So... Anyone ever grow a pineapple?

Beautiful. I wish I'd taken more pics when I loved in Florida.
We've a lot of pink skies here in NC lately.

My pineapple is not happy with being inside now.

In the pacific northwest it's far less active in the sky. I had no idea when I was moving to Florida that I'd be getting such sky views. I particularly love watching the clouds move and change shapes.

We've had some very pretty, very pink sunsets here too lately.

Mine is in a can.

People just need to learn to look up to see what images the sky can treat then to.

Senator Lisa took this photo today at 4pm, 5 minutes prior to official sunset.

You have lovely plants and flowers, Adrina. You should rename the thread to "Adrina's Beautiful Gardens, a.k.a. Aren't You All Jealous?" ;)

Oh, and it's great to see the two pineapple plants flourishing (so far, anyway). If I lived in Florida, I'd definitely be growing them. Pineapple is one of my favorite fruits.

Thank you. :)

I saw some pineapples at Lowes today. Small fruits on them, but they were fruiting pineapple plants. They were kinda cute.

The picture window bed....

Holy cow. This was a project. Prior to this, the bed had a palm tree that had volunteered and been allowed to grow. I had the palm cut down a few years ago ahead of a big storm. It was too close to the house and I wasn't comfortable with it being there. However after it was cut, the stump was left. It hung out until October 2018 when I had it ground out to make it easier for the windows to be installed. And for the bed to be worked once the windows were in.

I was out there until just a bit after dark last night laying the last of the border pieces in.

The planting waits until next weekend. Along with the irrigation and white marble chips.

Dwarf variegated ginger, various caladium, a new orange thing I haven't memorized the name of yet, asparagus fern and some annual color spots - red impatiens.

Sumbuddy has tiny feetsies.

My feetsies. I never thought of size 9 as tiny.

That was me testing to make sure that I had even soil density. A lot of soil was moved and sifted through - a lot of freakin' rocks.

My hands are nearly as large as your feetsies.

What did you do with the rocks?

I tried washing a few - I used them for my paperwhites. But they never really came "clean". So I am just throwing them away. A shame but it's not like they can be reused.

Some of the rocks:

That's a five gallon bucket and those are all 3+ gallon planting containers. F'g rocks.

There's still a ton in the bed and I've already thrown away an amount equal or greater to than what is in that white bucket. Using rocks for a bed border. Someone had rocks in their head. Ha.

The thing is done. This was probably the most argumentative bed I have installed on this property. My rose bed came with less hassle and I've redone that sucker three times total - and will have a fourth when I go to install the border. But that's another post. Between the rocks, the palm roots and the golden rain tree roots this bed fought me every step of the way.

So first, I dug through the way back pics. I apologize for the blurriness. I was trying to get a pic of Kitty Girl scratching on the stump. She moved. However this gives an idea of what this bed has looked like for a few years. The palm was cut down in about 2016 and the trunk removed and ground in 2018. I had some of the dwarf gingers and the fern in there. When I had new windows installed, I had the trunk removed and took all the plantings out. They had been hanging out with the pineapples waiting for the bed to be remade.

The new philodendron, "prince of orange" I believe. It's supposed to get about 3 feet by 3 feet.

I finally made a commitment to some foundation plantings. I've tried all sorts of thing in the front west bed but it's not an easy area. I had the coleus there for fall until I could figure out something.

So I was at home depot last week and I saw a nice boring glossy evergreen shrub. Behold, the mighty 'green island' ficus. Destined to get about four feet tall. If it doesn't work then I have a shovel. Apparently they are used more in South Florida but they are good to 30 F. Last time we were down in the 30s for any amount of time was shortly after I moved down here over ten years ago.

I got two of them - one to frame each side of the window. And some wax begonias to go around them for color. Never planted them before - I'll see how it goes.
