Setting Old West (a year later)

Sam

OOC: Sam's his real name, but he could easily have used one or more fake names in the past, so feel free to go with anything you have in mind.

IC: After the Marshall left I headed towards the kitchen, still a little nervous of being around the lawman. I stopped when I remembered Dan's question, and turned back to let him know I'd see him after I'd cooked breakfast for Virginia.

Halfway to the kitchen, I noticed Sheila on her way up the stairs, carrying a tray of food. I called out her name, causing her to look around nervously. I jogged up the stairs towards her.

"Is that for Virginia?" I asked, gesturing towards the delicious smelling food she'd prepared. She nodded.

"I was about to make Ginnie a late breakfast myself. Do you mind if I come up with you?"

Beth

IC: Smiling warmly back at Dan. Sniffing the air a little- I guessed that he was also the publican because of the smell of beer. Making eye contact, "Why thankyou Dan. Im after a room. I would like to stay in Fortune a while, Oh and I would love a bath. Im sure I have many bruises and at least 2 layers of dirt covering me from being on that Stage coach"
Another man came up to us. "Afternoon Ma'am" he said. I tilted my head slightly and replied "afternoon". He was quite a good looking man. I smiled at him.
My eyesbrows shot up when he thanked Dan and Sam for saving his life. I began to wonder what kind of town I had wandered into.
The word Marshal got my attention. I shifted a little uneasilly in my seat. Oh well, Im sure things will work out soon enough.
"Congratulations Sam" I heard myself saying when the marshall mentioned about his baby.
After they walked off, I focused back on Dan. Smiling at him. "Now how much is a room?" I asked.

Dan smiled warmly, he always saved the warmest smiles for is customers, especially pretty ones. He held out his hand, and she took it gracefully.
"Well, that all depends on what kind of room you'd like."
He showed her a few different rooms. The top one had it's own bath room (no toilet, but a bath) and a nice view of the town.
"This one costs a bit more, if you have the extra money, I suggest you get this one. It also has an entrance from the back, so you can sneak up those guys during the night."
He snickered softly.
"One the second floor we have twon rooms, one views the town, but is smaller than the top one, and the other shows the other side, which is pretty much desert. Both of them cost the same, pretty cheap."
They made their way to the bottom floor. One final room, which was basically a bed and a love seat. Dan opened the door, but slipped. The woman fell down on the bed, and Dan followed her. He looked into her lovely eyes shamelessly.
"I'm sorry," he helped her up.
"This room," he said, a bit shaky, "is the cheapest of all. It's not really a ladie's room, more for men who just need a place to sleep off their drunkness."
He then took her back to the bar, sitting her upon one of the stools. He made her a cold iced tea (did they have iced tea back then? Oh well, they had lemonaide, I know that) a cold glass of lemonaide and then leaned on the bar next to her.
If he didn't know any better he could swear he was flirting with her. Immediately he stood up, and brushed himself off. The beer smell came back to him, oh man she must think he was some sort of pervert or something.
"So, which'll it be?" he asked.

Beth

Taking Dans hand, Beth let him guide her up the stairs. His hand was manly, and warm. Beth smiled softly to herself up the stairs.
The top room was beautiful, oh and it had a bath. It was a lovely room. When Dan mentioned the entrance at the back where she could bring men up...Beth nearly died. She swallowed hard as she walked out the door, taking another look at the room.
All the way down the stairs Dans words and his snigger rolled over in her mind. Hmmmm....and another secret smile crept over Beths lips.
When Dan opened the door to the room on the bottom floor, he slipped, sending me crashing down on the bed. And him on top of me. Those eyes.
"are you alright?" I asked, looking up into his eyes. She saw something rather alluring .
The strong smell of beer came back to her, and she wondered if he was drunk. Apologising he helped me up. We headed to the bar.
Sipping the lemonaide and smiling, remembering his weight on top of me made me shift in the seat some. Crossing my legs, and uncrossing them, wanting a bath.
Looking him dead in the eye, smiling
"I will take the top room please. I have enough money to last me a while, but then Im going to be looking around for somewhere to work. Do you know of anyone that is looking for a cook, or cleaner? Im an excellent cook."

sheila

"I'm sure Ginnie would be happy to see you again." I half smile, seeing the pretty young thing in the tavern below and way Dan was fumbling around. I bit my lip, I had no right to him after all, there was no ring on my finger.

We got to their room and with a soft tap on door opened it to see the baby sleeping and Ginnie looking radiant. I envied her, she had a good husband and a beautiful son. More than I'd probably ever have. My father would beat me before marrying me off to some rich old slimeball. And if I didn't want to think about that. I set down the food and put on a smile

"Well, as a matter of fact," Damnit, Sheila cooked for the customers. He just thought of that, he was in search of a good cook forever, and then Sheila took it up.
He sighed, there were lots of places to get a good cooking job.
"There's been a gambling tavern set over yonder. Lucky something, they call it, I believe they are in need of a fine chef, I'm sorry I can't be of much assistance in that area, but you tell them Dan sent you and I think they'll treat you just fine."
He lowered his head under the bar, taking out a nice clean piece of paper.
"I'll cut the original cost of the room some, being as your new to the area and don't plan on leaving anytime soon. How's 20 cents a day sound?"
(20 cents for a room? Holy shit, I need a time machine)
He quickly made out a contract, just a little formality, he didn't even have the people sign their own names, he just wanted to have some proof in case time for payment came up and there was a dispute.
Although, he actually wouldn't mind having a nice long chat about thing with her, perhaps in the bedroom, perhaps over a nice...
Sheila?
He stopped writing, the pen jerked sideways along the paper, leaving an awful trail. He smiled, embarrased and crossed that out.
How on earth could he forget about her? He looked into those pretty eyes, actually it wasn't that hard.
Dan shook his head, no absolutely not. He was already having one torrent affair, he couldn't handle two.
"Just put your X on the bottom line, and I can help bring in your bags myself."
He saw her hesitate.
"If you have any questions or concerns just tell me," he placed his hand on hers, "Please, I'm here to help.

Beth

OOC I have found a friend to come and play. I hope you all dont mind.

IC: If you have any questions or concerns just tell me," he placed his hand on hers, "Please, I'm here to help" said Dan. My heart skipped a beat. Ever since Dan fell on me on the bed, my heart has skipped a beat when he looks into my dark brown eyes.
He seemed to enjoy looking in them. I dont know why. I dont think they are all that pretty. They are not a pretty blue or a sparkling green. They are almond shaped brown eyes. Most plain I think.
20 cents a day...thats wonderful.
Smiling at him "thankyou. Your a most generous man."
Signing my name carefully I handed him back the pen. Once more our hands touched. Our eyes met and I blushed deep red again. I turned my head away quickly as a tall, dark handsome man walked through the door.
He had grey eyes, and a scar on his left cheek. He startled me. I looked up into his eyes, they fixed on me...I could feel my cheeks blushing madly.
He asked if the bar was open. Dan pointed him in the direction of the bar. He tipped his hat at me, "Ma'am" I watched as the stranger walked to the bar. His long black coat moved as he walked showing glimpses of one gun he wore.
Dan picked up my bags and showed me upstairs to my room.
I smiled at him. His eyes once more bore into mine.
"ttthhhhank you" I stammered.

U.S.Marshal

I left the saloon and went to Molly’s place to get my horse. Molly was in the yard feeding the dozen or so chickens she kept for eggs, her copper colored hair gleaming in the afternoon sun. She didn’t hear me til I was right behind her. “Hello Molly,” I said. She jumped with a scream, chicken feed went up in the air and the chickens scattered to all points of the compass. “Thomas Kelly, you scared me half to death,” she scolded, “sneaking up on me like that.” I couldn’t help laughing and after a minute she was laughing too. “Don’t ever do that again,” she laughed.
“I have to go to the telegraph office. Then I’m going to take jughead out for a run.” “That horse tried to bite and kick me when I brought him from the livery, she said. “Yeah
he’s a mean one. He dosen’t like anyone,” I told her. She put her arms around my neck and kissed me a long lingering kiss. “Ok,” she said, “but don’t be long.” I went in the
stable to get that ugly jugheaded horse. I hung my saddle bags on the apple barrel and leaned my rifle against a stall door. I put a halter on him and led him outside. After I saddled him I tied him to the ring by the back door then got my rifle and saddle bags. I put
the rifle in the saddle boot . Then I dug in the saddle bag for the wanted poster so I would know where to send for Sam’s reward. I had a half dozen outstanding wanted posters in a small packet. As I look for Jon Harvy’s poster I saw a face on one that set me back a step or two. Samual Tyler Johnson, wanted for bank robbery. I know that face, I thought, or at least I think I do. I climbed up on old jughead and he wasn’t happy about that so we danced around the yard for a little bit, til he got it out of his system. I rode to the depot and after I sent the telegraph about Harvy, I went to the saloon. I decided to keep the flyer about Sam to myself until I could talk to him. After all he did save my life.
I walked in the saloon, Dan was just walking down the stairs with same young lady I’d met before. “Ma’am,” I nodded, Dan can I talk with you for a minute?” “Sure marshal,” he said. I went to the end of the bar. He excused himself to the lady and walked down the bar to meet me. When he reached my end of the bar he asked. “What can I do for you Marshal?” I said, “If Sam is around and if you can get someone to watch the bar for awhile I’d like to talk to and him, maybe in your office.

Virginia

I was just starting back across the room when Sheila knocked and came in, a tray of food in her hand, and Sam right behind her.

The look in his eye said he was none too thrilled to see me out of bed.

I thanked Sheila and started to take the tray from her, but Sam jumped between us and grabbed it with a rather pointed look that said 'get back in bed!'
Sheila had done so much for my little family. While I slowly made my way back to the bed, I wondered what I could do to repay her.

Sheila

I left the happy family with a sad smile and headed down the back stairs. I didn't want to see anyone, I headed to my favorite thinking spot glancing over the sparkling river. Perhaps it was time I left, my brother might be able to help me out. I ran my fingers through my hair and pulling out a locket I let one tear slide down my face. I gazed into the picture of my lovely mother long dead. I gripped the locket the metal impressing into my hand as I saw my step mother. The evil cruel bitch who had my father's heart. She had turned him so quickly none of us even knew it. Her two slow sons were filthy. I took a shallow breath trying to forget what I left behind. I opened my fist and looked at picture. I wondered about my mother's family. My cousin's had moved to frontier when I was young, perhaps I could find them. I gazed over land and wondered how long it would take to tie things up and move on. I could feel the cold shadow of my past on my neck.

Dan sighed, he knew this was coming, it was simply a matter of time. He nodded outside, to the sherrif's office.
"Make your way over there, Sam should be there now. It's about noon. I think we all have some things to discuss."
That new woman sure did look at him a lot. He wondered if maybe there was a small crush.
He was flattered, it had been forever since someone had even looked at him with those... those hungry eyes.
Walking back to his room, he saw Sheila was in there. He smiled, walking behind her. He let his big hands roam slightly around he body as he nipped at her neck.
"Sweety, the fellas and I have a few things we need to discuss at the office. I'll be back in less than an hour. I don't have much else to do tonight, so..."
He let the words trail off, and looked into her eyes lovingly.
"I love her," he whispered, and kissed her gently.
(insert Sheila's response here...)

Dan nodded, and kissed her goodbye. There were a few things to get out of the way now. He just hoped Sam was there.
He unhooked the Sherrif's star from his vest, and shined it up nicely.
Sam would look good in it, he really would.
Dan walked in, sitting down behind the desk.
"One thing before we start gentlemen, whatever is said in this room doesn't leave this room. I know we're all men of the law,"
he threw the star at Sam, and winked,
"But this isn't the law."
He gave both men copies of the letters that were sent to him from Sheila's father.
"Her real name is Maxine... I forget the last name. It's in the letter there, right under her picture. Dubois or something."
He sighed deeply.
"She ran away from home, changed her name, and is now living with me. I love her, I truly do with all my heart, but I'm not the sherrif anymore. I'm only the Deputy Sherrif."
He took out the Deputy Sherrif's star, and placed it on his vest.
"So, what I want to hear from you gentlemen is a unanimous answer. We are either all in this together, and keep it a secret," it almost pained him to say this last part, "or we take her in."
He fouhght back the tears, but he knew they would come later.
A whole year he had kept this inside, there was some relief in telling another soul. He hadn't even told Sheila, he wondered why. It would probably relieve her, but still....

Sam

I smiled a thank you to Sheila as she left the room. I thought I sensed a hint sadness in her eyes. A shame, she seemed like the kind of person that deserved a little happiness in her life.

With that thought in my mind, I turned back to the source of all my happiness, my wonderful family.

"Here you go honey," I said, placing the tray of food down on her lap, sneaking a playful kiss from her soft lips as I leaned over her.

As Virginia ate, I walked quietly around to the other side of the bed and crouched down, gazing with a mixture of wonder and awe at the living, breathing symbol of our love as he slept peacefully. I was constantly amazed just how incredible life could truly be.

I glanced up at Virginia just as she looked down at me, our eyes meeting at the very same instant. I reached towards her and took her hand in mine.

"You did good honey," I said, beaming, "I love you." Her smile in return melted by heart, just like it had the first time I saw it, a year ago. She looked positively radiant - motherhood obviously suited her.

When she was almost finished with her meal, I stood up.

"I've got to go see Dan for a few minutes, okay?" I asked. "I'll be straight back."

"Okay Sam," she replied with a smile.

"And stay in bed!" I added with a laugh.

With one last loving kiss before I left, I headed out to the Sheriff's office to meet Dan. He wasn't there when I arrived but I didn't have long to wait, as he and the Marshall came in. I tried to hide the nervousness I felt around the lawman.

I grinned when Dan tossed me the Sheriff's badge. As I pinned it to my vest, my first thought was that I couldn't wait to tell Virginia. She'd be so proud!

I listened silently to what he said about Sheila, or Maxine, as it seemed her real name was. Once he'd finished I thought quietly for a moment.

"Well I know I've barely been in the job for a minute," I started, "but it seems to me she hasn't really done anything wrong, not from what I've heard so far. I can sure understand her wanting to leave her past behind, especially if it holds bad memories for her. Sometimes a fresh start and a new life is the only way to escape. I'd like to hear her reasons for what she did, but as it stands, my vote is to help her any way we can."

U.S. Marshal

"Dan is sam around? I have something I'd like to talk to you and him about. Maybe in your office," I said. "Why don't you go over to the sheriff's office, Sam should be there now. I'll be there in a few minutes," he said. I said, "I'll wait for you outside." I rolled a smoke while I waited. Dan came out in a minute or so and we walked across the street to his office.
We went in the office, Sam was sitting in a chair beside the desk. Dan walked around and sat down behind the desk. And flipped the sheriff's star to Sam and pinned the deputy star on his own shirt. Dan showed us the flyer on Maxine Dubois. the 17 year old daughter of big Henri Dubois, who ran away about a year and a half ago. Big Henri ownes about half of Chester parish back in Louisiana. I was passing through Shreveport just about a year ago, bringing a prisoner back to Baton Rouge, it was all the talk about how she ran so she wouldn't have to marry one of her father's business partners. And there was some talk about her step-brothers sayin they couldn't wait catch her alone in the barn and break her in for her husband to be. I'm sure that helped to make up her mind to run. And who could blame her. I agreed with Sam when he said she hasn't done anything wrong, and we would help her any way we could. I said, "that $100 reward could cause some problems but we would handle them as they came along." I told them all that. "But I said, that's not why I wanted to talk to you.

OCC I hope this little bit of back ground on Sheila/Maxine is ok. It's as accurate as I can remember from the first thread.

IC I took the wanted poster out of my shirt pocket. I unfolded it and put it on the desk in front of Sam. "I'm not saying it is you. But this feller looks a lot like you. He's not wanted very bad there's not even a reward offered. This is just a keep an eye out notice for law men. You have a beautiful wife and a new baby. And I've talked to a few people around town about you and they seem to be of one mind. That is that they like and respect you are glad that you're going to be their full time sheriff. So unless you killed someone that didn't need it, I'd be inclined to put your name on that unknown marker up there on the and send to capitol that your dead.Like I said I don't know if it is you or not. But if it is I would like you to tell me about it?

Sheila

"I love her," were the words that slipped from his mouth I nodded trying to sort things out wondering who she was. I shivered as he left wondering whether I could bring myself to stay one more night. I brushed away tears and packed up my things hiding the bag along with a few other things in the stable.

One more night and I'd be on my own again. I penned a letter for Ginnie, giving her some helpful hints and trying not to let tears hit the creamy parchment.

I managed to make it through dinner rush and was cleaning up making sure everything was clean and proper before I left.

Ooc: I can't believe I wrote "her" instead of "you". Oh man, talk about a bad typo.

Dan nodded to both men, knowing he wasn't needed anymore. He had spoken his peace. He quickly gathered the posters along with the letters and locked them in one of the drawers.
He walked back to the hotel, feeling better than ever.
Sheila wasn't in her room.
She wasn't in the kitchen.
She wasn't even in the hotel.
Dan looked eveywhere for her. He tried every place he could think of, but she was gone.
He quickly ran out to the stables, and watched as she got on one of the horses. He had to tell her something.
(think fast pooh...)
"It's true what I said earlier you know," he called out to her. She stopped dead in her tracks. He walked carefully to her, knowing she was scared and frightened, more importantly lonely. She was only 18, she was supposed to be feeling this way.
"I do love her Maxine," he had never called her by her real name before. It didn't taste very good in her mouth. He walked to the front of the horse, petting it gently.
"I love Sheila, with all of my heart I love her. She's helped me in more ways than you would know."
A silent tear dropped from to his cheek. He let it stand there alone.
"You changed your name, I don't care. You have a bad past, I don't care. All I care about is you. I don't care about anything else but you anymore. There was always you, always."
He stepped aside, looking down the long road out of fortune.
"I know what your feeling right now," he didn't look at her. That road seemed longer than any he had ever known. It stretched out for miles upon miles.
"I'm not going to force you to do something you don't want to do. I'm not going to make you stay somewhere you want to stay, I'm not even going to stop you if you take that horse and ride out of here this very instant, but I want you to know one thing. If..."
he stopped, choking up. The words came out in a blur,
"If you leave here, your taking my heart with you."
Dan lowered his head to the ground.
He walked back towards the hotel silently.
(I need a tissue)

Beth

Standing at the top of the Stairs outside her door, Beth saw a very sad looking Dan walking back to the saloon. Frowning, she wondered what had gone wrong. Its hard being new in a town. She could only guess what was causing Dans head to sag so sadly. Lost love? 'Well I dont know about that one...but a woman for sure' Beth thought to herself.
Looks back at the bath she had drawn herself. Walking back inside her room, closing the door but not locking it, she begins to undress. Taking her stockings down her legs slowly, enjoying being alone, and certainly looking forward to the bath. Humming softly to herself, she emerses herself in the hot soapy water.
"AAAAHHHHHHHHHH OHHHH that feels sooooooo good" I said as I closed my eyes and relaxed.

OOC:

Michael Trent is around 5'10 he is of good build, he has grey eyes, and a scar on his left cheek. He is a bounty hunter who is fond of his black trench coat and likes to hide his Revolver underneath it.

IC:

I have just arrived in a new town called "Fortune", I thought it would be good to stop by the local saloon to get a look at the locals. As I walked in to the bar the first person that caught my attention was a girl at the bar, she had very pretty eyes and long brown hair. As I walked towards the bar I couldn't help but take a long look at her, she met my gaze and blushed. I asked the man who seemed to be the proprietor of the saloon whether the bar was open and he gestured me towards the bar. I tipped my hat at the girl and acknowledged her and moved towards the bar to sit and get a drink.

Sam

I felt my chest tighten as the Marshall pulled out the wanted poster, my worst fear having been realised. I listened pensively to what he had to say.

"I ain't gonna lie to you Marshall," I replied finally, we both know it's me on that poster, or at least the man I used to be. I'm not proud of what I did, I was stupid. I fell in with the wrong sort of people, my partner Cole...well, he did a lot of bad things in his time, things that maybe I coulda stopped if I'd stood up to him sooner. I was always there, watching his back. I saw some of the things he did, even talked him out of some of 'em, but I was too scared to really stand up to him. It was only meeting Virginia that gave the strength to do it in the end. She changed my life in so many ways...she changed ME. I feel I've been given a second chance Marshall, to put things right, and I plan on doing everything I can for my family and this town."

Dan went inside, checking on the customers. They all seemed happy, he smiled at them, knowing he simply wanted to cuddle up with a bottle of scotch for the evening.
He made it upstairs. That's funny, there was something stuck under Beth's door.
Dan checked it, it wasn't locked. He quickly opened it up. It was a simple piece of linen. He had always warned the maid's of leaving these around. Someone would trip.
He looked right by the bathroom, there was another one. He would have to talk to the evening girl.
He walked over, and bent down to pick it up, nonchalantly opening the door with his backside. He realized it wasn't a linen at all, it was the ladie's glove.
He ponded for a moment, bent over in the position he was. Should he leave it there? She might come back and find it was in another place, now that would look odd, then again if she came in here and found he was bent over holding onto her one silky glove that might also...
He looked between his legs. OH MY GOD!
Dan stood up straight, and smiled politely, his cheeks already beginning to grow the reddest he had ever seen them.
"I'm sorry Miss," he said, it was all he could say. He was in her room, and she ws naked.
That was the only thing that could top off such a wonderful day like today.

Beth

Enjoying my bath, letting my mind wander through the thoughts. Letting out a loud sigh. Stretching my legs out, I closed my eyes again, beginning to drift off into dreams.

Then I hear the door open...OH MY GOSH...ummmm..there was Dans butt in the door way and Dan looking through his legs at me. He was blushing and babbling..

I had to giggle, which turned into a laugh. Infact I dont think Ihad laughed this much in a long time.

I choked out a "hello, do you always make room calls?"

A slight wave of relief hit him. At least she didn't think he was some pervert or something. Still, the situation was odd enough as it is.
"I... uhhh, was just checking to see if you were in. It looks like you are in, that's great, because..."
lying was just not his thing,
"Because I was going to see if you were free tomorrow. I don't have much planned, and wanted to go job searching with you."
He let out a big sigh, it was the worst lie he had ever created, but at least he had made something up.
"But, your obviously busy, as I can see. So, I'll leave you be, and you can get back to me later," he said, reaching for the door.
It was all the way open, to get it he would have to actually step inside. Taking a deep breath he did, and grabbed for the latch.

Beth

Oh wait...your not going to offer to wash my back?? You dont have to run away. Im sure Im not the first woman you have seen naked.
Smiling at him, she held out the wash cloth.

He was about to close the door, finally ending this whole charade once and for...
What did she say?
He looked at her, seriously this time. Did she want him to... to rub her back?
He breathed in and out for a minute. Perhaps he could, oh no what was he thinking, the love of his life had just run out on him and all he wanted to do was get it on with one of the customers.
He smiled at her, well maybe he did need some company. Besides, he could always have that scotch later... looking at her in the water, he would definately need it.
Dan took the rag, and made his way behind her. He made sure not to see anything that shouldn't have been seen. He tried to be a gentleman, although that had probably been chucked out the window when he first went into her room.
He went onto his knees, and began rubbing her back softly. He didn't trail anywhere he should have, and made sure his hands staid out of the water.
"So," his voice squeaked, he tried to calm it down, "So, where are you from exactly?"

Beth

Sighing softly as Dan began to wash my back. Closing my eyes completely relaxed. Until he asked where was I from. I tensed a little. I knew he had been the sherrif of the town. I had been speaking to a few of the girls.
"ummm Im from New York, originally. My parents became sick and they died. I was living with my uncle and aunt. But I didnt umm agree on the choice of living they had picked for me."
I sighed. How could I tell him that my uncle ran a cat house, and how in Gods name was I going to explain that HE was going to .....no...no more. Don't think about it.
Dan seemed to relax a little. Do I ask about Sheila? I had learnt from the girls that he and her had been together. Was it because of her that he walked away from the stables so sadly.
I bit my lip. Not knowing quite what to do.

U.S. Marshal

"Ok Sam, I sent a couple of telegraphs to a few lawmen I know around the state,Have to see if your wanted for anything I dont know about. You say your not and I believe you. When I get the answers, you can go up on the hill and change that grave marker. Something like
Samual Tyler Johnson
Died of cholera
Aug 1870
Should keep anyone from digging up the body in the near future. So I guess that's it.
I stood and headed for the door. I said, "Oh by the way Sam, there's a feller in town. he's wearing a black duster, I don't know him but I know his kind. He's an outlaw maybe on the run or maybe a bounty hunter. Which ever, he's not the kind you want hanging around your town. I'd keep my eye on him if I were you. I'll see you later." I left the sheriff's office and rode out of town heading west. I thought I ride out to the hills and let old jughead run some. I should be back by supper time.
