Lots of turn out, this is good.

Their are enough numbers now to start drawing basic conclusions.

The percent of actively religious subs seems pretty stable in the mid 30's. Doms constantly stay lower then subs. And switches are all over the place, seems you really can't pin them down without the tables turning.

Thank you everyone who has voted.

and I'm always hoping for more.

I put myself down for sub, not actively religious because, well, it's true! I think I went to Sunday school maybe twice as a child. My only memory is of my 4 year old brother asking the teacher who Jesus was. Clearly, our parents had been neglecting our religious education. In the end, they decided they wanted us to decide for ourselves. I decided I needed proof, so religion was never something I could do.

Actively Religious, Among Other Things

I'm glad to see this thread. I am a Dom, an author here, in a poly marriage, a recently new Master.

Yes, all these things together, with the exception of being a Dom, which I think I can easily Scripturally defend to fundies, are cause to keep my private activities to myself and would make me most unwelcome in most Mainline Protestant churches as well as Evangelical and Rick Warren/Community Church Model churches.

This is really unfortunate. I think that BDSM generally and D/s specifically are the best examples of the practice of the love Christ has for His disciples and the love and obedience His disciples are to have for Him. Huh? those of you who grew up in intolerant, strict "sex is sinful" (thank you St. Augustine) churches and agnostics and atheists are saying. Well, those of you who have been "churched" might want to reread the Gospels and catch the dynamic between Christ and His disciples and then read the letters to the Corinthian churches where the Apostle Paul says "Everything is permissible..."

And to the atheists out there, I just want to remind you of the words of GK Chesterton: If there were no God, there'd be no atheists. Wow! (tongue firmly in cheek) it is just exciting to know that I am a part of what made you practicing atheists! I feel like we're brothers and sisters! hehehe!!

But seriously...my Dominance together with my active and deep belief in God does create a paradox for me as well as all Dom Christians: once in Christ, we are "slaves to righteousness." So I am a sub to God.

Jubal or, uh, jubal...?

I'm a submissive catholic female. My owner is not religious at all but he allows me to freely practice my religion. I grew up in a very religious family and although I have taken it down a few notches I still find a lot of comfort and strength in it.

I'm beginning to feeling inclined to say that all 3 groups are equal.

Interesting results

-ponders-

i am sub, and even though i am not affiliated with one certain church; i am actively religious. i believe in HIM, not the individual churchs and what they wish to teach us; from their interpretations.

Religion to me, is a personal spiritual road. Not something lead by others to make their decisions for me.

Yes, i believe in God. Being Cherokee, i also believe in The Greater Spirits. So its kind of a catch 22 situation. So to me, that just means that God (as most call that entity) is at the top rank of The Greater Spirits.

In this context your username seems kind of ironic - "I've never understood how God could expect His creatures to pick the one true religion by faith - it strikes me as a sloppy way to run a universe" is one of many lines by Heinlein's Jubal Harshaw. ;)

Anyway, I'd describe myself as a cynical but open-minded agnostic (and voted as such in the poll). My sub is religious, an evangelical Christian.

I stopped going to church a long time ago. I think it was the thought of burning in the fiery pits of hell for all the things I had done.

Not to mention I had some of the BEST fantasies while in church.

I consider myself a Christian because of my personal relationship with my savior, not because I attend church on Sundays. I do not practice an "organized religion". I've discussed my views on the nature of Creation elsewhere (a very BRIEF intro to my beliefs can be found HERE

Let me know if you consider that "actively religious" or not and I'll answer the poll.

a friend of mine actually brought something to my attention about that... I was raised Nazarene, but I'm more celtic pagan now than anything else, but a friend of mine once asked, why would the ten commandments say "You shall have no other gods before me", if there werent other gods?

I believe that there is a power beyond myself. I choose to see that power as sexless but call her the Great Mother..

Grok in fullness...

First to Evil Geoff & Homburg, thanks, my water brothers. Share water. Never thirst.

Secondly, I think Evil Geoff you have been rather elegant in your presentation of the Faith. I read - then did a copy on - your fuller beliefs. Like Stranger in a Strange Land they require grokking first. :)

Finally, I am ever astounded when I read Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke & Isaac Asimov, the "Holy Trinity" of Humanism. First, in 1959, I find RAH unbelievably prescient in his description of the description of Mike's first introduction to the Fosterite temple. Granted, I am unaware of any MegaChurch (replete as they are with theater seating, cappucino bars, "fitness centers" and climbing walls & grandly expensive multimedia systems with which to attract, NOT the unsaved or damned but the unchurched) with bars or casinos installed before reaching the sanctuary but RAH came DAMN CLOSE in his description of a futuristic Evangelical Protestant megachurch church that are starting to dot the land like pox on the poor!

Though I think RAH firmly waded into/skirted blashemphy in SIASL, yet it is a remarkably elegant, warm, very human description for the essence of faith in Christ. And, I find the same elegance in Clarke & especially Asimov!

Consequently, perhaps these learned men and proselytyzers of Humanism were not necessarily humanists so much as they were idealists - in God Almighty. Heinlein especially poured (heaped, more appropriately) invective on the masses through the emminent "Jubal E. Harshaw, LL.B., M.D., Sc.D., bon vivant, gourmet, sybarite, popular author extraordinary, neopessimist philosopher, devout agnostic, professional clown, amateur subversive, and parasite by choice." (I am unworthy to tie the laces of his shoes!)

Well, for what it's worth - :D "...by the grace of God and an inside straight...," Grok in fullness.

Aquafraternally yours,
Jubal JS Harshaw

:D You know your Heinlein well, Sir. But in the end of SIASL I tend to think that Jubal has a "come to Jesus" moment - or "come to Michael" - in Michael's death & um, grokking. Perhaps that is me soiling RAH's contempt for the Faith. Some Heinlein analysts believe that Jubal E. Harshaw was Heinlein's voice. I dunno. I am satisfied to be ironic, even if I have to do it by a literary trick - something I think fitting RAH/Jubal E. Harshaw.

Share water. Never thirst. (RAH's original thought or a rather stretched paraphrase of Jesus and the woman at the well? Well, who knows! But hey... LOL!)

Aquafraternally yours,
Jubal JS Harshaw

I assume this means you don't go to church every Sunday. If that is so, then that is not active. I know, not the best word choice, but couldn't find a proper synonym.

YC, not to sound bitchy; but how can you or any other person decide if someone is active in their religion and beliefs, just because they don't attend a church?

i am active in my religious beliefs because they are a part of me. My beliefs help make me the person i am. But i don't need to attend a church to know that.

And not to put words in others mouths, but there are others that feel that way too.

The question is not if you are religious, but more if you work for your religion. If you devote a certain amount of time, effort, to go out of your way and do something physical, that is the question.

This poll has nothing to do directly with faith.

Does that clear up a few things?

Very subby, very religious. I'm also very interested to see how this poll develops.

Very much so. :D

YC, we might just be seeing things from different views; but i do devote time, effort and part of myself every day to do for others. Because that is part of my beliefs and values. Even here on the forum.

i don't have to be associated with any one church or assembly to do that.

And the way the poll was worded, it wasn't clear that you didn't mean just faith and beliefs. That might have made a difference in the results of the poll.

Hope you understand where i am coming from on this.:)

Yes, but I can’t seem to find any better wording.

Maybe, “do you do any extra religious activities”, but that doesn’t quite fit either because it doesn’t have to necessarily be extra.

Then ask that - "do you attend services weekly, whatever your belief system is"
I'm religious is a way too subjective notion.

I thought about that, but it excludes others, and is only partially what I am asking.
