I have been working on this and have a pretty good story going, you will probably see something in a week or so.
I haven't named the main character yet, and I am wondering...
is it too much to call her Chastity?

Nope. I call a lot of my cheating hoes Faith, Loyola, Fides, Credence, and other names that suggest unshakable trust.

It may be obvious and heavy handed, but it still works.

some of my favorite names are Constance, Charity, Chastity, Hope, and Faith...the reason I don't use them in my writing is that some day I might name a daughter one of them, and I wouldn't want my little girl to find one of these stories and go "eeeewe!!!"

Is it TOO obvious, though? Does it steal any subtlety the story might have possessed?

It doesn't (seem to, so far) take away from the idea of this story to name her Chastity. Hell, I have a book called 35,000 + Baby Names and I use it to develop names beyond Sarah, Cindy, Chris, and Bob. (And, I'll tell ya... My mom freaked out when I bought this book at 14!! ) I will sometimes look through Irish or German names only if I want a strong genealogy to a family, and I always look for a name's meaning to fit my character. Example: Caitlin is Irish for pure, so this character would be an "innocent virgin". Abigail is Hebrew for father's joy, so I might use this name for a "daddy's girl" incest story.






(Edited to add...
Many times the "opposite" meaning to a name is perfect for a character, too. Like Chastity for the tease, and some of the "cheating wives" Tate wrote of who had "faithful" names.)
