Texas Electricity.

Some people don't understand the words "jobs" and "infrastructure."

Some people don’t understand the volume of rain that falls in a hurricane. Trying to pump the floodwater out via pipelines would be like trying to empty a swimming pool using a spoon.

Some people don’t understand that Houston’s elevation is 80 feet. El Paso’s elevation is 3800 feet. Amarillo’s elevation is 3,600 feet. A water pipeline from Houston to west Texas would be pumped uphill the entire way. Some people don’t understand that there’s a good reason why stormwater drainage systems are designed to use gravity, not work against it.

Some people never admit when they’re wrong.

Again, some people don't understand the words jobs or infrastucture.

Engineering can overcome all of the obstacles you list. The only reason the system doesn't exist is because of people like you who would rather not try, while sitting in the cheapseats throwing stones, is because your nature is be a lazy assed dumfuk.

Apparently your nature is to be a socialist who wants the government to spend trillions on “make work” unnecessary projects.

And you want this gigantic government spending project at a time when unemployment is at historic lows and there are already 6.2 million more jobs than there were pre-pandemic.

The only reason the system you dreamed up doesn’t exist is because it’s dumb and ineffective and wildly expensive. And dumb, did I already mention that?

(laughs in all the jobs, infrastructure and new energy rebuild plans shot down by Republicans during the Obama era because "they didn't want to try and sat in the cheap seats throwing stones" yelling about his birth certificate and socialism and all the other countless deliberate gridlocking bullshit)

Major heat wave post-Hurricane Beryl today and the Abbotized Texas fucking power grid is plagued with outages.

2 million Texans (out of 14 million homes) are without power right now. Most of them in Beryl's storm track.

Real-time link to document the carnage.

Really scary news: Houston has three hospital megaplexes within the city. All of them have hardened power supplies and backup power circuits. One system suffered a catastrophic outage of both primary and backup power transmission transformers yesterday. This evidently hasn't happened in decades. Volunteers were needed to hand pump oxygen into patients on ventilators for a couple of hours.

And this was a relatively minor hurricane.

Governor Greg Abbott had no comment.

HisArpy just dusted off the ole "job 'n infrastructure" voodoo economics that was used to justify the Keystone pipeline....the finished pipeline that employees 50 employees nationwide, but has spawned a new industry in spill cleanup.

Sure, let Texas spend their own money on it. It’s their own power system. But when this thing fails too, they can blame it on others (like you do)

Second storm in a row (2024 Houston Derecho windstorm on May 16th was the other one) where a major electrical transmission tower ("guaranteed to withstand up to a Category Four Hurricane!") has toppled over to an 80mph gust (in fairness, might have been directly hit by a mini-tornado that spawns off storms and lasts up to a minute, never registering on Doppler radar).

Joe Biden could not find him, apparently he's in Asia and Ted is whale watching in California.

Ike took out power in a dozen states or more, for over a week in many places. I was down for close to 10 days.

Similar tales are out there for most Tropical Systems that come inland.

What storms do is not political.

What storms do is not political. How prepared your government is both at the federal and state level however is. Texas seems to get hit by this year after year after year. The one that stands out in my mind was in 2012 when the Republicans were running one of their clown primaries with like twelve candidates. I remember Perry talking about all the departments he would cut from the federal government and FEMA was on that list. Then his state caught on fire and it wasn't the time to talk about defunding FEMA.

I'm a very strong believer that one of America's near fatal shortcomings is our anemic federal government in many areas. A lot of things that shouldn't be complicated are complicated because of states rights. I've said it plenty. FUCK states rights though I am really looking forward to when a state finally goes after a woman and doctors for leaving the state for an abortion.

However Perry here could have stood up and said right now we need FEMA but his goal is to make every state self sufficient and keep Uncle Sam out of our lives or whatever bullshit.

HisArpy here is talking sense. I don't know enough of the engineering to speak about the feesibility of this particular subject. The idea however of jobs, infrastructure and taking advantage of our vast geographic areas and seems like a no fucking brainer to me. I know how much water my state loses every year.

Remember the freezing temps in Texas? Clearly you don’t live in a region that knows what freezing water can do to pipes.

So let’s think about carbon-water Derpy’s idea for a pipeline from East Texas to West Texas.

Most pipelines take years to construct… the folks in Texas can’t keep an energy grid online ever, can’t ensure standard drinking water in winter freezes but yet we want to dump money on a project that won’t have any impact for years. (And even when completed will be self contained so oversight of it won’t happen, just like the energy grid… burst pipes everywhere in the 600 miles plus of piping. )

Fix the energy system…Connect to other states. Get your head out of your asses and you can bounce back faster.

Honestly I think states rights suck, our federal government doesn't do enough especially not in Texas and you should be prepping for the worst. I concur with what you said.

There is a place for states rights, when it’s something that makes sense. What Texas is doing makes no sense and is malpractice.

Maybe the real reason they can’t handle immigration since they barely can keep the citizens they have alive. Stop whining and do something productive like a government should.

Or waste resources like carbon-water Derpy wants. I’m sure they will go with option two…since the conservative movement is being taken completely over by MAGA brain dead zombies, Brawndo! It’s what plants crave! Idiots!

I didn't notice the power was out. Then and again........around these parts we don't have crybaby sheeple problems.

Personal responsibility serves us well

Shut down the Bitcoin mills and there will be plenty of power.

i am sure the elderly and babies on ventilators agree with you.

what the hell happened to you people? it used to be that we had philosophical differences but trump has just killed your brains.

Shut down the Bitcoin mills and there will be plenty of power.

The bitcoin mills happily volunteer to shut down during peak demand in the scorching summer season here in Texas.
Why?
Because mils make more money selling pre-purchased electricity back to ERCOT than they do from bitcoin mining.

Last August, one of the twenty bitcoin mills in Texas announced it had made 8 million dollars profit in one month mining bitcoin....and 23 million dollars profit selling pre-purchased electricity back to ERCOT at market rate.

Homeowners can make up to five dollars a month allowing ERCOT to load-manage their electronic thermostats....bitcoin mills get 23 million in a month.

Bitcoin companies buy decaying oil-bust skyscrapers in downtown urban areas considered at minimal risk for flooding and tornadoes. All they need are industrial strength power circuits and reliable internet. They gut most of the floors and route air conditioning down to server farms they install on the premises (Server farms run pretty hot). A handful of computer techies, a single building engineer, and a security guard make up the entire population of the building.
