Right Place, Right Time, Wrong Victim

Interestingly enough, had he not been armed, I could have been arrested for hitting him, for the same reasons why a licensed boxer would be arrested.

"My whole body is a lethal weapon." :p

Well done. I hope a lawyer doesn't get hold of him with an eye toward suing you for assault.

Florida has a 'right to defend yourself law' and a 'no retreat law.' That is, if you threaten me I dont have to flee from you before I can defend myself. But the state is still prosecuting people who defend themselves from robbery and rape.

Lawyers are some of the dummest bastards God ever made. Judges are worse. And most jurors are stupid mother-fuckers when it comes to the law. Lotsa stuff thats legal gets prosecuted and tried and convicted.

And the appeals court tosses the convictions out, because it was legal.

We had a local case a while back where a dum fuck deputy arrested a man for possession of clove cigarettes. Clove cigarettes are legally made, sold, and taxed by the state. But the dumshit deputy thought possession was unlawful. And the state attorney charged the man with possession. And the dipshit jurors convicted him. The Supreme Court tossed the conviction out because possession is legal. The man bought them at the tobacco store in the mall.

Stupid damned people!

So glad you're safe, love. :rose: (adding to the gray hairs)

I had a kid working for me a few years ago who had a guy pull a knife on him while he was waiting in a parking lot. He was supposed to meet his brother there and they were going out to some clubs. He said the guy just said "Hey man." He turned around and the guy was walking toward him with the knife.

He just hauled back and hit the guy. My kid didn't make out as well as you did. He has a long scar across his abdomen where the guy sliced at him before he got a second punch in, this time putting his attacker down.

He called the cops on his cell while he was driving himself to the hospital. Of course, the creep was long gone by the time the cops made it to the parking lot.

I always knew your were the romantic hero type. I could tell from the av. Way to go! There are too many people out there that take advantage of those who are less than what they are. It's nice for the good guy to win one and very romantic that you thought of your girlfriend first.

By the way, do you know why God invented chest hair?

Traction!

good moves, etc.!

BUT what do you advise the rest of us untrained pussies to do, in this situation?

:)

Well, I wouldn't say 'pussies,' for one thing. No shame in hightailing it away from an attacker. But I agree with most of what JBJ said. Be prepared, but if you have the chance, run like hell and start shouting for help.

Good fer you , Slyc. I almost feel sorry for the guy. Or not.

:D

Or like me, too dense to realize you might actually be in trouble, until five minutes later.

"Give me your money", the mugger said. "Uh...no?" I said and walked on. Guy was too stunned to react untill I was too far away and too much in sight of other people to do anything. Then, after a few minutes, just as I was about to board the subway home, my pulse started racing and I had the sudden urge to run somewhere.

Looking back, it might not have been the most prudent of moves.

LOL. When I lived in New York, one of my room mates came home from a party, so drunk his breath would have made a Doberman pass out. He had this dazed look on his face and managed to get out that he thought someone tried to mug him.

We asked him what happened, and he said, "I was heading through the Park and this guy tells me to give him my money. I think he had a knife. I told him to fuck off and kept walking. Holy, shit, he could'a stabbed me in the back or something!"

Still, the best defense against lawsuits, such as the one this guy could conceivably bring for damages, is to have done the right thing. Slyc did not, as some young hotheads do, allow his training to make him think he was badass. He didn't gratuitously carry on injuring the dude once he was reliably subdued, or anything. He didn't even crow over him. A lot of cops have handled the same situation a lot worse.

If this had happened right after I got out of the service, I probably would have ground him into the pavement. Thank God for a little experience and maturity.

The really weird thing is, I was thinking about that film earlier for no apparent reason.

I was talking to some of my coworkers about the incident today at work, and someone mentioned the scene in Con Air in which Cage kills the guy who had been hitting on his wife. He pointed out the following:

1) I didn't kill the mugger
2) He was armed, I was not
3) Alcohol was not a factor (at least in my case)

I don't think I'll be hearing any more about this. I gave a full statement to the police at the scene, and I checked out clean.

Hey! Wow! Good on ya, Slyc! I'm impressed.

That thing about martial arts people being automatically at fault if they defend themselves against an attacker might hold in some states, but not here. Some asshole came into a Gate (filling station) that I used to go to all the time when I lived near it, and tried to hold it up. There just happened to be a martial arts instructor in the station, who disarmed him.

Theoretically I know what to do in a situation like that, but I hope to God it doesn't happen to me.

If I'm ever up against a knife, I just hope I have a weapon of some kind (even if just my jacket) so that I don't get cut. I really hate the idea of being stabbed/slashed with a knife...

All true :)

Just glad you're ok hun.

Glad things turned out well, slyc. I hope you had some way of dealing with the adrenaline crash that followed. :D

As a CID investigator in the Army, I faced people with knives, guns, tire irons, wrenches . . . not bragging, just saying. After the first couple of times, you learn how to be calm in a situation like that. Even if, inside, I was going, "Oh, shit."

Having almost the same experience in the military (Air Force - Law Enforcement Specialist) I faced similar things. The best protection I ever had though while in the service was a partner who was a dog handler.

I don't care if the guy had a bazooka...they usually dropped whatever weapon they had and ran, which only caused them to be tired when the dog caught them and brought them down.

So that's why whenever I walk anywhere, the big black rotty comes with me. People give me a wide berth when we come walking down the street. :D
