Poetry for killing time

excerpt from Roethke's 'What can I tell my bones?'

To try to become like God
Is far from becoming God.
O, but I seek and care!

I rock in my own dark,
Thinking, God has need of me.
The dead love the unborn.

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favour fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Ouch! a tale of pain.

and now a moment of joy:

excerpt from Robert Lowell's 'Waking Early Sunday Morning':

O to break loose, like the chinook
salmon jumping and falling back,
nosing up to the impossible
stone and bone-crushing waterfall --
raw-jawed, weak-fleshed there, stopped by ten
steps of the roaring ladder, and then
to clear the top on the last try,
alive enough to spawn and die.

Stop, back off. The salmon breaks
water, and now my body wakes
to feel the unpolluted joy
and criminal leisure of a boy --
no rainbow smashing a dry fly
in the white run is as free as I,
here squatting like a dragon on
time's hoarde before the day's begun!

Picturing the movement makes me think of my dog and the pure joy he takes in running and jumping.

The chinook reminds me of the beauty of my homeland. Flying over the drumlins, loughs, and coast of County Down seen from the tail ramp of a Chinook helicopter. The contrast between the warbird and the beauty of the country still perplexes me.

For MY BabyGirl

Come Soar with Me.

I come to you in the night
and whisper in your dreams:

"Let escape from these shells.
Let's leave them far below.

Oh, come soar with me
let my touches free your mind
let my kisses free us from time

soar with me where
the eagle dares not go
to where we see the very glow
of God's face begin to show

Oh, come soar with me!"

I've decided to make
my heart go cold
I'm tired of being hurt
I will treat you as
you have treated me
it's time to realize
I'll never have you
to hold.

I'll never have you
to hold
I'll turn the other way
I will watch you from
a distance
it's time to let go
I've decided to make
my heart go cold.

Until The End:

She stood there looking out

As the waves rushed in to shore

She could not help but wonder,

"What if there were more?"

To be loved fully,

To be loved completely,

To be loved for exactly

Who you are?

Now as she stood there

Looking out to sea,

A thought flitted cross her mind.

If this world should

Break in two...

I will love you until it is the end of me

And until it is the end of you.

The loneliness hits me today
The air is cold, and wet.
I listened to you talk today and
It made me think
“this isn’t what I signed up for”
days alone
mothering alone
worrying alone

I heard you talk about her
Your new woman
You talked about her son
It made me wonder what I could have ever done
Would I have ever been enough?

I do not want you back.
I do not miss you
I miss the idea of you
I miss having someone else to be in charge for a minute or two
I am tired today
They miss you today

I do not have the words to explain
Not to explain to little hearts
They ask why you are not here
But I can’t tell them.
They need you to be their hero.
They need you to love them best
They need you for the magic
The magic that passes between father and daughter

The loneliness hit me today
Watching couples wander through the stores
Watching men carry their children
Rushing through the rain
I wish I could have been enough
But no one can fill the hole inside of you

She wont fill it either
Another mother and child left in the cold.

Sir Victor,

It has been my experience with this thread that it is for original pieces of work. There are other threads for songs, in fact I started one. It is Lines form a Song. Thanks for the songs, through, they reflect powerful emotions.

Fundamentals

The basic principle is this:
Like speaks to Like
So They say
Who is 'They'?, I ask as

A kindred spirit
With eyes of amber
Stares back at me
My soul is mirrored as

I see at once, with wounded eye
So curious a thing as
The quickening of the Spirit
My spirit; as

I exhale.

A friend sent me these poems. I just had to post them here.

Roses r red,
nuts r brown,
skirts r up,
pants r down,
body 2 body,
skin 2 skin,
when its stiff,
stick it in

Roses are red
violets are korny,
when I think of you
Ohh baby I get horny,
Freak me,
Beat me,
Bite me,
Blow me,
Suck me,
fuck me,
Very Slowly,
if you kiss me,
don't be sassy,
Use your tongue
and make it nasty!!!

Sir Victor: Thanks for your effort and inspiration, though. There are no rules really, anyone can post whatever they want in any thread, but certain threads develop a kind of spirit. Being moved to post the lyrics of songs is very close, to my mind, to the spirit of this thread...were it not for the fact that other lyric threads exist.

Horus: thanks for your gentleness in suggesting your sense of this.

Thanks.

I have enjoyed reading and posting here.

My Angel

Of all my pet names for you,
one couldn't be more true!

You have come into my life,
and taken away such strife.

You were the answer to my prayers.
I was jealous of other pairs

who seemed happy, in-love, and content,
treating each other like they were heaven sent.

I had looked to the Man up above,
and ask him, where is my love?

A woman who will always be true,
and My Angel, He sent you.

NEW MOON

The new moon, of no importance
lingers behind as the yellow sun glares
and is gone beyond the sea's edge;
earth smokes blue;
the new moon, in cool height above the blushes,
brings a fresh fragrance of heaven to our senses.

By D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930)

Childhood by Rainer Maria Rilke

It would be good to give much thought, before
you try to find words for something so lost,
for those long childhood afternoons you knew
that vanished so completely -and why?

We're still reminded-: sometimes by a rain,
but we can no longer say what it means;
life was never again so filled with meeting,
with reunion and with passing on

as back then, when nothing happened to us
except what happens to things and creatures:
we lived their world as something human,
and became filled to the brim with figures.

And became as lonely as a sheperd
and as overburdened by vast distances,
and summoned and stirred as from far away,
and slowly, like a long new thread,
introduced into that picture-sequence
where now having to go on bewilders us

Memory

As fragile as it is stong
As bitter as it is sweet
As old as it is new
Nothing passes by without being written on the page
But finding the page again is the quest of a life time.

Sullivan Sq.

You wear skirts of highways and minor boulevards, rouging your cheeks with brick red and dust. Your morning routine is complete with smokestack mascara and a perfume of legacies, once vibrant and gaudy, now mellow and rich. Your brooch is a feral dog, curling in upon itself for warmth. Chain link adorns your neck. You do not strut or preen, bracing instead against all things called inevitable. You are friendless. Your solitude is willful and sweet.

Your paramours drink their diesel and retreat, excusing the work that they must do, far away. You bless them anyway and wish them godspeed. They will return to you and never be turned away.

You see your guests away in the dusk, knowing they will come and go again and again. Even those who sleep three-deep in your embrace are on their way elsewhere, fast or slow. You know them only as the fleeting thoughts and daydreams of an afternoon.

Terrific!
Why did I not know you had something like this in you?

Even when the silence follows the clamor,
the rain follows the thunder,
When the pulse follows the beat of the heart,
a dismay arises out of nothing.

The noises made the air tremble
and made the mood slip away like ink,
brought a nothingness that filled the spaces
that wanted to be filled in other ways.

Time knew its way
but didn't share.
