Politics in erotica

I think that the tossing in of political statements purely because the author can is like the way a director does in a movie like "The Day After". In the time span of several weeks the world is tipped upsidedown. Yet the President and VP take a lam-basting because the didn't do anything about "it". Like all of the administrations before them are not also or specifically to blame.

Explained as a hit piece on the current administration, cinimatically there was absolutely nothing to be gained by creating that tension. The conflict didn't advance the storyline, it was simply an opportinity to bash.

I believe erotic lit is the same way. If you're doing a "Celebrities" piece about the Veep and how he gets a blowjob from each assistant to see if they are good enough or if it's a piece about the lesbian secrets of the first lady, then as far as I'm concerned, that would be on-topic and maybe even interesting.

However. If two people just had a fantastic bout in bed and are dripping with sweat and panting hard I cannot see dialogue along the line of how awful the administration is by opening up roadless areas in the wilderness. It would be simple pandering and IMHO not only unnecessary but open to be flamed.

And yes, I'm a Conservative Republican. I just believe that all that far right bullshit restrictions on erotica is just that, bullshit.

I think it depends entirely on the context of the story, the characters portrayed therein, and the medium you're trying to write for.

I think there's another consideration - your motive for writing at all. Are you writing for yourself or for readers? If it's the former, then who cares what kind of feedback you got? You wrote the piece for yourself and you were satisfied with it when you submitted it.

If you're writing because you want other people to read and enjoy what you've written, then you have to analyze the feedback you get. Clearly, there are some people who will always find something to criticize in any story/poem written, but often, readers do offer constructive criticism. (Having said that, I am still chapped at two women who e-mailed me to blast me about a story I wrote in the Nonconsent/Reluctance category, about what a horrible person I am to write such a horrible thing. I responded to them both, suggesting if they didn't like that particular category, perhaps they should read from others. . .)

That is definitely another consideration I did not properly cover in my first post, but I think for the most part authors are all trying to write for some kind of audience out there. But there are probably those out there who buck the trend and go for whatever makes them happy - and thats good for them, if its the way they want to work then that's all that matters.

But I really do believe, myself, that it really comes down to THIS with politics in erotica - does it BELONG in the story? Does it somehow enhance or fill out the tale or the characters, and if it doesn't, then what is it doing there?

This worries me a little. If someone is truly writing for their own pleasure, and not for the reader's benefit, why do they post their stories on a public board?

Of course, if they don't post their stories we would never know they had been written, so the question would not arise..

That is a riddle wrapped in an enigma, isn't it? Honestly though, I don't presume to speculate on why other authors write stories, because it doesn't really serve any purpose to do so. But the one's who think they might be writing for their own amusement/gratification might just well be writing for an audience out there, but may not have come to accept that.

I don't know, I only know why I write, and that is for the people interested in my stories, and to improve my skill-set.

I don't think there is enough mixing of genres. I think politics in erotica or erotica in politics is great!

Depending on the mix affects what label it should have. Is it political erotica or an erotic political story? Some people might like one, but not the other.

Anyway, maybe it is a sub-category, in which case it may be that only a small minority would appreciate and/or enjoy it.

I mostly write for my own enjoyment, and rarely finish the stories, so I rarely put them up for the public to read. Although I do tend to put some on my blog to get some occasional feedback, but I know hardly anyone reads my blog.

As long as you don't make it your agenda to convince people of anything - I think you should be able to put anything you want in a story.

As others have said - giving a character or story traits makes it more unique. One writer wants to let it be known he/she likes bbw's, the other mature, the other married, the other wants it to be in italy, the other wants it to be about sports and the other wants to involve politics.

A good story is a good story, that's all that matters.
