Is it really doing that though, or is it being hyped up as "artificial intelligence" by marketeers, media, people who want to sell you something? What I love about AI is how much it's challenging us to think about what it means to be human.
It's a genuine question, since I don't have a clue how the AI tools we're seeing at the moment actually work. I can see that a very large part of it is predictive - algorithmic, to use @Bramblethorn's word (that is, what's the next most likely word or image, based on all the words of images that have been fed into a data base), but what's the basis of your comment, "challenging us to think about what it means to be human."
So far, I've seen nothing remotely human or truly creative in AI generated content. I do see a truck load of fast mimicry, but nothing gives me any sense of incipient "self awareness" within the machine. What have I missed (or am I being too cynical about hype)?
