Republicans immediately begin playing games with Social Security

Out of curiosity, there was a character in Li'l Abner named Dumpington Von Lump. Is that the source of the new member's name?

Oh my, you're right!

That means our little alt-boy is older than dirt. Probably a gutless Vietnam veteran.

Boxlicker --- Very good, my friend! Yes, Dumpington Van Lump was an Al Capp creation, but I didn't find out about him until sometime in the 1990's, while reading old L'il Abner comics I found in a re-print compilation.

RobDownSouth --- I kind of had you pegged as the kind of "American" who spits on our returning military veterans, so you didn't disappointment me the slightest bit! I'm sorry about the fall of the Soviet Union. I'll bet you really hated that!

I liked the ones set in Lower Slobbovia.

Almost 13 years and still can't quote. Remarkable.

Gotta hand it to Republicans, though. They're better in the trenches than Democrats. Obstructionists are now calling for compromise like that's what they wanted all along so how dare Obama use his presidential powers. Who was the guy who benefitted from Affirmative Action now against it? And it takes some brass to blame a man for something you did.

I did some state level political stuff and it was ugly and not for the faint of heart. And the best and the brightest dont necessarily have the public's best interest in mind, though I suppose that's fairly obvious.

When I was checking out the Texas Republican and Democratic platforms back in 2012, one thing became obvious. The Democratic party had great ideas with shit presentation, and the Republicans had shit ideas with great presentation. It was frankly embarrassing.

Democrat "great ideas" are what are known as pipe dreams. This is why they can never flesh out the ideas in a meaningful way because none of their ideas can withstand actual scrutiny. Just look at the fanciful nonsense being spouted in the communism is better than capitalism thread.

That is why their presentation is shit. It is full of platitudes and rainbows with nothing by way of an actual, actionable plan. Look at the nonsense spouted by Johnny Savage's rep on the vote against the pipeline about "investing in long term growth" instead... As if it is an either/or instead of all of the above. The pipeline doesn't take government money to build. A bridge is not a long term employment solution either, but they will happily fund that. Almost a trillion in stimulus money and 6 years to get "shovel read" projects actually ready and the only meaningful growth is in the energy sector and the administration hindered, not helped that.

Just because (allegedly) your heart is "in the right place" does not mean the utopia you have a vision for is remotely possible.

The biggest problem is they never take into account the very real changes in human behavior when the enact some well-intentioned policy. Just because a consequence is unintended does not mean it should be so unanticipated.

Tell us again why grandma should eat cat food in teh name of freedom #SchmottGuy

p.s. your bro AJ is getting beat up pretty thoroughly in the Muslim thread on the GB. Don't you have "bro cavalry" duty this morning?

The trouble with Liberals is, they govern from a standpoint of how the world should be instead of how it really is. They are guided by an ideology rife with fanciful idealism.

If they would just admit that to themselves and quit pretending their ideas have any economic merit, I might support a limited idea or two.

Just come out and say it. "Look, I know this new program is going to cost an arm and a leg, and will encourage some to take advantage, but I really feel that it is something we should do anyway, despite the economic consequences.

They insist on calling expenditures "investments" and talk of "growing an economy" while removing available capital. It is hard to tell if it is a problem with innumeracy, or whether it is simple sophistry.

I think it is a little of both. They must know that the rhetoric is overly optimistic about economic benefits and that it is important to obscure the costs of programs, but I do think the bulk of them are incapable of getting their head around the scale of the problem.

Some things really make you wonder. The administration was told flat out that the Solyndra project would fail. You can already buy ready-made solar panels from China far cheaper than Solyndra could ever manufacture them, yet they "invested" a half billion dollars. Did the think the grand symbol of made-in-the-USA panels was worth that much just for the symbolism? Did the not know that you cannot make it up on volume if you lose money on every single sale?

I see queerbait is whining "but...but...Solyandra!" again.

He needs to update his talking points

(just kidding, folks, we all know queerbait NEVAR updates his talking points....he's still doin' "but....but....Fannie and Freddie!" long after that talking point was discredited. When you're a #SchmottGuy, facts are unnecessary....all that matters is #TehNarrative)

So your vote is sophistry then. That is not an unreasonable point of view. See also Gruber. The big lie is defensible if the motive is pure.

But who is to determine whether or not the motive is pure? Supporters of Hitler thought his motives were pure - subjugation of Europe and elimination of sub-humans. Jihadists think their motives are pure - the establishment of a world-wide caliphate and death to infidels. You know what they say about the paving materials on the road to Hell.

What issue can liberals not thoroughly explain?

Like how the looming black hole that is the unfunded liabilities of public sector pensions, so called entitlements like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SS Disability, Prescription drugs (thanks liberal GWBush!), the VA does anything but grow, given that under Republican and Democratic administrations alike the national debt has never declined a dollar.

How it is that that never has a day of reckoning?
