Franken seen as reluctant 2020 candidate

Political associates of Al Franken say they think the Minnesota senator could be talked into running for the White House if he believes he’s the Democrat best positioned to defeat President Trump.

But they say Franken would need to be convinced and argue that the former “Saturday Night Live” star would be reluctant to enter a battle with a slew of other Democrats in what’s increasingly expected to be a wide-open race for party’s nomination. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Franken's Minnesota colleague in the upper chamber, is seen as a possible presidential candidate.

“He's not the type of person to crawl over everyone's dead carcasses to get to the White House,” said R.T. Rybak, the former mayor of Minneapolis and a Democratic National Committee vice chairman.

He said Franken would make a good presidential candidate because he’s authentic. He argues Franken could win for the same reasons Trump did, while maintaining that the Democrat is the real deal.

“You can really imagine a discussion with the American people that gets beyond the bologna,” he said. “Right now people are so desperate for something that is real, that’s the reason they accepted a charlatan like Trump.”

Authenticity is a sparse commodity in today's political life.:)

Al isn't younger, isn't female, and I don't know if he's expressed goals. So he's not the guy to help the Dums "win again".

My view: The Gups have been busily breeding local candidates for years and the Dums haven't. Tip O'Neill said, "All politics is local." Dums have let Gops take over school and community boards, town and county councils, district and state offices, much of the lower infrastructure, at least outside urban complexes. So the Dums lack a pool of new talent to engage a wide populace.

Dums failed their groundwork. Can they change? Will they continue to exist?

Yes, I would prefer that Democrats concentrate on congressional and local elections up to the 2018 elections, using Republicans' quagmire, reactionary agenda, and tepid resistance to Trump to inform voters, and not bother to focus on possible national leaders until after that. The 2018 elections will help identify presidential candidates for 2020 and Republican Swiftboaters won't be given specific targets to do their tear-down jobs on for as long.

Having a platform of specific goals and a unified front against the RWNJ's would be a good first step to success in '18. Discussing many potential solutions to the nations problems and focusing on the economy and the budget would force the Repug's to explain their positions as well.

That wouldn't be my priority. Attacking the needs of building support in each specific and diverse voting district would be my emphasis--do as well as possible in the congressional and state legislature and state house races in 2018, taken stock after that election, and decide what to do from there to achieve actual results.

But then, I emphasize being practical and achieving goals, not pie in the sky words.

Democrat discovers cost of moderation in age of Trump

For many Democrats, when it comes to the most divisive and unpopular president in modern history, there is only one word they want to see uttered in the context of Donald Trump's future, and as California Senator Dianne Feinstein has found out in recent days, painfully, that word is “impeachment” and certainly not “patience.”

“Look, this man is going to be president, most likely for the rest of this term,” Feinstein said at an event at the Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco earlier this week. “I think we have to have some patience—it’s eight months into the tenure of the presidency.”

Feinstein went further still, saying there remained reason to have faith in the Republican in the White House: “I just hope he has the ability to learn and change—and if he can, he can be a good president.”

She did not have to wait long to learn how her comments would be received. The audience immediately greeted her words with boos and shouts of, “Oh, come on.”

Removing the Republi-crats in '18 should be the first step. Dianne has apologized for the Repubs so long she's forgotten she suppose to be a Democrat.

Dems will vote for who they are told to vote for

maybe antiFa will be telling you who to vote for, democrat

maybe antiFa will be telling you who to vote for, democrat
Maybe bright, colorful butterflies will flutter gaily from elephants' arses.
Maybe POTUS will discover that reality DOES impinge upon his fantasies.
Maybe Nazis and KKK Confeds will realize their nation-crushing errors.
Maybe Harvey will reverse itself and return everything to as it was before.
Maybe. But I've a bridge to sell you. Nice bridge. Low cost. Cash and carry.

Jack, take anyone off this list over 65, any non party member, any black, any female and any one with Washington credentials - all are un-electable. What have you got left - one person?

Pilot's right, wait until after 2018 and see who is left standing. Probably no-one on that list.

Paywall -- I can't read the list.

Doesn't matter.

Dums have too much to lose in the midterms where they'll be stomped in Congress, losing any hope of legislative impact. Dums in Congress will be like Gups in California, a tattered remnant of once-great hope. Difference is that Calif has free and fair elections and much of USA doesn't. Gups will make sure national elections continue rigged for the foreseeable future.

Well, the list is bullshit anyway. It looks like a DNC wish list of Establishment shills that will toe the party line and do the big donors bidding.

Istat, I have to agree that a younger candidate is needed Tulsi Gabbard and Nina are progressive Party Democrats but the DNC will never even mention them for fear that the people will realize that the DNC is just pushing puppets.

Hmm I shoulda put any progressive on my list of exclusions, to easy for opponents to label socialist . Learned about Gabbard on Google but all I got on Nina was the Southern Oscillation Index! :)

Here ya go. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_Turner

Nina Turner (born December 7, 1967) is an American politician from the State of Ohio. Turner, a Democrat, served as a member of the Ohio State Senate from 2008 to 2014, and was elected to be the chamber’s Minority Whip in the 129th General Assembly. A supporter of the progressive movement, Turner has been characterized as a rising star in the Democratic Party. She endorsed Bernie Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016[1] and became an active surrogate for him.[2][3]

Born to working-class parents in Cleveland, Ohio, Turner began to work part-time at age 14, in order to help to her mother, who struggled to provide for Turner and her six siblings.[4] She received a Master of Arts degree from Cleveland State University,[5] and began her career as a legislative aide in the State Senate. She was elected to the Cleveland City Council in 2005, and served in the council until her election to the State Senate in 2008.[6]

In 2016, she was offered the role of vice-presidential running mate by Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein, but declined, citing her commitment to the Democratic Party.[7] Since then, she has remained active in progressive politics, and became President of the Sanders-affiliated group Our Revolution in 2017, taking over from former Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver.[8]

I think comparing herself to Clinton is a bog time mistake. The democratic party has to get it through their heads Hillary is the issue, people voted the other way not for that ignorant ape, but against her.

They need to move away from liberal candidates, they need to get the message across that these left wing extremists who hate their own skin and scream about how 'intolerant' this country is does not represent their party.

People fear the far left more than the far right because end of the day they're far more violent and far more racist and nazi like. They, not the right-who I am not a supporter of BTW- are who is destroying free speech and democracy

Keep bringing up Clinton and they're just handing the next election to the republicans.

But it won't be Trump, he is not long for this job.

Welcome to the madness Calista85.

What I find interesting is that the Democrats have gotten so far right that the 'Centerest Dem's' are almost what used to be called "Moderate Republicans" and the "Left" is lead by what used to be called "FDR Democrats".

Henery Wallace who was FDR's second VP would be called "Far Left" today.
"He founded the Progressive Party and served as its presidential nominee in the 1948 presidential election. He was a strong supporter of New Deal liberalism and sought conciliation with the Soviet Union." (from Wikipedia)

Hiya!

I think the thing is what we have now are radicals. The alt right is not the average republican or conservative. The liberals who spend 24/7 finding things to be offended about then attack it like a lynch mob are not the typical democrat.

Centrist is getting to be a popular term and what I hope for is a centrist party and a strong candidate rising from it.

The message that will win 2020 easily is one that is about people not party, The two party system has failed and each party now has more factions than you can count.

Time to start anew.

Nice dream but as both parties have worked long and hard to insure they stay the only two flavors of choice no new party or blended group is going to get anywhere.

Wake up people we elected ourselves out of running our country and are too stupid to take it back thanks to 60 years of insider rules and laws we have never heard of.

The Media, Hollywood and Rich elitist have us boxed in and are now fixing the internet to end any future Trump type wins from upsetting their plans.

Want to fight back reclaim your Town back from all forms of Left wing retard thinking , schools, collages, police, elected officials .
No more taxes, no more laws and smaller government, end welfare and secure the borders.
Or just go stand inline for the newest iPhone or stupid PC movie .

If you don't like your information and entertainment media, don't consume them.
And as Scoop Nisker said, if you don't like the news, go our and make your own.
If you don't like your political representation, actively support their opponents.
And if there are no good opponents around, become an opponent yourself.

Enough of that. IMHO unless Tromp manages to fatally wreck the Guppy brand, Dummy candidates will be crushed in 2018. The Gups are set for insurmountable control of both houses of Congress, and control of more statehouses and legislatures. Dums ain't gonna get a unified message together; faction fighting ensures that. Bernie's Babies ain't gonna take control from the corporatists, not for many years. We're fucked, kids.

people voted the other way not for that ignorant ape, but against her.
.

She won the popular vote by over 3 million votes. The electoral system got her. People didn't vote against her as much as they voted against any other candidate in the perspective you offer.

It's over. Hillary won the nation and lost the game on a real technicality. 2016 is over. Move on.

How many more state houses and governor's mansions did Dums lose in 2016? The DNC presidential takeaway is likely that their strategy worked but they tactically fucked up in a few counties, so more of the same will win the presidency in 2020. How many more states will be lost in 2020?

I found some maps somewhere, I think by googling HOW MANY STATED DO DEMOCRATS CONTROL. Big bright map showed than Dums have total control or veto-proof legislative majoriies in just SEVEN states. Gups own 27 states. The rest are divided. Piss on Dums.

The system is fracturing. Establishment Dummies and Guppies play their corporate suckoff games. Enthusiasts and rank-and-file left-behinds are desperate to decapitate corporate control -- but it's near-impossible to run without lotsa money. When money is speech, corporatists will shout-down all others. Then we get the best gov't money can buy.

I am not optimistic.
