So... Anyone ever grow a pineapple?

The pineapple in the pot... is still in the pot. Amazing I know. I was rather shocked myself that it did not leap out, do a cartwheel and replant itself. Such is the nature of plants. Not the most action packed, but a nice sense of continuity nonetheless.

Lil Sis is getting more roots. She's got a quite a few more out this week.

And no, for the sharp eyed among you, that is not your imagination. That is yet another pineapple behind Lil Sis. I was gifted a pineapple. It appears as if pineapples do indeed come in threes.

So I have three pineapples now and I decided they should have names. Three sisters - Marsha, Jan and Cindy. Of course Marsha is the eldest and in the pot.

Her roots are snug in and she resists pulling now.

Jan is picking up steam. She's got roots coming out all over the place now.

And here comes little Cindy. She's just into the water for a week so really hasn't had a chance to do much but if you look closely you can see the root starts.

I'm even getting new growth on my caladium. This was the first one to sprout and has done very well. I think I might like to get more of this variety next year.

I'd call them Larry Moe and Curly but I already have 3 kittens with those names. With the 4 mouseketeers coming along right behind them.

I do like the pineapple update though. Much better than the usual GB traffic.

You going to bring them inside the house during the wintertime?

Well they started out as sisters - don't want to confuse them by forcing a gender re-orientation upon them ;)

I don't think I need to bring them inside. One of the guys that used to work at my old company grew them in the soil in his yard. I've already tentatively picked a spot where they will live when it comes time to give them a permanent home. And really, we haven't had a true frost here for a good half dozen years. Or more. I did have to cover my sunpatiens when it got to just below 40 a time or two - but they are much more tender and fickle.

If it looks like it will get chilly I'll just throw a blanket over them.

loving all the updates on your pineapple siblings - marsha's doing really well with shiny new leaves and the others are coming on fine. take enough pics of them once planted and you could do a time-frame slide show kinda thing... you know what i mean, and watch them grow before your eyes!

I figure it's a week by week thing - give or take. I'll be curious to see just how long it takes to get a pineapple.

Jan will be planted in the next few weeks. And Cindy's roots are coming along. I'm not sure how long they'll hang out in the pot before they land in their permanent home. I'll figure it out. :D

Interesting how far it's come along. What's the end result for Jan? A mini-tree?

Another week in to the pineapple saga.

Marsha is coming along. She's more solidly rooted now and I believe this is new growth I am seeing.

Jan is continuing to root. I figure I may be able to plant her in another week or two and then she can go outside and join Marsha.

Cindy is getting more prominent root nodes, buds? Whatever. She's coming along. She should be getting her first root soon.

The caladium are doing very well. I'm tickled pink with them. Or maybe that's red...

She is the last and the slowest of all the caladium I planted this year. She's got another leaf coming also. :)

And last but not least, the big daddy of them all - he was the first to come up and has done beautifully. When I go to the plant show next year, I think I'll pick up a couple more of him.

i think what you're doing might encourage quicker root growth, but this article she dries the stumps out a bit then plants them

  • take a top from a store bought pineapple
  • remove any fruit flesh
  • remove a few of the bottom leaves – you can see some tiny root tips forming there
  • leave it for a couple of days so the stump dries out (and therefore doesn’t rot in the ground)
  • plant it in the garden or in a large pot
  • when your pineapple ripens, harvest it, chop the top off and replant – the cycle continues

I think that's the method that one of the guys I used to work with used. He had a pineapple patch in his yard. He's the one that gave me the pineapples for the upside down pineapple cake.

That was very good. In another year and a half to two, I'll make it again. :D

Not for a bit. I think the pot might be a little too small just yet.
