Every story I post gets 1 star’d

Asking if I'm joining a circus is YOU being polite?

I'm rolling my eyes again.
After you claimed that you were rolling your eyes enough to see your arse. If my response was not polite, then yours was not either.

My advice is to stop digging.

As you've probably gathered, I'm not a candidate for your "advice".

We went through all this over YOUR feelings about small excerpts from two unknown stories, from unknown authors, that were being critiqued by many of the commenters here.

You had a problem with it.

I fired the first shot, you fired back, then immediately claimed you were nothing but polite.

I wonder if those demanding that our conversation end will be so receptive to the same demands, next time they're trying to make their point?

There's a whole bunch of "not polite" in the AH these days, and it's not because of me.

Hey,

I’ve been you many times. Not picking sides, just saying time to step away ☮️.

Your choice.

No, I had a different opinion, and I accepted that others would see it differently.

I fired the first shot, you fired back, then immediately claimed you were nothing but polite.
Because I was. Which of us has three times told the other to 'fuck off'?

There's a whole bunch of "not polite" in the AH these days, and it's not because of me.
Because? No. Contributing? Yes.

And good for him.

What we don't know is how many artists said 'no'. There must be some, and I respect their choice, and his following their preference.
Lady Gaga and Coolio, and allegedly Paul McCartney. Both Gaga and Coolio blamed it on their management, and Gaga I think made a pretty big deal out of saying she'd be honored. The story on McCartney was that he didn't like the parody being called "Chicken Pot Pie" for reasons of being-vegan.

Nirvana, Madonna and Michael Jackson all put conditions on. There's a story attributed to both Madonna and Nirvana, saying they said they'd allow it as long as the song wasn't about food. Michael Jackson's only condition was that the parody wasn't of "Black or White", which he felt was too personal.

OK. Did Weird Al disrespect their wishes?

I got the Coolio story wrong, actually; Coolio's label gave him permission but Coolio himself did not, and complained when the song was released. Later, he said he'd been stupid and that he wished his managers had told him, you know, Michael Jackson and Prince are getting these parodies, you should shut up.

So... yes, kind of.

My memory may not be trustworthy, but I recall an interview in which Weird Al said he did notify the artists of works he'd like to parody. He mentioned one who turned him down flat, and as a result he didn't follow up on that artist's work.

Probably won't be long, I reported him/her at the first 'fuck off'.
Mine is about the fourth " fuck off" I've seen in AH in the past week or so.
If I go down for it, I'll be pointing to those others who have said the same.

Spoiler, some of them are your friends.

Also worth noting that Weird Al's label pays royalties to the rights-holder of the parodied music, so there's a whole financial and legal element there.

That's actually complete malarkey.
No, it's not. I went down the rabbit hole of fair use for parody songs after I wrote an alternate version of "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year." A lot of people throw out "Fair Use" like it's a blank check for appropriating others work, but it's not nearly as all-encompassing as most claim.

His usage is so obviously fair use that it's an open and shut case and the copyright holder would likely have to pay legal fees.
Nope. In fact, I found several sites that use him as an example when discussing fair use claims regarding parodies. They all agreed he was smart to get permission because it wouldn't be an open and shut case, even on the songs that legitimately parodied the original song rather than just mimicking it.

@SimonDoom may know how realistic I am there.
Good for him, I guess, but irrelevant in a discussion with me.

And he has very deep pockets to defend himself if needed.
Deep pockets get shallow fast when you don't protect yourself.

He has repeatedly said in interviews that he does it out of curtesy, even though he is not legally required to do so.
Yeah, I'm sure he wasn't coached on how to put a positive spin on things.

Why is there so much push back against being courteous. I don't get it. Be a nice person when you can.
I don't see a pushback against legitimate courtesy. I see a pushback against an unreasonable demand.
