I have three memorial tattoos. All small, all clustered together, and all hidden by 99% of the clothing I wear. But I know they are there. They're for my cats...I have had many, and each time one passes, I add a paw print to the line. Right now there are only three, but I will eventually have more; they go down my outer thigh. The dog tattoo is a memorial ... When I look in the mirror, I remember them both.
Jeez....now I'm going to start sobbing again.
All my tattoos have meaning of some sort or another, but the memorial tattoos are very special. I had zero experience with death when the first cat died, and I was heartbroken for weeks. My wife finally suggested a memorial tattoo, and while the actual tattoo process wasn't cathartic (more like OW FUCK), carrying them around with me is. I don't look at them or even think about them much, but when I do, I touch them and remember. "This is Wu." "This is Toadie." "This is Amanita."
In fact, now that I think about it, I love these the best of all my tattoos. They are small and plain, and I do love my other tattoos, but these have the most impact on me on a regular basis.
I have considered having their ashes rubbed in, but I don't know too much about that, so I've avoided it so far.
