Now, one could make a case for a shotgun as a home-defense weapon -- if only because working the slide makes a recognizable sound that you can use to get an intruder's attention without opening fire.

That is one of the reasons the M-14/MiA is not considered an Assault Rifle, it does not use an intermediate round. Although it has been vilified for having a flash hider and bayonet lug. But anti-gun folks don't recognize the distinction between 'dangerous' and 'decorative'.
