I saw Avatar last night. I really enjoyed the movie. The special effects were amazing. They have gotten to the point where it looks so real. It is definitely the same theme as Dancing with Wolves but with a twist. If you like movies like that you go see it. It is 3 hours long though so make sure you get a large popcorn and drink. Oh yeah, the female avatars were kind of hot. :D

Did you see it in 3D? I'm going next week but there are only three show times that are in 3D.

Yes I saw it in 3D. I had heard that you really need to see it in 3D since it is suppose to look a little cartoony in 2D. I may go see it again in IMAX. It is definitely a politically correct, green themed movie. I just enjoyed it for the special effects and story.

Saw it in 3D twice.
Can't imagine what it would have been not seeing it in 3D.
I wish I had done iMax 3D.
Really a visually amazing movie!

Saw it in 3D on Christmas Eve ... a beautiful, georgeous, film. Hub was totally turned on by the characters ... he wishes I had a tail and was as tall; I wish he had one of his own and was taller :) Though I thought the story and characters were entirely predictable, we were well satisfied with this subtly erotic, extraordinarily visual, movie. A real art piece ... modern erotica.

I certainly thought the native women were very attractive. Great bodies even if they were 9 feet tall. Would certainly love to meet a human size version out in the woods somewhere. :D

It was a predictable movie but still enjoyed it and hope to see it imax this week.

Yes Neytiri was quite cute.
She kinda reminded me of what Shelley Duvall would look like if she were in anyway cute.
The big eyes, the thin face, the smile.

I'm dying to go see it and I'll see it in 3D at the IMAX...is it ok for kids?
There were alot of kids in the theatre that I was in.
I think it is fine for them. Not alot of profanity. The nudity is of the alien species and just the way they live, and the violence is not bloody or graphic.

I also saw Avatar in 3D and IMAX....not only was the visual effects stunning the story was relative to the world. The story of white man coming and taking over witht he Indians and greedy corporate american, its all there in front of you in Avatar. Absolutely superb movie

Perfectly correct; the beauty of the movie, how it enraptures visually, conveys the intensity of this eternal theme. Great art makes us think and sometimes thinking leads us to make different choices.

well i guess i have to be the party pooper.

it was pretty i guess, but the plot was unoriginal and the dialogue was especially bad. the braveheart speech at the end was the worst. it may as well have been bill pullman telling randy quaid that it is the earth's independence day.

in terms of the cgi, i thought it was done well, but i still thought there was some uncanny valley with the na'vi. the scenery was nice and i guess visually it was cool, but not enough to compensate for the lame story and characters.

lastly, as with any kind of movie like this, the trope of natives as being "in touch with nature" is what edward said would call orientalism. that is, projecting dominant cultures fantasies about the exotic other. why are natives always primitive? why do they always rely on voodoo and magic? why are they always, and i mean ALWAYS sexualized? because that's how the west romantically views the colonization of other cultures, as bring culture and science and reason to the savages. the west = intelligence, technology, and reason = the rational or modernity, while the colonized = closer to nature, infantile, believe in the supernatural = irrational or premodern.

now this is where many of you will say "but the colonists were evil and the natives were good and that is the point of the movie". and i will respond, no, the point of the movie is to watch shit blow up. but seriously, if you think that the writers of the movie want to give up their modern lifestyle that increasingly separates us from each other and the natural world in order to spend more time in nature and communing with our fellow humanity...well, come one now. also, if you notice, violence is always the answer in these movies. not that civilized if you think about it.

when i first saw the previews, all signs pointed to suck. but then the reviews were all glowing and using words like revolutionary. so i was pretty disappointed to watch a barely decent action movie with a hamfisted plot that had lots of neat drawings in it. on the plus side, shit did blow up, so at least that was good to watch.

i'm pretty sure i'm not going to change anyone's mind, so before you try to start an argument or want to dissect my points one my one with your own rationalizations or logic systems, let's just agree to disagree.

p.s. for a good (and even if you disagree, it's at least interesting) breakdown of what i'm talking about: http://io9.com/5422666/when-will-white-people-stop-making-movies-like-avatar

i just got home from seeing it in imax 3d. it was such a cool movie to watch. much of it was predictable but who gives a shit. the effects were awesome to watch the surround sound was superb. it was an all around good time. im pretty sure ill be doing it in imax 3d once more before the next imax movie comes out. the 18.50 a ticket wasnt ideal but i feel i pretty much got my moneys worth. ive spent more on a 3 minute lap dance and didnt leave as satisfied :p hahaha

I agree with some of what PHD said. It was a heavy handed message and not one I totally agree with but I still found the visuals stunning and I enjoyed the action and imagination that went into the movie. Yeah the plot was predictable and it was a tad long but still worth seeing in my opinion.

I do agree the theme can be debated. Not all natives are peaceful and one with nature and not all corporations are evil. There are different sides to both but I don't go to the movies for the message, just to be told a story and be entertained.

I don't know about anybody else but I much prefer the comfort of my heated/cooled home. I don't really want to live in the woods fighting off mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and whatever else. Don't think I want to trade off for that lifestyle and I doubt anybody else here does either. You would have to give up Lit at the least. lol.
