I have no great affection for Cruz and, if it came to a contest between him and Hillary, I don't know which one I would vote against. This would be one of those times when I wish "None of the Above" were an option.

By himself, regardless of what Obama wants to do, the POTUS cannot pass or repeal federal laws, but Cruz would be able to pass his program on to Congress. Filibusters would be possible, but there are ways to overcome them.

Common Core should be a state option, and the pres. can instruct DOE to allocate the principles to the several states.

A border fence was started some time ago but never finished. Work could resume on this until it was done. It would not be 100% effective, but it would certainly help. At the same time, immigrants with something to offer, including a strong work ethic coupled with education, would be welcome.

Liberals, including Obama, would love to make an end run around the Constitution and effectively repealthe Second Amendment, but he is saying he won't let that happen.

Except that the POTUS is the C in C, he would not be able to prevent Iran from getting nukes. However, he would have a great deal to say about it if he has the stomach to do so.

Personally, I would rather neither happen, but I would prefer bombing the shit out of Iran over allowing them to have nukes.

Let me start by saying that there are not truly reliable numbers on illegal immigrants. At some point you either trust the government and other information gathering groups are accurate or at least reasonably close or you don't. If you don't (not saying you in particular this is the generic you) then there is little point. At that point anything from zero to seven billion illegals huddled in garages is equally valid. That said between 33% and 50% (the link is for wikipedia but only because I can't find one to the PEW research that isn't a PDF) are overstayers of their visas. (Which is lower than the number I remember hearing I admit.)

I know a fence wouldn't be insurmountable. I didn't even think to accuse you of something so stupid. I think it's a waste of energy. If we accept that a third come here legally and simply don't leave we've got two thirds to deal with. Now since the majority of them come here to work and there are clearly less 1%ers (what you think the other 99% are the ones employing them for the most part? I'm not going to pretend I never went to the local Home Depot and picked up some guys to help me move but I'd be shocked to find that even makes up a large fraction.) Start putting employers in jail and fining their companies significant amounts of money and the problem ends pretty damn quick.

It would be possible to act against employers who hire illegals, but many of them work under the table, doing yard work and various handyman jobs. Frequently, women work in elder-care centers and are paid under the table. The jobs they usually do are so low-profile, it would be extremely difficult to catch up with most of them.

Years ago, I used to work in the fields and orchards of CA, as did thousands of others. It was hard work and we were part of the underclass, but we did it to support ourselves. Mostly we were paid piece work, but not much, but we did survive. Who's to say there wouldn't be thousands more who would do the work now?

I never made fifteen dollars an hour. Fifteen dollars on a good day would be more like it, and there were no bennies.
