Problem with <hr>

I did a pretty exhaustive test of supported tags, and also find hr both stylistically useful and unproblematic when I submit (by pasting into text submission box like @mrs_mackenzie ).
I actually keep a story in my Lit drafts which has a bunch of tags, as a reminder.

One warning, the "story preview" view supports a few more tags are actually allowed.

All eight stories where I used <hr> have now been published.

In three, a horizontal line appears on screen; in five, it doesn't.

For the correct ones, the HTML is on one line:
<p><hr></p>

For the others, it is split across three lines:
<p></p>
<hr>
<p></p>

I have reviewed the source documents, including hidden format marks, and found no differences in them. This must mean that the variation in the HTML occurred during either the upload or translation to HTML process.

I won't be trying to create horizontal lines again; I will revert to using tildes.

I've used the hr tag for horizontal dividers in nearly all of my stories and never had an issue with it. But I always paste directly into the text submission box (not uploading a file).

I've found it's easier to include than other types of dividers and I can type it more consistently on my phone than trying to use asterisks and centre them etc.
I use this as my horizontal divider. Works every time, though it inserts a line break afterward, so I leave one out from the source:

<center>* * *</center>
