 'he'll/she'll'?
They really messed up Google Keyboard's autocorrect about 18 months ago. Hell gets turned to he'll, most of the time, its to it's, and perfectly cromulent words get autocorrected to a more common word after I've moved on to the next.

And in particular, any words with a hyphen are ignored rather than the second half being treated as a word and corrected as needed.

Ideally I'd use a keyboard/autocorrect config where I could edit those things and also pull commonly-used symbols to the main keyboard rather than having to go through 3 extra presses (the % sign in particular), but no-one seems to have made a decent configurable keyboard app.

FYI - you can insert many symbols with a long press (hold for about a second instead of just tapping) on the default Android keyboard, at least on a Samsung.
For example, the % is a long press on the G key.

Yeah, that's why most of my teachers were so resistant to the words masseuse, and masseur, and why it's probably so regionally different. There was no sexual connotations tied directly to massage, but in that area there definitely were ones tied to those titles. Which is also why massage therapist in the area were the ones leading the charge to require a certification to get your massage therapy license.

Thanks - I use the various symbols all the time, but haven't found an option to move any to the long-press category from the '?123’ and then '=/<' keyboards. G hosts the ampersand on my keyboard.

Doesn't really seem worth getting a Samsung phone just for a %. The one I had years ago was loaded with immoveable bloatware. Not that I'm a fan of this Pixel either - my next phone will be back to a Motorola Power for a battery that lasts a day properly, two or more to start with.

Sorry, what's a massage therapy license if it's not a certification? Someone doesn't allow massage therapy in the area if you don't pay them off? The Mob has moved into a new protection racket?

There are some places where you just pay a fee and get a license. Or at least there used to be. We had a legal teacher too. o.o

Anyways, certified license in this case means you have to attend a school, and pass a test to get your license.

Good point on big/little. The current fascination with 6ft plus tall men escapes me. Having dated someone more than a foot taller than me it can create some very odd dynamics when you make the beast with two backs.
My dear late wife was about a foot shorter than I am.

It's the concept of creating licences to be able to massage that boggles me. Either require someone to have a qualification to do something - in which case no other licence is needed, or don't, but then there's no licence. Requiring extra paperwork - presumably paying a fee to local government - just strikes me as weird.

Yeah, requiring a license without needing to prove that you're qualified for the job is just, crazy. But well, there are crazier things going on in the world right now.

Any Joe Schmoe can give backrubs at one of those chair massage places in malls and airports.
Certified massage therapists require hundreds of hours of book-learning and hands-on training in anatomy & physiology, multiple therapeutic techniques, and most importantly, how not to accidentally injure a client and what techniques should or should not be used on clients with specific injuries or medical conditions.

Yokel claims to be in finance.

Then complains when their bank doesn't post transactions instantly 'making it hard to know how much is in the account' .

I came across a story last night that used the phrase "a hare's breath".

Grrrr

That does surprise me - I'd expect the malls and airports to require workers to have liability insurance, and insurers want to see qualifications.

Whereas if someone sets themselves up in business and gets sued for incompetence because they weren't planning on offering anything beyond happy endings, that's on them.

The venues most likely do require liability insurance from the business owners, but generally those shop and kiosks don't require the employees to have CMT credentials.
