Agreed. In 29 states it is definitely more dangerous than it was a few years ago to be pregnant and our national maternal mortality rate was already eclipsed by many other developed countries at that time.

The impact of these anti abortion laws have made miscarriages, complicated pregnancies and fetal abnormalities incompatible with life career damaging/risking imprisonment for physicians and nurses. Not surprisingly they are leaving those states and leaving their professions in droves making the issue of maternal care deserts a rapidly growing phenomenon.

It's tragic and heartbreaking.

I think it's a little bit of the dog that caught the car.

All of this was completely predictable, but people who have focused their political action around banning abortions because it's "murder" didn't have (and may still not have) any sophisticated understanding about how complicated reproductive health care is, how often pregnancies miscarry and how quickly a wanted pregnancy can go wrong and require urgent medical attention.

The anti abortion movement is so much more about controlling women and their choices than it is about reducing abortions. It's not hard to prove that outlawing abortions doesn't stop abortions... it just makes them so much more dangerous.
