Your position has an internal logic failure.

The US was populated with people who had access to guns. At the time of the colonies those guns were the same guns as used by the military. ie; weapons of war.

The tradition of gun ownership, and the constitutional protections for such, has continued throughout the existence of the United States of America. From birth, through civil war, westward expansion, 2 world wars, and eventually full incorporation of all 50 states into the union, gun ownership has always been part of our lifestyle.

And yet only 4 Presidents have been assassinated along with 2 unsuccessful attempts in a nation of 350 million souls and the number of guns north of 500 million.

That isn't the result of "too many" guns in the hands of the general population, but rather a recognition of the violently mentally unstable who live unchecked/unrestrained in society and the inability of law enforcement to prevent these people from acting out against innocents.

Thus your argument of; "it's all the guns in America that are the problem!!" fails. Our guns aren't the problem any more than Harold Shipman was the reason for mass murder in your country.

Knives are still a big concern however, as many teens take the risk of carrying them, despite Zombie style blades are in the process of being made illegal to import or sell.

One can still carry a handgun in public in many places, some can be carried openly some can be carried concealed, some with a permit, some states without a permit.

This is an indicator that you probably don't live in the US and thus don't share our values regarding arms. Which, if true, completely negates anything you have to say on the issue.

IF, OTOH, you are a US citizen, then your opinion is against current 2nd Amendment jurisprudence as well as reality. Case in point is where you say; gentlemen were allowed to carry a handgun up until 1936. This is not only incorrect (because no one was "allowed" to carry arms, it's a Right) but it also incorrectly states reality.

The US government cannot legislate in regards to keeping and bearing arms. The current and ongoing litigation cases are based on this point and the case law is falling in favor of the people rather than government.

Further, reality is shown in pictures as well as paintings from the time. Those pictures and paintings show that the people did indeed bear arms in public and they did so unhindered for the most part. Even in other nations such as Canada, people were known to bear arms on a general basis and it was only in specific places (which are now deep deep deep blue and restrictive of almost all individual liberties and constitutional guarantees) that the right was unable to be exercised.

Your question at the end seeks an all encompassing absolute for an answer and as such, by it's very premise, that makes your question illogical and false-fronted. You aren't really seeking an answer, you're trying to push a "gotcha" narrative. Sorry, not going to play that game.
