Comments:

you have a prime suspect, that's great. i bet you don't even get their sex right.

i hope you have more than one, since i've written just one of the comments that you posted.

umm, this is going to be laughable

If you're trying to intimate it's me you're both full of shit.

What you see is what you get. I have no problem in facing down people. You get email from me it comes WITH my email address and my ID.

I would never intimate you. You have my word.

1) , just a lot of smoke and mirrors to draw attention away. Focus on the subject, the story. Be critical of yourself, like anyone who really wants to improve does, and stop trying to muddy the conversation with distractions and sideshow antics.

Back at ya!

Why don't you clear your brain and go read Transplant. My Valentines effort, 4 pages 4.28 rating and just under 900 votes by the time the contest ended. Maybe like Rutger you can see a different person after. Or maybe not.

But fair warning; there be dragons lurking ;)

I won't have time to read that tonight, but I will absolutely get to it tomorrow. I'll probably make a different thread for it (or you can if you are so inclined)just because i try not to have threads going in too many directions.

I'm sorry, are we an experiment in social responsibility? A certain percentage of everyone has difficulty distinguishing fantasy from reality. It doesn't matter what it is. You'd never have all the conspiracy theories otherwise and all of them have their subscribers.

It astonishes me how many writers believe, or want to believe, that their stories have zero effect on the people who read them. The day I believe that is the day I stop writing.

if we're going there, shut down all the newspapers, TVs, radios and the internet. Burn all the books. That way we shelter those who are challenged by reality.

*sigh*

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen a writer conflate criticism with censorship, I'd be able to retire very comfortably. It's a cheap strawman tactic. Do better.

Nobody in this forum is blocking you from posting tales about vengeful men killing cheating bitches who had it coming. But people have every right to criticise if they think what you're doing is harmful. If you want to write that kind of stuff without being criticised for it, your best best is to stay in the LW bubble, rather than coming to Story Feedback.

Erotica with a conscience? You'd better believe it. I wrote a story about a woman with paraplegia - the response I got from the PWD community was astonishing, thanking me for giving them an erotic voice.

The beauty of your story is not mere glamour; it lies in the vividness of the characters and the bravery and sensitivity that they bring to each other. Thank you for opening my eyes...

Gorgeous

I am a wheelchair user. You have a great sense of what it means. She is beautifully seen, strong and vulnerable. I have never thought to include my disability in my writing, but you inspire me to. I will write and post. Thank you.
If these affirmative comments are to go by, it follows, therefore, that if someone writes misogynistic hate (I'm not saying you have, not having read your story - but it doesn't sound very palatable) then yes, you will affect some readers. Thinking you don't is like saying a KKK rally is playing dress-ups in a sheet. It's not. Writers do need to be responsible, and it's not just "harmless fantasy." Erotica, by its nature, zeroes in on a core element of a person's makeup, their sexuality. You're not just stuffing about wrapping Christmas presents.

In some categories, I imagine, some content could be triggering for some people - I'm not saying we need to baby those people and protect them from content (if their triggers are that intense, what the fuck are they doing reading content that might trigger them?), but I am saying, if you're going to write about it, think about it and don't treat it flippantly. What you write matters. We're not going to change the world, but I think most of us have received a comment with heartfelt thanks for touching someone, somehow. I know I have - and that one person, matters. My writing affected them - that's worth thinking about, surely?

Well EB here's a few comments from mine. I edited the user names out and for brevity. Seeing as how you both seem intent on lecturing me without having read the story. There are a lot more like this and yes even some negative comments.

Edit: and some of those comments came from WOMEN and other well recognized authors here.

I cannot control what other people do. I can't stop people from liking or not liking what I do. I sleep well at night knowing that I tried. What I can control is where I participate.

I made this thread and shared the emails I got not to get a bunch of pats on the back, but because these people have valid opinions just like I do. I don't agree with them, and I think they're misguided, but I suspect they would say the same of me. I didn't editorialize them or offer any rebuttals because they pretty much stand on their own. Most people who read them either agree or disagree on the spot, and that's fine. I'm not here to be make friends.

I appreciate the responses from those that chimed in on my behalf, but it's really not necessary. I gave these opinions a platform because asking whether or not I go too far is a perfectly valid question. Everyone should ask this of themselves now and again and for those whom the answer is always no, they should consider going further.

I am here to offer my help to new authors, because that is who asks 90% of the time. Some of them don't take my advice and some of them do, but 100% of the time I am learning something new. I am practicing what I preach by exposing myself to new writing and evaluating what I think works and does not. Everyone who wants to learn about writing should learn to read critically. In the course of the feedback I've given, I've developed my own comprehensive writing theory, and I'm very proud when I get to apply it to my own art.

That being said, I don't have to help everyone. I try to get to every request, time permitting, but I'm under no obligation to do so.

Short story long, Gordo, cut it out. You are seeing attacks in criticism, and the two are not the same. Stop conflating them. I didn't not like Cheatify the Bitch. I didn't like it either, but I wasn't reading for enjoyment. I read it critically, which involves dissecting themes, pacing, paragraphs, sentences, and sometimes words. Yes, sometimes I enjoy work that I read critically and sometimes I don't, but this story didn't land on either scale. It is what it is.

You asked me to read Transplant, and I was happy to oblige, but your continued and beligerent defense of your writing has me questioning what purpose that would serve. It would take me about three hours to read a four page Lit story critically, and then another... two hours (maybe? Maybe more?) to write something up. Most of the time, a story this length would get about 1000 words from me in feedback. And what would I get for spending five additional hours trying to help you?

You have given no indication that you would be open to any kind of suggestion. Worse, now, you're going after other people.

You are not entitled to attention, and if you continue to behave like this you won't get it. Not from me, anyway. I'm not so egotistical to think that my opinion is all that important, but it is what it is. If you want to receive, you need to play nicer.

I'm not going to be sharing any more anonymous feedback either, so anyone else who wants to contribute will have to make an account (i know it costs a lot of money, but suck it up). I try to give eveyone a fair shot, and I try to let everyone have their say, but I'm done enabling the backbiting that this has devolved into.

Not sure what this is supposed to prove, though? Nobody was denying that there is an audience for this kind of thing on LW.

Not sure what bearing that has on the discussion, sorry.

(Is it actually a parody, though? What is it imitating? Some people seem to equate "parody" with "activate the criticism-free zone", but that ain't what it actually means.)

Food for thought there. You wrote a story about an app designed to torment and humiliate women, which ends up killing the first woman it's targeted at, and your fan's reaction is: yes, I wish I could do that to women.

Excerpting from some of the other comments on that story:

amazing. women aren't wired to feel actual guilt. just societal guilt.
unless she's got abnormally high testosterone.
she will freak out if society finds out, far more than her 'love'.
it's just hard-wired into their DNA. it's why women both give away nudes like candy, and cry bloody murder if they're leaked. both societal pressure.

We need this app! When is it coming out? A little public shaming might just slow down all the rampant cheating.

Cheating sluts are sub human. Glad she got terminated before she got germinated.

These are guys (yes, overwhelmingly guys) who hate women, believe women are hard-wired to be heartless bitches, and want women to suffer if not die for that. Men just like them beat and murder women every day. If you write for that crowd, you will always have a fan club in LW, but don't be surprised when somebody suggests that it might not be a harmless thing to do.

This recent one made me laugh. Pretty sure I know who sent it.

Someone called?

Interesting thread. MD, I've appreciated your help in the past, and certainly your time investment.

It should be recognised and appreciated that we have a small number of dedicated, generous people who give up their time to help new (and not so new) writers by giving them a second pair of eyes on their work, and their best attempts at helping the writer make their work better. Which is the nature of the request, if I understand the purpose of posting in 'Story feedback' correctly.

What I'm hearing though, in this thread, is that if I write a story about how #allwomen cheat on their husbands (as proven by the huge number of genuine women signed up to Ashley Madison) and deserve to die, I can finally achieve the numbers of votes and positive comments on my work that I'm currently so woefully lacking.

I'd write one, but I don't know where to start. If only there were an app for that.

Actually we're working on an app that can write faggoty cock sucking stories. Trouble is it keeps breaking down vomiting in disgust. As do all the programmers. Oh wait, perhaps you could give us some advice on that?

How DO you get past that moment that would make any NORMAL man puke his guts out?

Of course you reported that. Did you report HIS post above that started it? HMM?

He didn't go where you have gone. The question is whether this site is going to put up with blatant, nasty gay bashing or not. Is this a story site for straights only? What are the values of this Web site? We obviously know what your values are.

Don't represent my values at all. But someone takes a shot at me like he did, he'll get one right back. In the most vulnerable spot.

I have gay and lesbian friends and relatives. We raised one of my daughter's friends, a gay girl when her parents kicked her out because she was gay. Put her through high school with zero support from her parents.

He made an asshole comment so why are all of you letting him get away with it. Didn't see one of you suddenly concerned people telling him to stop it

Edit: and that was a PERSONAL shot he took.
