I find PMing someone new difficult at times. Not really knowing what to say, and it seems that a lot of pressure is put on to make the first PM perfect, or you won't get a response back... not to mention the fear of it showing up on the PM asshatery thread.
With that said, there is one person that I do PM regularly.. and what a joy it is to PM that one person.

That is a shame. I've been put off sending PMs for those reasons. Even though I know that I'm only seeking a friendly exchange, I feel under pressure to demonstrate that there's nothing sinister, synthetic or needy about my approach, for fear of it ending up in the ridicule repository.
I created the "I was happy to answer your PM because..." thread in the hope that some accounts of positive experiences would offset some of the prevailing negativity. Encouragingly, it didn't suffer an immediate death.
Incidentally, I find that I often get good outcomes from spontaneous PMs that I send in response to a glimpse of chemistry in a thread. They're usually short, light-hearted and not at all thought through, but I do send them quickly while the opportunity is open. If I don't get any answer, then I assume that I misread the connection and just move on. I've not been bitten by any of those (unless I'm being unknowlingly blocked or ignored by people for being too random).

It snowed again and stayed overnight! Melting a little, will freeze, make the roads icy, cause a ton of accidents, back up the service centers as everyone rushes to get snow tires on, but...
