Vera's racing heart settled as Jase looked at her. There was no anger there, no repulsion or hatred. She didn't know what he was thinking for sure, but his admission that he had imagined having children with her gave her hope.
Vera turned, about to leave through the door in the room that led to the small dressing chamber, but she stopped. She put her hand under his chin, raising his head up and looking into his eyes. She gave him a soft, lingering kiss before she left the room to get dressed.

In the last week Vera had eschewed her normally body conforming dresses and jumpsuits. Instead, to hide her blossoming body, she had gone for outfits with a bit more room in them, ones she could grow into over the months to ocme without garnering too much suspicion. The one she wore now was a deep red, it didn't go as well with her current brown hair (a left over from her time as Avery), but she didn't mind. She hadn't wanted to change her hair back to black yet, wanting Jase to wake up and get used to her true identity before she did.
As Vera dressed she got her AI to hand over orders for Jase to be shown to their rooms, to be made comfortable in there. She had no doubt she would like it. Each wall of the five room suite was made entirely of phasing transluscent panels. A simple swipe and they would get an unobstructed view of space, or whatever planet they were landing on, though no one could see in. Her waiting room was the first one that a person would enter, it held several comfortable lounges and a table console and the walls were adorned by stunning pictures of a dozen of the planets under PEACE's council. Her private study was next, a large old style desk of timber and leather with a tiny bookcase beside it, the only paper books were ones on the history of Laverne, but there were several data packs in there as well . Behind the study was a private dining room, full of opulent luxury in the settings and lighting, with a round table large enough for six diners.
Her bedroom followed the study. It was largely dominated by a huge bed that was the most comfortable thing in the universe. Apart from a small table on either side of the bed the room housed only a chaise lounge by the windows. The rest of the storage was hidden in panels in the walls. She also had a bathroom with a wide, deep bath big enough for four people and a seperate room for the toilet and vanity.

The council had been kept waiting for half an hour by the time she arrived. Vera apologised as she entered the conference room and looked up to see her uncle waiting on the holoscreen.
"First you get someone to do your duty and now you keep us waiting when you call a meeting," he chided. Vera ignored the jibe and took a seat at the head of the table.
"Where is Avery?" Vera asked, cutting straight to the point. She looked at the bastard who had betrayed her and refused to let him see her anger.
"Avery? That imposter? She had been thrown in our brig." Nicholas Starborn announced. "She must be more than just a placeholder if you want her back."
"May I direct your attention to the minority of my fleet that you have commandeered?" Vera said, not wanting to push for Avery and get her into more trouble.
"I'll think you'll find they came with us willing."
"So they willingly deserted their assigned posts and committed treason?" Vera snapped.
"In the same manner you abandoned your post to an imposter and flew about the universe with some jumped up smuggler criminal."
Vera bristled at the jab at Jase, but she pushed her feelings aside.
"I was following some leads on an important item we needed to recover. I did, and while there also discovered-"
"Some giant scary interdimensional monsters under your bed. Yes, we know. We don't believe you and we don't care."
And so it went. Vera tried and failed to get her people to see reason. She wasn't ready yet to expose Starspeaker, so she didn't bring him into the conversation or mention him in any way. He was potentially the only advantage they would have in this war.
In the end little progress was made. The only victory was getting her uncle, in his arrogance, to admit that he had falsified Avery's orders and ordered a massacre in Magaroth instead. That made Vera wonder what else the bastard had done. She set someone to investigate it.
The meeting went late into the evening and by the time it was done Vera was completely exhausted. she cancelled her night meeting with the fleet commander, saying she would inspect the new space craft in the morning.
Normally, after finishing work, Vera would visit Jase's room and sit with him, holding his hand as she talked to him, Samantha glaring at her from the corner of the room with her arms crossed.
Tonight, though, he would be waiting in her quarters. Their quarters. Despite the hunger growling in her stomach and the nausea rising in her throat, she had a spring in the step of her tired body. She entered their room, looking around and hoping to find him there.
"Jase?" She called out. She was nervous about resuming their earlier discussion, the bags under her eyes had grown darker with the stress of the meeting. Really, all she wanted to do was curl up into bed and be held by Jase, but she knew they would have a bit of talking to do before that.
