The legal firearm is just one of the many means of inflicting violence upon your fellow man. It makes it easier. If you are serious about making your society a better place, find the reasons why people off each other.

Criminals
Accidents

All of which can be combated by legalizing drugs less dangerous than alcohol (Cocaine, Weed, Psychoactive things) and raising the average level of education so that people can get legal jobs that sustain them and do not have to resort to crime.

Those so called "Assault Weapons", a term that traces its roots back to Hitler btw, are chose for home defense because they are easy to use, you get consistent hits pretty quickly and if you miss, you only have to pull the trigger again to shoot another round.

With a shotgun, you will have to rack the pump action again, which can be the difference between the intruder getting shot and you getting shot. The AR15 and it's ilk do not have that drawback and make a pretty menacing sound when you pull the charging handle too. Let's not even get in to pistols, teaching those and becoming proficient requires thousands upon thousands of rounds.

Lastly, you may have noticed that the NY Times and the likes have seemed biased towards Hillary Clinton during the election. That bias may have conformed to your political stance, but does it not worry you that this bias might also be shown towards firearms and other topics? Remember 2003 and Iraq?
Could it not be that they are deliberately scaremongering against firearms and omitting the reports of citizens with a concealed carry permit stopping an armed gunman trying to shoot up a school, mall etc.?

Bullshit. Check out the murder rate for the US compared to the UK and Australia. And check out crime rates for the UK and Australia. What the statistics show is that guns do not decrease the overall crime rate and increase the murder rate.

Pistols are by far the easiest to shoot. A toddler can kill someone with a pistol. A pistol can be used much better in the interior confines of a house. A pistol round has far far less recoil than a Bushmaster firing NATO rounds.
