Smallville: Redux

Rachel and Lana

"If Chloe's alive, and Bruce knows... I'll find out, and kick both their asses." Lana said, scowling, and trying to stiffle a yawn. "As for the townsfolk, they didn't notice shit when I was there earlier."

Her jaw cracking she tried to stiffle another yawn, blinking away exhaustion and stress she stood up. "I should go. Need to get back to my room."

NEW:

"Hey Lana.. you should drop by the Kents. Martha has been going through a rough patch since Karen and Clark went missing what with Jonathon in Hospital and such. She'd be glad to see another face other then mine." Rachel said softly as she followed Lana to the door.

New:

"No. I can't. Not yet. It would be, complicated. At best it would be complicated." Lana sighed. "Thank you though, for the offer." Walking out into the night she just kept an eye on her feet, making sure she didn't trip over herself. Or any rocks.

Rachel sighed and watched Lana leave. Complicated. Yeah that was Lana alright. Turning she dashes through her house and cleaned up and then heading back out to patrol. Maybe she'd run into Oliver. She needed her dose of Green Arrow... and his kisses that made her want to shag him silly.

It was a calm night, not a cloud in the sky. Which was normal for outer space, that is except for the fact that there seemed to be a thunderstorm going on. Even more interesting was that there were multiple flashes of lightning simultaneously. And not just 1 or 2, or even 3 or 5. But dozens all around the area, and with every flash they were coming closer and closer to each other. Until they finally merged at a single point causing an explosion of light.

A pentagon of light formed and from it an object shot out. The object was hurtled towards the Earth and upon hitting the atmosphere became a ball of flame streaking across the night sky of the United States.

And at the same time the same string of events occured in the Kawatche caves. The lightning closing in, the formation of the Pentagon, but this time the object had a much shorter trip. The figure crashed into the far wall in a cloud of dust and stone chips, leaving the one un marked part of the cave with a new "dent".

As the dust settled the young blonde girl began to rise. She patted the dust off her less than immaculate clothing and said to herself or anyone else for that matter, "Ow. You okay Clark?"

Karen Kent looked around and realized where she was. "Oh man," she said, "Not this place again." She remembered the last time she'd seen this place. Her adopted dad, Jonathan Kent, Being choked out, Real dad Jor black mailing Clark and her into doing what he wanted them to.

"Reborn huh?" she said, "Looks like the same old dance to me." Then her brow closed up into a very unusual frown then her face fell into a shocked expression.

"Dad!" she yelled as her body took over. There was a blur and the girl was on the move. The second she hit open air outside of the cave she was airbourne and moving at speed towards home. "Nononono. Oh god oh god, Daddy please be okay."

As she hurtled towards the farm she saw the fireball coming in and impacting. Then she saw the truck arrive and the flames die down. There was a ditch in the corn field some 10 feet wide, and 50 ft long. The corn on either side for an additional 10 ft had been burned. She was still a distance off as she watched her mother get out of the truck and followed the furrow to the end. Martha gasped and then jumped down, not caring that she could be burned, much less that she’d get dirty. Some 10 feet down was the naked body of her son, Clark Kent. “Oh my God. My boy…” she said as she got to him and cradled the unconscious teenager.

Kara touched down a short distance from her Mother and brother. She rushed towards the two saying "Mom? Are Clark and dad okay?"

Looking for destiny one town at a time

One would think that when you do not have the biological need to eat or sleep you could drive across the country in a little over a day, day and a half max. Thats unless your a photographer and you get distracted by every little small town, lemonade stand, and interesting rock formation you run across. I was on night five of my trek from L.A. to Metropolis, and was in the middle of Kansas now, maybe halfway to my destination.

Seether was playing one of my favorite songs as the blacktop spooled out under my tires. I was kinda in this zen state. All around me was cornfields, with the occasional farmhouse or piece of ancient farm equipment. If it was daytime I may have gotten a few shots, but it would just take too long to set up my lighting rig, and none of them were right for night shots. All this flew through my mind as the miles rolled by. The playlist spooled up Breaking Benjamin's "The Diary of Jane" and I reached down to turn it up.

Two things happened then. Call it fate making her move, Destiny sending me a wake up call, or God putting a damn whoopie cushion under my chair. Either way the outcome was the same. I looked up and notices a streaking ball of fire going over the hill ahead of me, then I noticed the damn orange cat in the middle of the road.

I said some choice words that would have gotten me the strap from my uber-religious foster family (thank God I had only been there a few months!) and jerked the wheel hard to the right. The cat went bounding across the road, and my tire rolled off the blacktop and blew. I fought the wheel, then lost as the car went off the road and slammed into a tree with a sickening crunch.

I looked over to see the damn cat sauntering into the cornfield, tail held high in that one eye salute cats give and then the damn thing disappeared.

Well shit. This was just perfect.

I got out and surveyed the damage. Tire was blown, front end smashed. Steam and fluid was leaking under my car. It was not totaled (I hope), but it sure as hell wasn't being driven anywhere.

I checked my gear to make sure it was all good, and the hard cases had done their jobs. Everything was fine. Good thing to. I had about ten K in the bank after buying the car and gear. Starting over would have been expensive.

I pulled my all purpose bag out and opened it, checking the batteries on the camera and if I had plenty of card space on the CF cards. Then I let loose the walls and Shadow filled me with power.

Can I describe it when I throw of the flesh of man and transform myself into that which is both man and demigod? I can try. It is like a river of cold fire sweeping through me. My every cell is energized, my senses sharper, my skin filled with power. Colors subtly change as my eyes switch to a spectrum beyond human calculation. Everything is the same, and so much different.

I don't know where my clothes and bag went (don't really care. When I switch back they are there in the same condition I left them.) but I was glad the bag wasn't restraining me. I picked a spot ahead and shadowstepped there, emerging from the base of a corn silo about a mile ahead. I ported to the top and looked over at where that light had went. I wasn't going to make any more miles tonight so I might as well satisfy my curiosity.

There was a light over the next hill, so I moved in steps from shadow to shadow until I was perched atop a old barn on the edge of a field. About a quarter of a mile ahead I could see the furrow and crater left by what appeared to be a impact of something. Down below were three figures, two female (and clothed), one male (not clothed and apparently unconscious).

If he needed medical help I could get him to a hospital, but the only one I knew well enough to long-range shadowport to was in L.A., and I don't think the women there would appreciate that.

Besides, popping up like this would most likely freak them both out. I looked like , well, a demon or something. I had actually had people pick up a perps gun and shoot me after I rescued them. Thats big city gratitude for you!

I crouched atop the barn like a midevil gargoyle and watched. If I needed to I could step in, but right now I wanted to wait and see.

Besides, after they left I wanted a closer look at what caused all this damage. It looked fascinating!

Oliver had just returned into to town and and smiled as he got into his green arrow costume, and headed to the to his usual meeting place that he and Rachel had decided to meet if they didn't meet on the street.

He quickly added the last of his costume and shot then shot his crossbow across to a nearby rooftop and slid on the roof noiselessly and did this several times until he reached his final destination and looked around for Raven while listening to the police scanner in his ear

Kara touched down a short distance from her Mother and brother. She rushed towards the two saying "Mom? Are Clark and dad okay?"

Martha was in even more shock then she was before. She reached up and pulled Karen to her and hugged her tightly, at least as tightly as she could, and wept. For the first time in months she had her children together and all the emotions she had bottled up inside just came rushing out. "We need to get your brother inside. He doesn't look hurt, but looks like he had a rough fall." she told Karen.

FYI: Clark has been sleeping in a remodeled loft in th barn for about 2 years now.

For the first time in months she had her children together and all the emotions she had bottled up inside just came rushing out. "We need to get your brother inside. He doesn't look hurt, but looks like he had a rough fall." she told Karen.

It felt so good to feel mom holding her. This had been one of the greatest comforts Karen had in life. Loving parents that were firm and fair. A mother who always was there to hear her troubles. A father to be strong and protective of his "little angel". She broke the hug, even though she really didn't want to. "Okay mom, let me get Clark to his loft." She lifted her twin in her arms and was off as fast as she could run.

She also took the time (all two seconds of it.) to give Clark his modesty back, the worst two seconds of her life having to see her brother naked, then she bolted back to mom and swept her up in the same cradle she held Clark in and had her to the loft. Martha had barely had time to gasp in surprise. And Karen was off again to get the truck. Martha said to the empty air "Thank you Karen." She turned and sat on the side of Clark's bed looking down at her son.

As Karen got back to the truck she was facing the barn and spotted a figure on the roof. "Oh crap", she thought to herself. Out loud she said "Isn't it rude to trespass and play peeping Tom at this time of night?"

"I thought I was the one who could never make things easy."

A deep sigh and the dark haired woman pushed back from the desk, flipping off the static filled computer monitor as she did. Chloe Sullivan had been missing, presumed dead now for nearly three months. Something didn't add up about it though, that discord was what brought the woman to this office.

Lois Lane was unable to let things go, it was just not in her nature. Especially when those things involved the sudden and mysterious death of her cousin and close friend. Even pulling military strings she'd only been able to learn so much, and that was not normal. It had taken her months to track down the story until she finally ran out of patience and decided to do some digging herself.

First stop, Chloe's home town. Lois knew her blond cousin's obsession with the meteor laden town and it's local legends. Even though her childhood had been spent following her father around from base to base, Lois had spent some happy times with the Sullivan's and had a sneak peak of what normal life was like. In her younger years it had been Rockwellian, now it was just another farm town in nowheresville, a.k.a. Smallville Kansas.

It was in Smallville that Chloe had met Clark Kent, her oft spoken of best friend and eternal crush. Lois had never really paid attention about him before, but if Chloe trusted him to help find out the truth behind whatever happened that night, then Lois would too. Well, at least she'd track his ass down and make him do some explaining.

That had been twenty minutes ago and now she found herself driving down a dirt road, ready to scream.
"K-E-N-T, Kent. It's a farm. Do they even have addresses?"

She rolled her eyes, already sick of the fresh air and open spaces. Everywhere she looked it was green fields, corn probably. But what did she know about that? Next to nothing, hell all she knew about corn was where the button on the microwave was to pop it.

Now she was driving through the middle of all this nothing and being told that the operator couldn't give her directions. "Mm-mm-mm. Look, the last super genius I had on the line told me to turn right on Route 31. Now I'm totally lost..... What's outside? Oh, about a billion stalks of corn."

A low growl of frustration rolled from her throat as she used sheer forced of will to not bash her head against the steering wheel. Lois took a deep breath to collect herself, ready to try her attack from another side, maybe she could outflank her with a new barrage of questions.

Lightning split the sky, white light forked down ripping through the air with a sizzle of ions and electricity. The fork struck ground, making Lois jerk and scream. The cell phone went dead, hissing dully in her ear. "That's just great."

Frustration was mounting and Lois' wide blue eyes darted upward, picking out the thin white cylinder that was pressed against the visor and the roof of the car. "If you smoke that, you'll hate yourself for the rest of the night. Come on Lane, man up."

Grumbling to herself she looked away for a moment, long enough to search her purse for gum or something else to distract her from the temptation of smoking. She'd just quit..again. This time she was going to stay quit. Almost as soon as she looked away another bolt of lightening ripped open the sky, this time hitting the road in front of her.

"SHIT!" Quick reflexes let her wrench the wheel to the left, avoiding the smoke and sparks that erupted in the wake of the bolt. She turned right, swerving out of the correction only to fishtale on loose gravel on the side of the road. Down through the ditch and into a cornfield the suv drove on until Lois could bring it to a stop.

The dark sky blazed brightly in a blur of activity, Lois threw herself down across the seats as something brilliantly white sailed entirely too close overhead. All around her seemed to be bathed in light and heat, a brief flash of thought crossed her mind..was this what Chloe felt when her house exploded?

The concussive wave of the explosion sent things dark, for a minute, for twenty who knew? When Lois dragged herself upright the flames were dying down in the corn. A wide area had been laid flat with some sort of impact mark in the center. Nothing was there now but something had been. Tire tracks leading in and out of the field meant someone had come and gone while she was out.

"Well, that's some kind of lead, and if they live around here they must know the Kent's." So with no cell signal to be had Lois followed the one lead she did have. The tire tracks from the field, lead down along the road, who ever had been driving was driving fast and reckless enough to leave a clear trail. What could have them driving like this?

Lois didn't have long to wonder as she came upon an arching entryway to a large farmhouse and out buildings. A large barn stood off to one side, pasture and fields on all other sides. She slowed alongside the mailbox, angling her headlights to read the name Kent. "Well, what do you know?"

Gravel crunched under her tires as Lois rolled up to a stop in the drive. She hopped from her car and strode to the porch, old wood creaked under foot with a sort of expected quaint charm. Knuckles fell to the door, knocking before finding their way deep into her front pockets. Nothing to do now but wait.

Sliding from the shadows she created, Rachel slid her arms around Green Arrow from behind. "Hi Leather boy" she taunted in his ear. Smiling she pulled her arms back before his instincts could take over and she found herself tasting roof top. Standing there she smiled faintly at her friend.

He then walked up to her and wrapped his arms around and hugged her "Hows Martha doing?"

Leaning into Oliver, Rachel closed her eyes briefly. "As well as she can be I guess" She said softly. "No change in Jonathon yet, they keep talking about taking him off life support..if they keep it up Oliver I don't know how she will handle it"She inhaled the scent of his outfit and smiled faintly. Something about this man made her feel like nothing could touch her.

I didn't realize the moon had risen behind me until the girl saw me and spoke. At that point I had numerous things I could do. I could run, I could drop her in darkness and hide somewhere else and keep observing.

Or I could do what I did, which was to shadowstep into the corn behind here. I knew she saw me melt away into mist, and I knew she would hear the slight graveyard moan of me emerging into the corn.

"Don't be afraid, I won't harm you. Your the first person I have seen who is like me. Who is special. I only want to talk, and help if I can and if you let me."

I knew my voice was scary, as was my appearance. Hopefully this young woman could look beyond the appearances.

Karen heard this dude/thing/whatever's first foot fall in the corn field behind her. He got to give her the excuse to not kick the flat out crap out of him, but that didn't mean he got a complete pass. Besides dark spooky guys are kind of hot. Hot enough for her to trigger the burn. She turned as he finished his speech, her eyes glowing red with a heat haze around them.

"Look buddy, I've had a very very rough patch lately, and someone doing hoodoo voodoo isn't my idea of friendly behavior. So either, get less aggro, or we dance." A lot of bluff in this, but also an almost itch to cut loose. Karen wasn't the sibling to go to for puzzles or harder thinking, she was all action. And her life had been turned inside out this last however long it had been since Bio dad had messed with Clark and her.

Let this dude make just one mistake. One mistake and he got to learn what double K was gonna cook.

OK, she was spooked. And pissed. And weren't her eyes blue?

"I am going to step out into the moonlight now. I am not here to fight, but I tend to provoke a strong reaction when people see me," I chuckled. "Hell, I have had people I rescued from muggers pick up the gun and shoot me before. I'm not going to hurt you."

I stepped out into the moonlight, hands at my side and let her clearly see me for the first time.

I admit it, I look like a walking nightmare. My body is a black organic armor thats like a second skin, with ridges and clefts and spines on the bottom of my forearms and my shoulders. My head is a helmet crowned by horns, not too unlike the mask Sauron wears in the Lord of the Rings movie, and my eyes glow faintly lavender. My fingers end in faint claws, and when I want they sharpen into blades that can cut steel.

I wasn't winning any best dressed contests.

Lets see what she does. Either it will be painful, loud, or even more interesting..

Peaceful.

He chuckled and said "Annoyance huh? Whats that say for you 'popping' in and out all the time, besides you can always quit hanging around me if I'm such an annoyance, or I can go find another rooftop somewhere."

Raven smirked. "The bat would crush you like a bug. You know how surly he gets... and of late.. he hasn't been around..." she sighed. "But your annoyance beside, I am glad you're back Oliver" she whispered standing on tip toe and pressing her lips to his ear so he could hear her. "Now, are we going to patrol or are we going to flirt some more and you can try to get me all hot and bothered." It was a game they played, one that got more and more heated and closer to Rachel caving in on the sex part the longer and more often they played it. One day.. soon, she was going to cave and spend more then just time kissing Oliver.

He loved the games they played and also knew she saw right through his false bravado and then touned the earpiece as he scanned the dfrequencies for anything dealing with criminal activity.

"Lets see a break in at a house cops already have suspect in custody, a little old lady that complaining about the voices upstairs in her apartment building, AH now this sounds like soemthing we might be able to help with a bunch of thugs ripping off a jewelry store and the cops are on the other side of town dealing with the house break in."

A soft chuckle was Raven's reply as she stepped into the portal. Almost instantaneously she stepped out the other side and studied the scene. He wanted someone to interrogate. Fine. She felt her lips curve as she waved her hands at the thugs in the store. Suddenly they were all flattened to the floor face up and their clothes were stuck to the floor like.. they had been melted there. Raven stepped in, hood far down over her face. "Hmm nice idea, wrong town." She said calmly.

the 4 Thugs stared at her in horror.

She didn't say anything else. Just waited.

"How stupid are you guys your lucky it wasn't batman that found you, you'd be allot worse off than just stuck to the ceiling, but since you're up there We do have a couple of questions for you.

Or perhaps we could play William Tell and place the bags of jewels around their torso and see if that jogs their memories, I have this cool new arrow I invented with a saw blade that pops out maybe I should use it see if the bugs are worked out of it properly."
