Cory was 25 and in his third year of teaching and coaching. In teaching age he was still young and in coaching years web younger. However, coaching football was Cory's calling at the age of 25 he was now the offense coordinator for one of the biggest football programs in all of Texas. This did not go unnoticed in the school or the town he lived in. To top it off he was good looking too. His tall frame and broad shoulders accented his short buzz cut and dark brown eyes. At 6'2 and 195lbs he was definitely in shape and intimidating to the boys and a dream for the girls.

Cory had been teaching Landscaping and horticulture at te school for three years now. So not only was he a football coach. He was in charge of keeping up all the athletic fields on this beautiful high school campus. Cory definitely had his hands full. His classroom was at the end of a hall way in the back of the hall where all the elective and trade classes were. As the first day was about begin Cory wondered who they had gotten to fill the classroom next to his and what they would be teaching. Early on the first day of school dressed in his khaki slacks and school logo polo shirt Cory entered the building. As he made his way to his classroom door he noticed the class next to his and the door opened. Cory peeked his head and saw no one there. Heading on his room he cut on the lights and cleaned off his desk. A few moments later he heard a crash in the room next to his like a bunch of books hitting the floor hopping to his feet and out the door Cory entered the room. "hello? Is everything ok in here?" he asked as he noticed the backroom closet door open.

Leah Gregory had look forward to her new teaching job all summer. Since her husband, Tom, had moved her to a new town in Texas from their home in Minnesota, their relationship had grown strained. She had married Tom Gregory right after graduating high school and they had supported each other through college. He was a successful accountant and she had followed a love of art to a teaching degree. What had been teenage love had cooled and sometimes it felt like they were living two separate lives.

She had gotten to the high school early that day. Her red hair was styled perfectly and she was wearing a modest dark green sun dress with a pair of black heels. At 24, she still felt young and pretty and liked to dress up on occasion. This was a big deal to her and she wanted to make a big first impression to her colleagues and her students.

She would be teaching photography in the annex of the school, back with the rest of the elective classes. Her room was still a little bit of a mess and as she searched around, she couldn’t find the new textbooks that had been ordered for her. She sighed and opened a closet, letting out a scream when they came tumbling out. She stumbled backwards, staring at the haphazard pile that had been placed in the closet by some well meaning person.

The sound of a voice caused her to look towards the door, her face turning red as a very handsome man asked her if everything were alright.

“Yeah, just had a scare.” She said, kneeling down to begin cleaning up the pile that was on the floor.

Cory looked into the room and caught a glimpse of a beautiful red head poke her head around the corner. He could tell she was embarrassed by the shade of red her face turned when she realized someone was there. Telling him "just a little scare." Cory chuckled. "nothing like a little scare on the first day. To be honest I thought you were jest practicing your mean approach and throwing books when I walked in." Cory laughed again and made his way over to where she was bent to pick up the books. Kneeling beside her Cory flashed a million dollar smile at Leah. Extending his hand to her "I am Cory. Or coach jones as the kids call me. I teach agriculture right next door." Joey softly took her hand into his as his other hand reached for a book to help her with the pile.

“Well, I’m hoping I don’t have to start throwing books on my first day.” She said with a smile as he knelt beside her and started to collect her books. “It’s nice to meet you, Cory. I’m Leah. Mrs. Gregory.” She flashed him the smile that she was well known for and shook his hand.

“Coach Jones? Let me guess…football?” She lifted the pile of books that she had in her arms and placed them on a nearby table. She looked over her shoulder at the surprised look that he gave her. “You strike me as a former football player. The height, the build…quarterback or wide receiver?”

She had loved football from the time that she was a small child. She hardly missed a game whether it was college, professional, pick up or high school. Her husband’s interest wasn’t the same as hers so she was often left to go to games alone, but that suited her just fine.

Cory was shocked at her hitting the nail on the head about football. "well I must admit mrs. Gregory you sure do have a nack for football. Quarterback." Cory said with a grin. "and yes I do coach football actually." Cory continued helping clean the books up.

"so is this your first teaching job mrs. Gregory? Or did you come from somewhere else?" Cory was amazed at her natural beauty not to mention re beautiful head of red hair she presented. As they cleaned up the books his heart sunk a little when he saw the wedding band she wore. "well doesn't hurt to flirt?" Cory thought in his head. As they picked up the last book the bell rang for the students to come to class. Cory stood and then offered his hand to Leah to help her up. As she took it he softly helped her up. "well mrs. Gregory I guess it is time to go to work? My room is right next door if you need anything. It was a pleasure meeting you!" Cory then turned and exited her room the thought of her racing through his mind as he greeted the students coming down the hall standing outside his door.

“Yeah, it is my first teaching job, actually. I was a stay at home wife until I got my teaching degree.” She said with a smile as he helped her up. “We just moved here from Minnesota. My husband is an accountant.” Her smile fell a little as she talked about her husband.

The ringing of the bell made her jump and she laughed as Cory started talking about getting to work. “Yeah, I guess so. It was nice meeting you too.” She watched his walk off before the students came in and she started her first class, taking a simple joy in teaching young minds about photography.

As the afternoon wore on, the bell rang for lunch and she found her stomach rumbling. Making her way next door, she knocked and peeked her head in. “Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to share lunch.”

Going Bout his first Day with ease Cory gave his first day spill to all his classes. The kids all lived him not only was he a good football coach but he was a great teacher. Before he knew it the bell rang for their hall to go to lunch. A few moments later Cory looked up and was surprised to see his new pretty neighbor standing there. "wanna share a lunch?" she asked with a smile.

Cory with his witty personality grinned back at her. "well I am a pretty big boy so I don't know if splitting one lunch will work for me? But I would be glad to have lunch with you!" Cory grinned and motioned for her to come on in as he reached behind his desk to his mini fridge and pulled a plastic shopping bag with a sandwich and a diet coke in it. "come on in make yourself at home! If I would have known I was going to have company I would have cleaned up a little!" Cory smiled and opened the soda and took a swig.

Leah laughed as he invited her in, offering her a seat at his desk. She watched as he pulled out a sandwich and a soda and she placed her own salad and juice on the desk, pulling up a seat.

“Diet? I would have thought you to a fully loaded guy.” She said, pulling out her fork and digging in. “So, you have a girl in your life? My husband and I are always looking for couples to go out with. Well, when I can pull him away from his work, that is.” She frowned for a moment as she tried to keep positive about the whole situation.

As she pulled up a chair Cory got a quick glance down her blouse. He was like a little school boy in awe as this happen. When she looked back up and ask her question Cory quickly snapped back into reality. "me with a lady?" Cory grinned at her. "nah. No woman here. Let's just say not to many women are thrilled to share a man with football."

Cory noticed the look of almost sadness when she spoke of her husband. Cory took another sip of drink. "so your husband works slot to? That is a shame? With a pretty lady like you at home I would be trying to get home as soon as I could." Cory grinned and took another bite of his sandwich.

“Yeah, he works too much sometimes, I think.” She sad softly as they fell into an easy conversation. “We got married really young and then just kind of drifted apart after that. We see each other briefly in the night if we’re lucky.”

She poked at her food, suddenly losing her appetite. “Share a man with football? That’s the best part about going to games is having someone to cheer alongside you.” She said with a large smile, her mood brightening slightly. “I’m a Viking’s fan, but I guess living down here I better learn to like the Cowboys.”

Cory could see that it seemed that taking about her husband upset Leah just a little. Trying to divert the situation. "Vikings fan really? You have got to be kidding me?" Cory smiled I know this may sound crazy but I grew up a bears fan!" Cory laughed a little. "But hey I am not here to start no trouble. I am just here to do the super bowl shuffle." Cory laughed and moved his arms a little like he was dancning.

"you know it's cool that you are a football fan. You will have to get out and catch a few games this year. They say there is no football like Texas high school football." Cory smiled and waded up the sandwich bag from which his now eaten sandwich once was as he tossed it in the garbage can beside his desk.

“I would love to come and watch some of your games. When’s the first one?” She asked him with a smile on her face as she finished her meal and packed away her things. “Maybe I can make it a photography project for my students. It would teach them to take action shots.”

She reached out and touched Cory’s hand gently with her own, a warm smile on her face. “I wanted to thank you for going out of your way to make me feel so welcome. It’s really nice to at least have one friend in an unfamiliar place. My husband is from Texas, but this is like another planet to me.”

Cory smiled when he heard her say she would love to come to the games. "actually our first game is tomorrow night. With us starting school on Thursday it is a little quick but it always is. So tomorrow will be crazy around here."

Just then Cory felt her reach out and touch his arm. Instantly he felt a jolt of electricity feel his body. Not knowing how to react he played it cool. "it is my pleasure. That is what Texas hospitality is all about!" Cory grinned as the bell rang. "well I probably wont see you again today as my day is pretty much over because I have football the rest of the day. So I will see you in the morning?" Cory smiled as he hated their conversation had to end but it was time to get back to work.

Leah smiled and nodded, gathering her things. “I’ll see you in the morning.” She agreed, already making plans for the next evening.

Her first day flew by, a lot of the students excited at the new assignment of taking pictures at the game. She went home with a smile on her face, one that wouldn’t even go away when she heard that her husband was working late and wouldn’t be home until well after midnight. That news might had taken the wind out of her sails on the worst of nights, but that night was different.

The next day, she walked into the school wearing blue jeans and a team shirt. She showed her school spirit like the rest of the students and was complimented by many of them. She knocked on Cory’s door and peeked her head in, showing him the shirt she’d managed to scrounge up.

“You think this works?” She asked him, excited that she was going to do something that she loved that evening.

Cory went through the rest of his day as normal preparing for the next evenings game with the other coaches and at practice. Later that evening Cory sat in his office at the football field house watching film. In the back of his mind was the pretty red head he had shared lunch with.

The next morning Cory was at school before the sun came up. On game days this was not unusual for him. As he made his way to his classroom he sat at his desk watching film again on the opponent for that evening. A short time before school was to begincory heard a tap on his door. When he looked up he saw Leah standing there decked out in her school spirit attire. If he thought she looked good yesterday the sight in her blue jeans and tight tshirt today was icing on the cake.

"I think that does more than work!" Cory said with a grin on his face. "how are you this morning? I see you survived the rest of your first day." Cory laid down the pen he had in one hand and paused the game tape setting the remote down in the other. Leaning back in his chair. He placed his arms in the air stretching a little. He was wearing a football tshirt and a pair of blue jeans. "wow! I didn't realize what time it was. I am glad you stopped by and brought me back to reality!" Cory stood and walked to a coffee pot in the back part of his room that was like a shop. "how about a cup of coffee?"

“Yeah, I have a good group of kids. They seem really excited that the school has included a photography class this year. It’s always good when they have a passion for what I’m teaching.” Leah smiled as she followed him towards the back of the room and waited for him to pour a cup of coffee.

“I was thinking that after the game tonight maybe you and I could go down to Dan’s Diner and get a bite to eat with the rest of the kids. My husband’s working late tonight and as long as you don’t have to watch tape or anything, it would be nice to spend some time with a friend.” She smiled warmly at him, thanking him for the cup of coffee as he passed it to her.

Cory poured Leah a cup of coffee and then heard her ask about after the game. "sure that sounds great. But I am not a big fan of socializing with the kids. You will learn small town small lives. People love to talk!" Cory smiled and took a sip of his coffee. "if you want though I usually unwind at my place after games with a six back on my back porch. If you are interested?" what was Cory doing he thought to himself inviting a married woman to his home. To justify his actions he thought she did invite me out.

Just the the bell rang and both of them knew it was time to go to work. "guess it is time to go to work?" Cory smiled. "I will be headed to the field house after first period my classes meet down there on game days. So if I dont see you again. Have a good day. If you get bored shoot me an email. It might help me escape the world of football for a few minutes!" Cory smiled "by the way I hope you don't take this the wrong way. But you look amazing today!"

“Throw some fast food into the mix and I’m there.” She said as she agreed to go home with him after the game. The bell rang and she sighed, nodding as he said that he was going to the field house after first hour. She had a full day with a planning period that would let her out of school an hour earlier than normal.

“I think I’ll drop you a line. If you need anything, let me know.” She said, blushing as he said that she looked amazing today. “Thank you. It’s been a long time since someone’s told me that.” She said, taking her cup of coffee and going to leave his room for her own. “You don’t look so bad yourself.” She said back before she slipped out, greeting her students as they shuffled in.

As she strutted away Cory smiled. When the bell rang for first period to end Cory was just about to shut down his computer and head to the field house when he had an idea. Hopping on his email quickly he found Leah's name on the directory and pulled up a email to her. Typinng in the subject box "maybe first but not the last" Cory moved to the subject box.

"I know you said it had been a long time since someone told you that you looked amazing so.....I didn't want for you to have to wait that long to hear it again. You do look absolutely amazing today! See you at the game! Cory..." Cory pushed send and then shut down his computer and headed down to the field house.

It was lunchtime before Leah had time to check her email and she found herself smiling at the message that Cory had left for her. She blushed at the thought that he thought she looked amazing in a t-shirt and jeans. With Tom, she always felt like she had to try so hard to get his attention. She shouldn’t have those thoughts, she scolded herself.

She clicked the reply button and thought for a long moment about what she was going to type back to him, “Thank you for the compliment. It certainly makes a girl’s day. I’ll bring you by a snack before you have to go out on the field. Leah.”

When her planning period came, she grabbed her camera and some film, placing it in a camera bag. She drove off campus to get him something to eat before she went to the field house and found where he was camped out before a film of the opposing team.

“Head’s up, Coach.” She said, tossing him the fast food back and smiling as he snagged it out of the air. “I though you said you were quarterback. Those are pretty quick hands.”

Cory saw he reply email pop up an smiled at the thank you and offer of food Leah was to bring. Cory sat there at his desk in his football office in the back of the field hous and continued to work and plan.

A few hours later Cory heard a tap on his door and when he looked up saw a small bag flying his way. Reaching up he snagged it with one hand and then smiled as he saw Leah standing there. When she mentioned the part about his positioning Cory chuckled "yeah I was a qb. But I was also drafted out of high school by the dodgers to play outfield." Cory grinned and opened the bag taking out the sandwich and opening it up.

"thanks for the grub. This will hot the spot. By the time we eat prevalent meal I am to wired to eat anyways. And usually pass. Come on in. Take a seat. I could use a break." Cory motioned for her to have a seat in the chair in front of his desk. She stood be the door where the name plate read. "offensive coordinator Cory jones." the office was filled with white boards of packages and plays. It was very evident Cory took his job very serious and not only that spent a lot of time in the big office. As on the couch to the side was a pillow and blanket.

“Oh, baseball, huh? You’re just full of surprises.” Leah said as she let him eat in peace and walked around his office, looking at all the whiteboards and plays that he had lain out around the room. “Dodgers…too bad I’m a Red Sox fan.” She grinned as she heard the noise that he made at her comment.

She smiled over her shoulder at him as she took the seat that he offered her. “Yeah, I thought that you might like something to eat before the game. I know when I get nervous that I don’t want to eat anything for a while. By the way, I was wondering if I could get on the field with the team and maybe take a few pictures. I think your players would like a couple of souvenirs throughout the season.”

She placed her camera bag on the top of his desk and looked at him across the way, a smile lighting up her face. “I really wanted to thank you for the complements today. It’s always nice to hear good things from a guy.”

Cory watched as she seemed more at ease with him now and not as nervous as she was yesterday. "yeah I never went when being drafted. I decided to go play football in college instead. Sometimes I wonder you know?" Cory then looked up from the sandwich as she mentioned being on the field. "I don't see it being a problem. To bad I will be in the box won't get to watch you at work." Cory smiled and laughed teasingly.

"actually it is probably better I will be upstairs that way I am not distracted by the pretty red head taking pictures." Cory smiled again. She then thanked him for his compliments. "are you kidding me? You never get complimented? Well as long as your classroom is next to mine and you wear outfits like that and that green dress and heels you had on yesterday. I do not see them stopping. You probably will be ready to file sexual harassment on me before it is over!" Cory smiles and finished the sandwich putting the wrapper in the bag and throwing it away.

Leah blushed a charming shade of red, her eyes lowering like she was a shy school girl as he mentioned that he would compliment her every day. “Well, I don’t hear the words as often as I would like from someone that I love.” She said in a soft voice, the disappointment of her marriage shining through.

“But I guess that’s just the way things are, right?” She said, that smile widening on her face as she tried to hide the pain and disappointment of her rapidly failing marriage. “You know, I had thought that a change of scenery and a new leaf here in Texas would change things, but it seems to be only getting worse. I wonder sometimes if he’s not seeing someone else.”

She looked up at Cory and sighed. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to put all of this on you and right when you have the first game of the season.”

As she spoke Cory sat and listened he could hear the sadness in her voice. "you are not bothering me at all. I am sorry for your struggles but it is good to vent every once in a while and I do not mind listening. And as for him finding someone else he is crazy if has. I couldn't imagine anything nicer than you to come home to. Honestly it would be hard to leave home if I knew you were there." Cory grinned his boyish grin at her.

"so we are still on after the game right? It will take me an hour or so after the game to be ready to leave. So if you need to go home or anything I can give you directions it is not hard to find." just then the bell rang in the field house signaling school had ended. The players would soon meet in the cafeteria for the pre-game meal. "well I hate to leave good company. But I think that is my que." Cory grinned and stood up behind his desk. "so tonight right?"
