Sarah Palin

Sirimavo Bandaranaike
Margaret Thatcher
Indira Gandhi
Angela Merkel
Helen Clark
Benazir Bhutto.

Right wing left wing, competent incompetent, honest and corrupt, but each and every one talented and on their own account women of substance. All got to the top on their own merits.

There are plenty of American women Republican women of equal talent who could do the same but were not given the opportunity because McCain was too scared, yes the great hero scared, to make a good choice.

Sarah Palin is most eloquent in what she says about John McCain's inadequacies about his fear of having a genuinly competent woman, an equal running with him.

Palin isn't up to the job simply because the man who picked her isn't either. Sarah Palin is not merely inadequate she is a ringing statement of John Mc Cain's inadequacy for the job.

Do you honestly think Bhutto and Gandhi succeeded solely on their own merits? Both of them became prominent because of what their fathers had done. Whatever they did after taking power, they only got there through male intervention.

BTW, Why did you omit Golda Meier?

Sirimavo Bandaranaike also came in on the coattails of her assassinated PM husband.

And I agree that Golda Meier is a major omission.

Box, Few politicians succeed on their own merits male or female. Thatcher is an exception. Examples are Churchill's father Randolph, FDR's cousin Theodore, Bush the lesser and Bush the least, Pitts 1 & 2 etc etc.

Indira Gandhi was independently prominent in the India independence movement from 1941, well before her father became PM. She won 3 elections on her own over 20 years and you don't do that without ability.

Bhutto's father was hanged, her brother murdered, she was detained illegally and eventually murdered herself. If you think she only got there because of the advantages she had: well!!.

My opinion is that she and her husband, the current president of Pakistan were corrupt to the core BUT my point in the previous post was that she was a woman of great ability and substance, corrupt or not.

The other basic point in my previous post is that McCain by picking Palin and bypassing many far superior Republican women showed his own weakness and unfitness for office. :)

Why did I leave Golda Meier out , because I forgot her, but thanks for the reminder. I also left out one or two others like Mary Robinson (because the Irish president has no executive power) and a Scandinavian whose name I forgot .

These women (and Bandaranaike) got there because of the families they were in. there's no mystery or question about this. They were smart, yes, and they were raised to rule. They were in no way self-made leaders (in contrast to Thatcher and Meier).

Whatever Palin is, she's self-made, of course.

Love that show. She's not stupid, but she's not showing herself to be a quick study and fast on her feet at this point. I'm sure the glare of the national spotlight is blinding, but still.

Hey, I got one! How 'bout a woman with no rich family, no Ivy League pedigree, no particular social advantages or connections, who all on her own successfully challenges a corrupt, inbred, self-serving and self-perpetuating political establishment, knocks off an incumbent governor in a primary, beats a former governor in a general, and goes on to accomplish some pretty signifigant things in her first two years in office, racking up an 80 percent approval rating in the process?

(Oh never mind - she has incorrect opinions about abortion and some other social issues, so all that is disqualified.)

Gandhi? Bandaranaike? Bhutto? Why is it that the women leaders that feminists seem to admire are always nepotistic tyrants? There is a reason that all 3 were voted out of office- because they abused their powers to cover their asses.

Don't forget, in Gandhi's case, she resorted to illegal tactics because she was convicted of campaign violations related to the 1971 election in her own district. And the man who defeated her, Raj Narain, was the same man who pressed charges which led to her conviction. That's the sort of woman you admire?

Sheesh.

Now, for the other examples that some feminists use: Cleopatra was a complete failure, who overtaxed her people and made a grain shortage bad enough due to her inexperience in power that she was deposed by the people of her capital. When she returned, it was as Caesar's puppet (and don't delude yourself that Caesar couldn't have picked Arsinoe instead of her if it had suited his interests better).

After Caesar died, she thought that the tail could wag the dog, and so she tried to control Rome through Antony. Except Rome wasn't a dog at that point, it was a wolf, and she got herself eaten, thanks to the ruthless prodigy named Octavian.

Catherine the Great- a foreign usurper whose military successes were due to lucky choices in favorites and generals. She made a few limited reforms, but largely made things a lot worse for the peasants. So much so that they revolted against her under Pugachev.

Hatshepsut, on the other hand, made Egypt rich and powerful (and got herself erased from the records for her pains). But at least she did a good job. As did Elizabeth I, with a few exceptions.

Fair dues for what she accomplished in Alaska and for her ratings. And for being there at the right time with the right message for Alaskans.

ETA: Didn't that slut Cleopatra die in a horse riding accident? *rimshot* Thanks, I'll be in the Tiki Lounge all week. Don't forget to tip your servers.

Thatcher was brilliant, actually, like her policies or not. I like the British system of having the Prime Minister having to answer to parliment
and defend policy/decisions in a Q&A in session. She could rip them a new one with wit. Bush, in the same circumstances, would look like Palin being interviewed by Couric.

Ummm. OK. What does this have to do with Sarah Palin? (I've always thought Eleanor Roosevelt was pretty nifty.)

We're now talking about Sarah Palin as a new sort of feminist leader... apparently. Which she isn't.

Appears to me that we can stop talking about her at all--at least for a while. She seems to be unraveling already.

Lit does something funny to the URL. Can't figure out what.

I think it censors the term '**********'.

ETA: Yes it does.

That's right, weren't you paying attention? All this woman's stunningly impressive accompishments that I cited are disqualified because she has incorrect opinions about abortion and some other social issues. Sheesh.

I certainly wasn't paying all that much attention to you. :)

So it's my fault a thread that was pretty straightforward at one point flipped off into your world, I guess.

Wow.

That's especially snarky coming from you, Rox. Especially the second time. ;)

But don't you worry. Palin's stance on abortion is just one of many issues that concern a great many U. S. voters.

I don't want to wish my life away, but I can't wait until Thursday.

I just found out daughter's band rehearsal has been moved to a different night.

I don't have to record it, I can watch it live.

I'm making popcorn.

:D

showing him up and castrating him, which at times she seems to be in danger of doing?

Oh, Doc, I didn't expect YOU to talk about castrating females. Geeze, Louise. A man's masculinity is a part of him and has nothing to do with what a woman does or doesn't do. If a man feels "castrated," it's his feelings of insecurity coming to the surface, nothing more. Should women behave in such a way that the men around them never have to face their insecurities?

Should birds stop flying because it makes humans sad that we can't?

Expectations are now so low for Palin that if she merely remembers her own name she will be declared the winner by much of the US.

God, I can see it now -- I'm a woman, I'm a mother, I'm anti-choice, I'm anti gay, I'm a Con, I'm a hunter, I'm a Governor--all repeated in in different forms over and over.
