Sarah Palin

Since the direct election of Senators began after 1913 only Senators Harding, Kennedy and Nixon have gotten elected in their own right. Truman and Johnson got there the old fashioned way, "royal succession," and were reelected running as incumbents. It's unlikely either would have gotten there in their own right.

Before 1913 the way one became senator was mostly by being a fixture of the political establishment in a state. I don't know how relevent that history is. OTOH, the number of governors who became prez from is very relevent.

I read those snopes things, and im particularly shocked that people would possibly believe that obama is the antichrist based on that email.

That email says that Revelation says that the antichrist will be of muslim descent. That makes me chuckle, because when revelation was written around 90 A.D. there wouldnt be muslims for some 5 and a half centuries.

But it's on the internet! It must be true!!

One more time, she didn't knock-off a sitting, establishment-governor in a primary by being just a pretty face and a good teleprompter reader.

But if y'all wanna underestimate her, be my guest.

Prediction (Stella noted I've been doing a lot of fortune telling recently): She will eat Biden's lunch in a debate.

(Confidence: 60 percent? Above 50/50.)

PS. Biden's had a free ride electorally for 36 years. He's never gotten far enough in his prez candidates to get a real workout. He might possibly be flabby. Apollo Creed.

I've been saying he needs to take her seriously and do his homework (or he's gonna get barracudaed).

Times have changed, but some people will always see a double standard by one group and never their own.

kettle, meet pot.

BTW, this comment has nothing to do with the marijuana discussion.

That's why I don't touch the stuff any more. Except I don't get paranoid.

But I get so relaxed that if you tossed a live hand grenade in my lap my only reaction would be "Oh wow!" and a giggle.

now, of course, not that I would EVER touch marijuana  because its illegal and all that, and you all know i would never break the law :) But i HEAR that getting baked is awesome.

not that i ever would or anything

;)

Bel - I think the "didn't inhale" is what made them irate. I have a pretty convincing argument for that: Smart GOPers understand that they live a glass house, because many or most of their future candidates will have smoked pot. Sure, there's always some yahoos who jump on every possible flaw - it's the equivalent of posters here focusing on an antagonist's typos or spelling errors. It's noise, not taken seriously by the body politic.

As for not sponsoring legislation: J'accuse! J'accuse both political parties and the entire baby boom generation for rank cowardice and dereliction of duty on this issue! Shame, Shame, SHAME! This insane war on drugs is a cancer that is eating away our society, constitution, foreign policy, everything. Both the political establishment and the polity they represent are guilty of perpetuating it and allowing its perpetuation. STOP IT NOW!

</rant>

We both know by now that our positions about the so-called "War on Drugs" are basically similar.

I absolutely agree that the "I didn't inhale" bit only aggravated the situation. Like 'em, love 'em or hate' em, ol' Bill has a talent for that. He never has learned that sometimes the proper answer is to quit squirming and tell someone that something is none of their fucking business.

Um, I seriously do not believe that, morning runs aside, Sarah Palin is Rocky Balboa.

Oh, BTW... Rocky LOST that first fight.

Why is any of this relevant to the current election? Both presidential candidates are U.S. senators.

I agree. If being governor is an indication of being better qualified to be president, we should consider Gov GW Bush and how he fared in the Whitehouse. In that light, I suggest we never, ever, ever let another governor become president.

This is my fault. I was trying to get one of them to just admit that Palin is unqualified. Of course, it ended in the elabrate evasion of the topic at hand.

And, NO, it would not have been easier to get any intellectual honesty from a Democrat, either. That's no excuse.

I really, really want you guys to understand this:

Attacking Democrats in no way justifies retarded Republican decisions.

I just didn't see the relevance of the statistics given. I do, in fact, think that several years experience as a governor (of someplace more populated and complex than Alaska, though) is much more appropriate to the presidency than tenure as a U.S. senator--unless that tenure has been really, really long and (as in LBJ's case) given the senator the needed experience and influence to actually get legislation passed. That being the case, I'd probably look to someone who was a governor for at least four years and then a senator for a good chunk of time.

And both therefore have no experience of executive office. BO's ethereal rhetoric leaves one seriously underwhelmed and the geriatric JMcC seems to want to live in Nam in retrospace.

The only way of separating these two slippery non-doers is by looking at their Veeps. So far the lipsticked pitbull has wiped the floor with the media and the Dems, thrown her whole life - warts and all - in the public domain and got a grovelling apology fromthe Alaska Independence Party chairwoman.

Has Biden left the Beltway yet or made a remotely newsworthy comment?

The stringers are going to decide this contest, surely?

Some of that is my fault. When DP posted that we had only elected two "sitting"senators, I wanted to clarify that our Presidents have come from various sources, with various results. As I think I posted earlier, one cannot predict the efficacy of a President by whether he/she was a Governor, Senator, Congressperson, or none of the above.

Do you have any idea how patronizing you come across?

Just checking...

I think being governor of a state running a surplus instead of a deficit would be a disadvantage. It's like being a boxer who never had to step into the ring.

If you use GW Bush as the example, I think all the current candidates are over-qualified. However, if you consider such things as intellect and the ability to reason without being blinded by faith-based ideology, I think some candidates are more qualified than others.

I agree, her first line comes across that way...

...and yet, how much AH political behavior in the last few weeks is easily explained away by the next two?

An awful lot, I fear. Far too much. *sigh*

(not talking about you, dearheart... this is a more general comment)
