Sarah Palin

Has Biden left the Beltway yet or made a remotely newsworthy comment?

Just a point of order (not waving a Biden flag), but you seem to not have been paying attention. Biden commutes to Washington from Delaware on Amtrak--nearly every day.

Stereotyping is so much more convenient though, isn't it?

And speaking of that, this thinking everyone inside the Beltway is a numbskull is a bunch of stereotyping crap too. The only way you get anything done through the government is to legislate it and then to execute it. That's what people inside the Beltway are doing (and they are doing it with a lot of armchair drones yapping at them from their Laz-Y-boys)--and if you don't think anything is getting done, go out to your front door and see if the road is still paved, the trash has been picked up recently, a school bus goes by to a school that is opening and functioning, no one is being mugged in your front yard, the traffic lights are working, or there are foreign troops rolling down your street.

I agree, her first line comes across that way...

...and yet, how much AH political behavior in the last few weeks is easily explained away by the next two?

An awful lot, I fear. Far too much. *sigh*

(not talking about you, dearheart... this is a more general comment)

'May he who is without sin cast the first stone.'

I think being governor of a state running a surplus instead of a deficit would be a disadvantage. It's like being a boxer who never had to step into the ring.

I was struck while looking around at information that the population of San Diego is about 30K more than Alaska... and the monetary budget is only about a quarter of Alaska's...

I am sure that are many challenges that are unique to the two areas. They are not a wash.

But my raw thought was that it meant Mayor Jerry Sanders is more qualified as a fiscal conservative than Sarah Palin. He has had to do as much or more with only one fourth of her budget.

BTW, I am not endorsing Sanders for anything. It is a somewhat disconnected and free-form thought that was not vetted in any way.

Do you have any idea how patronizing you come across?

Just checking...

Sorry.

It's a real sore spot with me.

We only get two political parties. I feel like both are total crap. I rarely even vote. I don't even see the point.

If a party makes a bad call, and there is no defending it, every member of that party will respond the same when you try to get them to admit it. "Look at them. Don't look at us. Look at those people."

You can't get either party to admit anything is wrong with their party. I think that is what allows them to be a sucky as they want to be. Nobody is going to call them on it.

Meanwhile, I'm home the second tuesday of November looking at the citizenship requirements of New Zealand.

I'm sorry, but did you see me exempting myself from that in any way, shape or form?

Nope, you just exempted me. :D Not that I deserved it.

And I imagine elf was talking to the person who made the statement to begin with as well?

I hear ya. There was plenty of truth in what you said. I just don't appreciate a lecture. Sore spot with me. ;)

sr, I'm not having a go at you. I would point out that the guys that get the trash cleared, the road paved, the precinct policed etc - are the executive aka the mayor, the governor the pres and so on. The'legislators (of both parties) have no concept of managerial functions which is why ex-Governors have made the most dynamic Presidents.

My complaint against Biden is not that he is a commuter - just that he has been a bureaucratic non-entity for 35 years - like a bunch of GOP senators. These guys couldn't negotiate a fishing treaty with Russia unless it involved two millenia of senate hearings on the definition of the word 'fish'.

Biden is a neanderthal bureaucrat. Palin is an uncontrolled exocet missile.

Well, a bit, so unlike you.

Like her or loathe her, Palin has electrified the campaign. The old sterile arguments of pants-suit Hillary against 'is he black' Obama have been blown out of the water by 'hockey-mom'.

She may be all the things the NY lib press is trying to paint her, but after the seedy tenure of Clinton and Bush, doesn't she really appeal to the inner core of American honesty and 'a plague on both your houses'? Or is that just chromosomes talking?

Well I don't appreciate being told you don't appreciate what I say about what I don't apprecieate.

Yeah, untie that knot.;)

Being a dynamic president is not always a good thing. Look to GW Bush for proof of that.

So, you're saying that if a person has too much experience, they're not qualified? But if they have a little bit of experience in a cake job, they are qualified? But if they have, oh, say a medium level of experience in government, and also experience in community organizing (the flip side of government) they're not qualified? I don't think you can have it all three ways without looking a little foolish.

Biden is a neanderthal bureaucrat. Palin is an uncontrolled exocet missile.

Again, I direct you to my first response in this post.

On the issue of the 'liberal press' painting Palin this way or that, if you want any credibility around here, you're going to have to forget about your Fox News talking points and get to the issues, my friend. The press has a job to do, the liberal bloggers have their venom to spew. They are not one and the same.

It's your chromosomes. I find it rather insulting personally that the GOP thinks that one vagina is exactly like all the others, but if you're okay with that, more power to ya.

Go ahead and vote for McCain/Palin based on those chromosomes if you like, but at least know what else you'll be voting for:
  • the overturning of Roe v. Wade
  • the teaching of creationism in schools as a science
  • abstinence-only sex education (which has worked real well for her family  )
  • book banning (if Palin decides there are "objectionable" words in it)
  • the war in Iraq to continue indefinitely (Palin has called it "a task from God." I can show sources)

You can probably kiss Literotica good-bye, as well, since this site isn't "family friendly."

She doesn't appeal to me regardless of her honesty.

I do want to find out how much fire there is beneath the smoke... but some of the things I'm hearing actually scare me. For example, there is the matter of this bit with the library and librarian in her small town.

It make me fear that smoke is from burning books.

The proof of which is that yours is post No. 435 in this thread, which is one of several threads about Palin. The whole phenomenon is extraordinary.

Oh, it's got everybody talking all right. And yeah, that was the intent.

And it has a lot of people saying a lot of things in the heat of the moment.

The wonderful Jon Stewart, everyone... not using anyone's words except their own. Amazing. Don't these people have any clue that all these things are on the record somewhere?

Thanks B. You made my day. That clip should be required viewing for anyone contributing to these threads.

I'm still looking forward to seeing Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin. :)

yahoo news

Poll: 51 percent say reporters are trying to hurt Palin

Over half of U.S. voters (51%) think reporters are trying to hurt Sarah Palin with their news coverage, and 24% say those stories make them more likely to vote for Republican presidential candidate John McCain in November.

Thirty-nine percent (39%) also believe the GOP vice presidential nominee has better experience to be president of the United States than Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

But 49% give Obama the edge on experience, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey taken before Palin's historic speech Wednesday night to the Republican National Convention.

While Republicans and Democrats predictably favor their party's candidate by overwhelming margins, the experience gap among voters unaffiliated with either party is even narrower than the national totals. Forty-two percent (42%) say Obama has better experience to be president, but 37% say Palin does.

Just a week ago 67% of voters told Rasmussen Reports they didn't know enough about Palin, only the second woman ever to be on a national political ticket, to comment on her. Heading into last night's speech, however, 52% had a favorable opinion of Alaska's Governor.

In the new survey, while 24% are more likely to vote for Palin due to recent news coverage, 19% say the opposite and 54% say the stories have no impact on their votes.

. . . Eighty percent (80%) of Republicans say reporters are trying to hurt the GOP vice presidential nominee, and 28% of Democrats agree. Only six percent (6%) of Republicans and even fewer Democrats (4%)think the reporting is intended to help her. Most Democrats (57%) think the reporters are being unbiased, but just nine percent (9%) of Republicans concur.

Among unaffiliated voters, 49% say reporters are trying to hurt Palin, while 32% say their coverage is unbiased. Only five percent (5%) say reporters are trying to help her.

Voters are more ambivalent about whether the media coverage of Palin and her family reflects a double standard that treats women worse than men. Forty-six percent (46%) say it does, but 35% disagree. Most Republicans and unaffiliated voters say the stories show the media's double standard against women, but a majority of Democrats disagree.

The findings, nevertheless, are troublesome for the embattled news industry and parallel what voters said in surveys earlier this summer. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of voters now believe most reporters try to help the candidate they want to win, and 49% believe reporters are trying to help Obama this year. Only 14% think they are trying to help McCain. In another survey, 55% said media bias is a bigger problem for the electoral process than large campaign donations.

Although women voters by a 48% to 35% margin believe the coverage of Palin reveals a double standard in the media, they continue to support Obama more than men. Palin in her comments already has made clear that one of her key missions is to lure women voters disaffected by Clinton's defeat in the Democratic primaries to the McCain column. This national survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports on September 3, 2008 (before Palin's convention speech). The margin of sampling error for each survey is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

In her speech, Palin said, "I signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids' public education even better."

Facts: Her focus on public education in Wasilla really paid off when she was mayor: during her tenure researchers at Johns Hopkins deemed Wasilla High School "a dropout factory." Apparently 60% or fewer freshman who start off at Wasilla High go on to graduate.

******
Palin: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

Facts: In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."

******
Former Aarkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

Facts: Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

******
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney: "We need change, all right — change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington — throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin."

Facts: Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.

******
Palin: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

Facts: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. On the other hand, McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

******

Palin tried to use taxpayers' millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn't spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation.

She is being praised by McCain's campaign as a tax cutter, despite the fact that Alaska has no state income or sales tax.

Palin wants to eliminate reproductive choice in this country, yet says that "Bristol made the decision on her own to keep the baby," implying that Bristol had a choice about whether or not to continue her pregnancy. She wouldn't under the proposed administration of her mother and John McCain, both of whom oppose abortion rights and say that they would work to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The fact that anyone of at least average intelligence supports these folks is just astounding.
