Price of Gas! (Rant)

I put $65.00 into my tank today and it still wasn't full. But they are Canadian dollars so I think that's only about $2.50 US

What amazes me is how the price of gas can go from $.72 per litre to $.87 per litre in one day.

Come on in, the water's fine... :D

If the weather holds, I'm going to the lake on Sunday. I think I'll go to Nolin though. The offer is always standing if you decide you'd like to go sometime.

If it were to cost me $65.00 to fill up my tank I would have to bike anywhere I went. Though, I guess in Canada that's asking to freeze to death. :(

My van had a 15 gallon tank. The last time I filled it, the damned thing cost me $35.00 and I would be lucky if I made it a week and a half on that. (Just driving to and from work, about ten miles total.) I dropped it off at the dealership with less than half a tank of gas in it today.

Gas is priced at $2.09 right down the street from me as of this afternoon. Still a hell of a lot better than it is in Europe though. (My new little monster gets roughly 38 M.P.G. as quoted from the previouse owner.)

My truck gets about 17 mpg. Actually that's pretty good for a V-8 4wd.

Best I can figure my boat gets 2 1/2 to 3 miles per gallon when I run full throttle. Dat sux.

You want proof of how stupid some Americans are? Do you know what the number one complaint that people had about their new Hummer H2's last year was? Poor gas mileage. Well no fucking shit you morons... it's a freaking office building on wheels.

BTW... Hyundai Elantra Wagon... 14 gallon tank x 30 mpg x $2 gallon = 420 miles on $28

Hummer H2... 32 gallon tank x 12 mpg x $2 gallon = 384 miles on $64

You rock CD.

We thaw out occassionally.
And snowmobiles are some kinda fun. And you can go ice fishing...for snowmobiles...no bait.

Heating oil is over $1.80, as well. On a per-BTU level, natural gas the same. Most people in Maine who own homes invest in several different heating options, one way or another. A wood stove can save your pipes and keep your children warm when the power's down. Apartment dwellers are at the mercy of fortune.

End of an age

Reality check guys.

The age of oil is coming to end. Petroleum/gasoline will never be cheap again - in fact it is set to go through the roof.

Sophisticated mathematical models 25 years ago predicted oil production would peak in 2005. We might go a few years beyond that, and annexing Iraq will soften the blow to the western economy - but its essentially all downhill from here.

In a nutshell, oil production has peaked, or close to it - and demand continues to rise (if not from us of the west, but from developing economic behemoths China and India). It is estimated that near to 40% of the world's total oil reserves have now been used - and this factors in oil reserves NOT YET DISCOVERED.

So, this is how I justify my apocalytic hedonism.

All good idears. My redneck bf is actually considering buying a Honda, he's lost all hope, poor baby. Gas is $2.13 for regular here. My car is a V6 and gets about 22 mpg, so it's not too bad. I don't really go anywhere since I don't work. I wonder if before long we'll be in a Mad Max situation where we're all brawling over a gallon of gasoline. If so, I want to wear that outfit Tina Turner wore, meow. :catroar:

$5.70

On the other hand, this is a place where I don't really need a car to go places.

Not needing a car is the function of mass transit systems. This is the most anti-rail administration in a quarter of a century. Amtrak is deteriorating. It represents too small an investment in the oil industry, since it is an efficient system per passenger-mile.

This administration opposes conservation measures, efficiency measures, and alternative energy sources. Not too surprisingly.

Maybe it's worse now... but when I was in the US last time was in Clinton times. As an alternative to roads and flights, travelling by train was pretty much a bad joke back then too.

A 200HP Bass Boat?

You got some damned fast fish where you live, doncha?

I spent $38 for 16.5 Gallons of 87 octane unleaded yesterday at $2.299. It should last me a month or so -- not because of good milage, but because of lack of driving.

Ok, here goes...

It should be even more expensive for you lot, you fuel guzzling, emissions emitting nation of big-engined freaks.

Wouldn't be so bad if the US hadn't pulled out of the Kyoto agreement.

My heart bleeds for you that you have to pay "so much" for your fuel, while the rest of the world chokes on your fumes.

You asked for us to weigh in. ;)

But see, we the people are suffering for things our government does that we don't believe in. Yes, the majority of the American people are fucking idiots - just look at the results of our last election - but some of us are right-thinking and there is just nothing we can do about it.

Ahhh democracy.

PS - Lou, my car's an import that gets 30 mpg highway. No guzzling for me.

While I can sympathise with Lou's sentiments, the fact is the only real difference in petrol (gasoline) prices across the world is the amount of tax each government chooses to charge.

My (British) government thinks it's a great idea to charge 400% tax on fuel - i.e. the cost of the fuel is only one fifth of what I pay. As a result, I pay around $7 a gallon, meaning my little Subaru costs virtually $100 to fill up.

Incidentally, unlike most of Europe, in the UK diesel is as expensive as other fuel. It used to be half price, but then people started buying it, and the government saw another way of raising revenue it could spend on something else. Like a war in Iraq. Or the bloody Dome.

Perhaps I could go by public transport? Well, from here to London takes almost as long as flying London-New York, and a return on the train costs around $100 US.

So, no.

I paid 99 cents when I left strakville for Jackson first of the year. It went up steadily as I drove north, and was 2.08 here in NY. It's now 2.16 at the local citgo

The hand-painted sign staked into the ground near a neighborbood gas station reads:

Mission Accomplished:
$2/gallon gasoline

I'm lovin' my new hybrid right now!
