Star Wars Day

Seriously, I did not mind the updated effects of the original three movies. Adding extra creatures for background and more elaborate explosions was fine with me. It is when they fuck around with the actual storytelling such as the cantina scene. At the end of Return of the Jedi, Lucas replaced the original older Anakin whose spirit stood next to Obi-Wan and Yoda with Hayden Christiansen. Lame.

I will give credit to Lucas for eventually feeling the pulse of the public. The universally despised character from Phantom Menace who shall go nameless here was reduced in each following film. In Revenge of the Sith, said character was merely background material. Too bad Lucas does not go back and edit out that particular character.

Also, Anakin was way, way too young in the first film. Argh! I could go on forever.

After seeing the first movie -- during which time I was so bored by the endless "Look, I can replicate war droids endlessly ain't it cool" scene that I went to sleep -- I dreamed that I ran into George Lucas at some cafateria restaraunt. I cornered him and began lambasting him for the crappy character development, the wooden stick dialog, and assorted other idiocy. He ran to get Steven Spielberg to defend him.

I have seen only snippets of the other two, and then only when forced. The husband insisted we own them, but as far as I know they'v never come out of the cases.

I watched my original set of VHS so many times they are worn. We've watched the second set almost that much, and even the original 3 on DVD have rocked us to sleep more than once. I would't say I HATE the movies. But my disillusionment has grown so much over the last few years that I've actually started giving my Star Wars collectibles to more Star Wars Geek Dedicated friends -- all the trading cards and an old cast Chewbacca necklace charm are gone. Eventually the 12 inch dolls will go away.

But I'm keeping my books and T-shirts, because the original movies, in their original form, still strike me as good. I wish he'd never messed with them, really, better special effects or not.

I expect one day, after Lucas is gone and his grip is loosened, some deepdyed fanboy grown up to be a Hollywood somebody is gonna remake the whole slate of the story "the way it should be".
