Slave to the emperor

“Yes I know sweetie. Things will be strange for a good while. You will be looked down upon by the ignorant privileged. But behind these chamber doors…we will have our own existence. I think you might like.” He said and kissed her cheek then turned her toward him.

She smiled up at him; he respected her and wanted her to be happy. Living on the streets she had to be able to tell if a person was telling the truth. It was necessary for survival. She could tell by looking in his eyes that he was an honest man.

“One reason I picked you was for your spirit. You can rise above what others see you as. For you are much more Althea.” He said and took her hand and walked to the doors. They were escorted to the breakfast feast and she stayed close by his side. She blushed as the nobles looked down at her, disgusted to be around a woman of her status. As he was seated she was pulled away to the side.

She watched as the others sat down to eat ignoring her. She stepped on a guards foot as he tried to touch her making him scowl. She saw Samuel look at her anger in his eyes.

“Make sure she at least has something to eat. I get she can’t sit with me because of you ignorant traditionalists. She is coming on my countryside lunch and I don’t want her to pass out from a lack of nourishment.” He said sarcastically with tone. She smiled as he defended her and was taken to a separate table with some simpler food. She listened closely to the conversation as she ate in silence.

He ate and then rolled his eyes.

“Seriously…why so much? I am one man. We have starving people outside. This is why you people lost the damn war. You have no idea how to take care of your own people.” He said in a loud angry voice of disgust. She smiled again. He was a good ruler, better than the previous leaders of her country. She thought maybe, under him, peoples lives would improve. She stood as he walked over to her and took his hand and he left the for the throne room.

"thank you. Most people I've met wouldnt have said that. You must be a good leader. You're people must truly appreciate what you do."

He walked to the throne room and had her walking with him.

"Thank you. Most people I've met wouldn’t have said that. You must be a good leader. You're people must truly appreciate what you do."

“Some do and some don’t. I have many lords that don’t like the idea of taking care of peasants. They want to keep their power by keeping people weak.” He said as he arrived in the throne room.

He sat down and directed her to sit on a chair to his right hand side.
“In two days I shall return to my homeland. I hope we have set up a structure to serve this kingdom and take care of the people. I shall require regular reports on the farming and water supply projects that we have people working on. I also want a report and someone to take charge that each person has a roof on their home much less that everyone has a home.” he said in a commanding voice.

“How can you have a kingdom if people are homeless and hungry? That is asking for a revolt. So…make it happen that no one sleeps on the street.” he adds.

He goes through the daily agenda as he nods and smiles with a wink at Althea before lunch time.
“Make way as I desire a lunch outside the gates just before the forest. I shall have my companion travel in my chariot.” he said.

One of the higher ranked servants asked him if he meant his slave.
“MY COMPANION. She deserves some respect. Especially if she shares my chambers with me.” he said with a harsh tone.

She sat next to him and smiled to herself. This kingdom was going to be much better off with him as a ruler. She had seen children die from starvation in the streets. No matter how many loads of bread she could buy for them, there was always another needing food.

As it came time for lunch she listened to him call for a chariot referring to her as hhis companion. She looked down as she was called a slave. “MY COMPANION. She deserves some respect. Espercially if she shares my chambers with me.” he said with a harsh tone.

She smiled up at him squeezing his hand. He respected her, treating her as an equal.

They got into a royal carriage as he helped Althea in and had her sit with him, once he was informed the food was prepared for his picnic excursion. They traveled out the front gate with a minimal guard force for protection. They stopped once they got a few 100 yards from the forest. He got out and surveyed the area. He then took Althea’s hand and helped her out.
“Stay close to me Althea.” He said nonchalant.

He walked with her for a bit then took a seat. It was a while before lunch would be served.
“This is beautiful country Althea. How often have you traveled out here? I imagine most would be afraid of robbers and bandits. This is a perfect area for assassins even.” He states looking around.

“Yet it is core of what is right in the world as far as nature goes and beauty.” He adds smiling as pats her leg and hand.

She smiled walking with him holding his hand staying by his side.

As he spoke she looked towards the guards narrowing her eyes. They were whispering amongst themselves glancing their way every so often. It happened so fast. The glint of silver. A guard turning. The knife being thrown. Then she realized. General Caddius hadn't been the only one trying to kill him. She threw her body in front of his her back facing the assassins. She screamed as the blade hit her. Luckily, it was not a fatal wound but the pain was still intense

The four guards were off speaking amongst themselves as Samuel was enjoying time with Althea. He did however have a feeling something wasn’t right.

Apparently a knife was thrown and Althea threw her body in front of his back. He grabbed hr breaking her fall to the ground. He pull out the dagger. He then tore his own robe.
“Here hold this down with pressure. You shall be fine. I will deal with these traitors then we will get you back for proper medical care.” He said kissing her lips.

He was furious of course. He had not allowed anyone to see the armor he was wearing under his robe that covered his front and back. He could have taken that knife but she showed courage and then some.

He pulled out his sword with his right hand and then his half sword dagger in his left inverting holding it to slash with. He approached the first of four soldiers. He blocked the him across his throat and spilled his blood like mighty river as the man dropped to his knees and died instantly.

Samuel leaped in the air attacking the next two soldiers, one he kicked off his feet and the other he came down with his sword and stabbed him in the gut with his mighty dagger. He tore the man’s skin like a lamb being butchered. He looked into his eyes as the man dropped to his knees and died. The fourth soldier came hard and fast yelling as Samuel threw his dagger into the charging soldier’s face. The result was much worse than instant death as his own mother would be challenged to recognize her traitor son.

Samuel turned as he saw fear in the last of the four traitors that tried to assassinate him.
“You have one chance to live. Who sent you?” Samuel commanded.

The man still engaged Samuel and was easily defeated with the emperor’s superior swordsman skills. Samuel blocked his strike and quickly went on the attack till he found the opportunity to overwhelm his opponent and force him to lose his sword. He then had him on the ground with his blade to his throat.
“WHO?” Samuel commanded.

‘I am sorry my king. It was your brother and the lords that support him. There are 8 that wish you to be dead.’ He said pleading for his life.

“Your name is Jonathon. I know your family…your father and sister. If you pledge to me…I shall spare your life and make you a part of my secret guard that I shall train personally.” Samuel states and the man agrees.

Samuel does a brief ceremony with his sword and words about honor, integrity, justice and duty to God.
“Jonathan you must help me take Althea back quickly and then we shall round any other traitors back at the palace.” He commands.

‘My lord they are all back in our homeland. They are even raising armies against you. I shall reveal all that I know.’ He tells Samuel as they hurry with Althea.

Once back Samuel commands the doctors to get Althea stitched up and put in his chambers for rest.
“Your bravery was inspiring as I have ever seen Althea.” He said kissing her lips.

She felt Samuel catch her as she fell trying to not cry out from the pain. Her fists were clenched as he pulled the knife out. She heard a ripping noise and nodded as he spoke barely able to hear the words. Althe relaxed a little as he kissed her and lay down. She kept pressure on the wound and watched weakly as he fought.

He was brave and very skilled. It should have been a difficult fight, four on one, yet he defeated them quickly, like an eagle against a few rats. “WHO?”

She felt someone pick her up and winced in pain. she clutched Samuels arm tears rolling down her cheeks. Shed been in many fights but had never taken a knife before. She wasn't even sure why she did it. She... He... She loved him she realized before she closed her eyes.

“Your bravery was inspiring as I have ever seen Althea.” He said kissing her lips.

She woke up to see him looking down at her and smiled as he kissed her. "Stay with me, please." she said quietly

He watched over her holding her hand until he saw her eyes open.

She woke up to see him looking down at her and smiled as he kissed her. "Stay with me, please." she said quietly

“Of course. There is no where else I wish to be.” He replied holding her hand and kissing it.

“Just promise you won’t do something brave again. That is my job not yours Althea.” He said smiling.

He knew he had preparations for war but for now he had to make sure she would be okay and recover fully.

“Of course. There is no where else I wish to be.” He replied holding her hand and kissing it.

“Just promise you won’t do something brave again. That is my job not yours Althea.” He said smiling.

She smiled back at him and curled up against his chest. "you know I have difficult doing as I'm told." She was glad that he was here with her and she smiled. That was all that she needed. "I'm just glad that you're safe." she kissed his lips gently and lay back down. She massaged his shoulders noticing how tense they were.

She smiled back at him and curled up against his chest.
"you know I have difficult doing as I'm told."

“Yes I sorta figured that.” He said smiling.

"I'm just glad that you're safe." she kissed his lips gently and lay back down. She massaged his shoulders.

“Althea…I have been a warrior most of my life. I have held a sword since I was like 6 years old and fought for life and death by the time I was 10 years old as invaders were attacking our palace. I may be a young emperor by most standards but as you have seen…I am very capable in combat.” He stated.

“I have lost too many close to me. I can’t afford for you to put yourself out there like that again.” He adds and sighs.

“A very bad war is ahead. I will have you taken to a safe area as I lead my armies against my brother’s army and the lords of my homeland. If something should happen to me…you will be provided for.” He said somberly.

She sat up quickly flinching in pain and frowned at him. "Listen to me. You are not going to die. Let me come with you so I cab help you."

She knew he would not let her come. She was already hurt and he had just told her he didn't want her to get killed. She kissed his lips and her dress fell off one shoulder. She didn't bother to fix it.

"Samuel... I... I think I love you." she blushed wondering what his reaction would be. She was telling the truth. She just hoped he felt the same way

She sat up quickly and frowned at him. "Listen to me. You are not going to die. Let me come with you so I can help you."

“Careful Althea…you need rest and to not move. I have had that battle wound and know first hand you need to be careful.” He replied.

He put his arm around her and laid back down gently.
“And no you are not coming with. We will meet their forces once all the armies loyal to me have arrived. I have been studying a terrain to give us the advantage as it appears they will out number us.” He added

She kissed his lips and her dress fell off one shoulder.
“Althea please lay still sweetie.” He urged her.

"Samuel... I... I think I love you." she blushed

“And I love you my sweet. Although we have know each other a short time, I love your spirit and loyalty much less bravery. You will make a fine queen should I survive this great battle. But I can’ have anyone know who you are to me..for if I lose they will surely take your head.” He states smiling.

She nodded as he helped her lie down again. "I understand Samuel. Just promise me you'll be careful. I don't want to lose you."

“And I love you my sweet. Although we have know each other a short time, I love your spirit and loyalty much less bravery. You will make a fine queen should I survive this great battle. But I can’ have anyone know who you are to me..for if I lose they will surely take your head.” He states smiling

She blushed smiling up at him as he told her he loved her. They barely knew each other, but, she had never felt like this towards anyone. And there were very few people other than children she would take q knife for. However she knew few people as good and kind as Samuel.

Her eyes widened as he mentioned making her a queen. She was surprised and had never have thought of that as a possibility in her life. As he told her that he couldn't let anyone know she nodded touching his cheek. "Thank you."

Remembering that he had told her to rest she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep

She nodded as he helped her lie down again. "I understand Samuel. Just promise me you'll be careful. I don't want to lose you."

He laughs softly.
“You do know that I act as a general and lead my troops into battle much less call out battle strategies. I lead the cavalry when it is time for that attack. But I plan on coming back in one piece.” He states.

He continued on with professing his love for her.

"Thank you."

“I know it is a lot Althea but we will have proper time to work through it all. I mean I told you acted as royalty…I know you disagreed but with time you shall be a fine queen.” He said and kissed her.

She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. He met with his advisors and made battle plans.

He gave his trusted generals and military leaders instruction on finding a certain terrain and having archers practice their trade. He had his infantry practice the box in one move he used against the barbarians from the east.
“We are outnumbered possibly 12 to 1 is the last report. We have to use every advantage.” He told his trusted military leaders.

Althea woke up and walked around the room. She gazed out the window singing quietly to herself smiling. As she sang she stood up and began to dance. She lifted her leg high and turned. As the door opened she stopped singing and looked up

Samuel came to check on Althea and his eyes almost exploded.
“What are you doing? You need to rest…you can’t be dancing and moving around Althea.” He pleaded with her.

“Healing takes time sweetie.” He adds as he takes her hand and ushers her back to the bed. “Don’t make me restrain you to this bed.” He adds smiling.

She blushed deeply. She was very active and hated standing still. "I feel fine." But she saw the look on Samuels face and knew he was upset. "Ill rest for your sake," she kissed him gently on the lips singing softly to him. It was an old song she had written many years ago and sang it to the children on the streets. She smiled remembering them.

She blushed deeply. "I feel fine."

“Althea.” Samuel said.

"Ill rest for your sake," she kissed him gently on the lips singing softly to him.

He put his arms around her and smiled to her song. He kissed her and then clapped when she was done before putting his arms back around her.
“Sweetie. In the battle against the Spartans, I broke 6 ribs. I refused to rest and almost died without even fighting in another battle. I had a few minor squirmishes but no real all out battle.” He said smiling.

He released his hug and looked into her eyes.
“I understand your spirit now understand that you have to rest. Respect your body.” He said and kissed her forehead.

Amshe smiled looking into his eyes. "You are one of the kindest bravest people I have ever met. Im happy with you. So be careful when you go to battle. I know you're leading the battle bit I'm serious. They're trying to kill you specifically." she warned him. "And from what I've heard of your brother, he'll probably to take everything you have away from you. I'm just... Worried."

Althea smiled looking into his eyes.
"You are one of the kindest bravest people I have ever met. I’m happy with you. So be careful when you go to battle. I know you're leading the battle but I'm serious. They're trying to kill you specifically." she warned him. "And from what I've heard of your brother, he'll probably to take everything you have away from you. I'm just... Worried."

“Yes my father chose me over my older brother. Solomon was more interested in becoming a diplomat than learning the art of war. My father knew that wars were not over much less how can a leader send men to die that hasn’t tasted battle much less death himself.” He stated referring to his brother, Solomon 25 years old.

“My brother also enjoys the fruits of royalty while people starve on the streets. I know this is wrong…I am not as much a conqueror as a liberator. I wish to take care of those that I call my people.” He stated standing up.

“I love you Althea but I will vow I will lay down my life before I surrender and allow the lords to use my brother as a puppet with strings and manipulate to keep the people hungry and without clothing or a roof over their heads.” He says pounding his fist into a table.

“My father was a selfish man most of his reign but his last 5 years he talked to me a lot about his mistakes and tried to make resolutions for his people. He was assassinated by those that were there to help him govern. I brought them to justice and had them executed…it saddens my heart to think that man’s nature is to be cruel and selfish. To think if given the chance man would let his neighbor starve including his neighbor’s children. Why would the gods allow this?” Samuel asks not expecting an answer.

Althea took his face in her hands. "Listen. This is why I love you. Why I care so much about you. I have seen children starve on the streets because the lords can't spare some bread. I tried to help them but I was barely able to buy one child a loaf. A child was whipped for taking food from a man who would have thrown it away. You are changing that."

She stood taking his hands. "I would die before I se that happen again. That is why I want you to be careful. I love you and these people need you alive. If not... You're brother will get power and I have seen what happens when our rulers are corrupted. Samuel promise me that you will be careful."

She looked straight up at him not blinking. "Please."
