Pure Moonlight (closed)

"We have to tell your family soon." Telma said softly. "It's not fair to them that we're keeping this a secret when my family knows."

She knew that Ruben might be afraid but it was something that they had to do. She couldn't be away from him any longer. The pull was much too strong.

"I'm fairly certain they already know, but they're not aware of any details." He sighed softly. "If you come with me... We'll talk to them. I don't think I can do it alone.",

"We're in this together, right?" Telma told him as she pressed a gentle kiss against his lips. "But later. I want to spend time with you right now. It's been too long since I've had you to myself, Ruben."

"You can have me til dawn," he murmured, nuzzling against her neck and her shoulder where his mark lay hidden by her fur. She had a way of making him become a bit more wolf-like when they were alone. He kissed her cheek, drawing her toward the front door of his little home. It was built for one, cozy, and always had a welcoming feel about it. It was plenty big enough for two, but Ruben intended to expand it eventually.

"I'll keep you until the end of time, if I can." Tilma murmured as he nuzzled against her mark hidden beneath her fur, letting out a soft sigh as he took her hand and led her into his little home.

It was warm and cozy there. She adored the little home that he had built with his father that was surrounded by dense trees and a small patch of heather. It was a good place to start a life together and she dreamed of the day that they could finally live there together as mates instead of hiding from their families.

Ruben quietly settled with his love in the den, drawing her into his lap just to hold her for a while and get the rest of the world off his mind. He was by nature very serious and often too much so for his own good, and it felt nice to let that go while Telma was around. She'd always teased him about being so stubborn and grim.

Telma let him hold her as they settled into his home. He was always so serious about the world and she knew he needed time to let his worries go. She pressed her forehead against his own and let it a long sigh.

"Can you at least promise to smile once for me today?" Telma teased him gently, giving him a smile as she stared into his amber eyes. "You look so handsome when you smile."

Ruben met Thelma's eyes and slowly a small smile lit his face. "With you, how can I resist?" He pressed a long, loving kiss to her lips. Once they parted, he pulled away from her only to lay his head in her lap. It was a bit of a habit of his when they were alone together.

"You'll never resist when it comes to me, Ru." Telma said softly, giving him a smile as he settled on the floor and rested his head against her lap. "Which makes me love you all the more. You let me get away with whatever I want most of the time."

"Most of the time, but not all the time," he reminded her with a small grin. The only time he ever denied her anything was when he had to put his mother or sister's needs first.

After a long stretch of quiet, he murmured, "Telma... do you ever want to have a family?" They'd been together long enough and she was old enough to consider it. He'd known he wanted a family since he was very young, not only for himself, but for his mother who'd never gotten to have the houseful of children she'd once dreamed of. And he'd loved watching Luna grow up so much that he was excited to do the same with his own child.

"Of course I want a family." Telma said softly as she brushed her fingers through his thick black fur. "A whole houseful of little Cubs if we could. I think my Ma and Da would be overjoyed to have grandchildren running around the garden. Is that something you want?"

"I've always wanted a family. But I've been thinking about it a lot more often lately... Maybe I'm afraid something will go wrong, and I'll end up dying without ever having had my own children... A lot of things like that have been on my mind."

"You won't die, Ru. It when we've only just started our lives together." Telma said softly as he told her what had been on his mind. "Your Ma would be upset if she knew that you were having these thoughts. And she's got enough to worry about with Luna being a white wolf."

"That's why I usually keep my worries to myself," he murmured. It was usually a struggle for Selena to get him to share anything negative or things that weighed heavily on his mind. He didn't want to be the source of her stress after she'd spent ten years raising him alone and sometimes going without many things so that he never knew any kind of suffering. He wasn't about to cause her any more pain.

"Well, you can share your worries with me now." Telma said softly as she nuzzled against Ruben's snout, sharing a tender moment with her mate. "That's what mates do. They share triumphs and tragedies, no matter how heavy they might be. Your burden is my burden."

"Hopefully there won't be too many burdens to share," he murmured, picking himself up to kiss her. "I love you, Telma."

.

"If there are, then we'll make it through." Telma promised, giving him a smile as he picked himself up from her lap and kissed her. "Because I love you, Ruben."

Being with him made her heart feel lighter, like she could walk on air. He completed the other part of her and made her inner wolf very happy.

"Now, let's dig into the wine and bread my Ma sent with us." Telma teased him with a smile, pushing herself up out of her seat to walk into his small kitchen.

"Remind me to thank her for all this," Ruben murmured and followed close behind. He opened up the basket and got out the bread and wine, fetching cheese from his tiny cellar where it kept cool and dry. He joined Telma once more in his own small garden out the back of the house. Despite how busy he'd been, he still found time to tend his garden even while living with his parents for safety.

Telma knew that Ruben was staying with his family to calm his mother's fears. She couldn't blame Selena for worrying about her son. She had grown up hearing stories about how she and Kreston were separated for ten years because of fear and it was common knowledge that Selena was fiercely protective of Ruben and Luna. Telma only had to hope that when they told the families about their mating that Selena didn't hate her forever.

"Will your ma like me?" She asked Ruben as they settled in the shade of his plants, a soft blanket she had woven beneath them in the grass. "Well, I know she already likes me, but what if she doesn't like me as your mate?"

"In all honesty, I don't think she likes the idea of anyone as my mate. But I think if she had to give in, she'd want it to be you. She just doesn't want to give me up. Just like your father doesn't want to give you up. The difference is that my mother's a lot harder to convince. I was all she had for ten years after Dad left because he couldn't choose between her and the Golin. And after she lost my little sister too, she didn't let anyone near me til I was nearly ten and we visited Inverness to see family."

"She can't keep you a cub forever. My Da finally realizes that." Telma told him as she broke off a piece of the sweet bread and savored it as he poured the some of the homemade wine. "And I bet that she knows more than you think she does. She just wants to make sure that you have the best life possible. I'm sure things with Luna will be a million times worse, especially after she lost your other sister."

"Things with Luna are going to be... Difficult, the say the least. A Swedish sailor made thief and lumberman is after her heart and I think he's well on his way to getting it. She says he's nothing but trouble and she won't give him the time of day... But the way she looks at him when they pass each other by... It's the same as us, the same as your parents and mine. She loves a criminal, and it's going to kill Ma when she finds out."

"Your Ma and Dad spent so much time making sure that Luna was protected that I'm sure she wants some kind of freedom." Telma said softly as Ruben explained his concern about his little sister. "Being a white wolf must be hard. She is in danger every day."

"I think the constant sheltering bothers her far more than any danger." He sighed, "And the sailor offers her a lot of things no one else would risk. He even asked her to run away to Sweden with him, but of course she had to say no. She couldn't bear to leave the life she built or our family. I think though, just for a moment, she wished she could say yes." He laid down on the blanket after setting his glass of wine aside. "I don't blame her. And I used to want to run away for a big adventure, but she's a much more free spirit than I am. I'm content here. She knows she's missing something."

"What if we had a white cub?" Telma asked him quietly as she settled down on the blanket beside him with a long sigh. "There's a good chance of it. Would you treat them the same way that your parents have for Luna?"
