I agree in general. I loved Super 8, however. Yes, it was cribbed from other movies, but it was still very well done, and hit me emotionally where ET was supposed to and didn't.S2 of Lost is when I realized JJ Abrams only knows how to emulate other, better, artists and left on his own can’t find his ass with both hands.
But my wife loved it
Also, I enjoyed Cloverfield. Stolen, but still awesome.

Well, I wouldn't say he was always competent at it. Successful, yes. But The Rise of Skywalker was a barely a palimpsest of Return of the Jedi, and poorly scraped at that.
