The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

If you Google British Figgy Pudding you will see loads of different recipes! We love our old-fashioned steamed puddings. I guess you could use an air fryer these days to achieve the same result in half the time.
Yeah, I was wading through multiple recipes last night. I was leaning towards the darker pudding/cake with molasses in it…

Then I found The original Medieval Gingerbread cookie recipe…I might take a swag at this?

The texture thing is a high hurdle for some. Oysters were always a part of coastal living growing up, and we had then in any “R” month if’n it wasn’t too hot. Especially when we’d go harvest them off the oyster rocks. I’ve only recently come to understand Oyster Stew was a Christmas Eve tradition for most. We would do it anytime we had any left over from a roast or on really cold days.

The stew came out…oh man…it’s always good…it was FANTASTIC this batch! Three pints of some really big oysters and lots of oyster liqueur they were packed in. Local to boot.

I watched the race and sent momma a text…be over afterwards. Got there around noon. We decorate some more, polish off the beans from the day prior. Watch a Christmas movie (did I say she’s in the spirit?), get updates on our little travelers stuck in Austin, TX due to delays, fix some things that needed fix’n, and listened to Andre Bocelli and his family sing Christmas songs…did I mention she’s in the spirit?

It was about this time she pipes up and tells me she put the star on the tree. Now this is a big tin deal, that she Jerry Rigged by gluing two halves together. I didn’t notice it…because nothing gets by me🙄…when it dawns on me.

How the F did she get up there and hang it? 🫩

So now I’m pissed. More so at my self than her. I should have spent the night…mainly to make sure she’s not climbing like a squirrel all over the house hanging decorations. It sort of ruined our fun time as I had to lecture my 82 yr old toddler on the dangers of broken back momma’s climbing ladders! She fell off one a couple years ago but it was n the yard and nothing but pride was harmed.

So, stewing about it, and on Bocelli Christmas special #3…I threw in the towel…called SWMBO to come pick me up ASAP! She got another lecture from SWMBO and I went home and drank a half bottle of wine…

The struggle is real…off to my happy place or an institution today…

Very touching and a lesson learned that I shall not forget in my 80s: do as your wise kids tell you to do. Their worry is love!

Hey B2…ever done a Figgy Pudding? Was sitting around looking for something different to make this Christmas and thought…why not?

Maybe some of our Mates from across the pond have some experience? I see there are two ways of doing it; Baking and Steaming.

The steaming looks involved and to be honest…that doesn’t sound appetizing!
I have a Scottish cook book and will look it up. I have made scones. Lots of work but very delicious. 😋

quick catch up before a late afternoon nap
You're gonna need a bigger barn! 😅😅
Did everyone hear that in Roy Scheider's voice? Or just me? :ROFLMAO: 🦈
I still think I'll pass. You can have mine!
I come from a seafood loving family. Dad was raised less than 2 miles from the Atlantic. Everyone... except me. Meh - leaves more for them.
The Scots call it a Dundee Cake. It’s a better recipe because you avoid the typical gummy like citrus junk they pawn off in commercial fruit cakes.
Are you still using the same Dundee Cake recipe you shared in a previous post?
I gave away the Sorel boots.
I had wanted a pair of Sorel boots for years and years. In my 20s I stumbled across a fantastic deal and bought a pair. They were SO warm, and cozy, and snug... too much so. Being that they were mid-calf boots, something about how they held my foot and ankle so snug messed with how my ligaments pulled on my knees.
Christmas came early that year - for my baby sister. I didn't even get to wear them outside once. 🤷‍♀️ She loved them!
Brandy, rum, Scotch? I remember the story where my sister would marinate with rum and did it daily🤭! When my uncle tasted it, he told my aunt: “ The kids can’t have this as they are under age and please keep it away from an open flame”.
I've had the same said about my Rum Balls.
Haven't made them in years. None of my family likes rum and most of my friends don't drink. I did make Boubon Balls for a brother and SIL several years ago... sent them with brownies for the kids (triple fudge but no booze or "funny" brownies). Was given a "Cease and Desist" order on sending baked goods and sundries their way. Something about gaining 5 pounds with every box opened? Ah well...
FYI. You can get 'em in there, but it's really hard to air up tires on both sides when you want to get 'em out. (If said tires tend to flatten over time...)

Don't ask how I know. Just trust this knowledge, the source, and the infallible nature of Murphy.
Would this handy-dandy gizmo help any?

I always thought steaming was "original", but have seen some "quick pudding" recipes over the years. Those use a microwave to hurry things along. Here's a few to give you an idea, plus Mary Berry's own recipe - which, of course, she steams. Would you really expect anything else from her? ;) (GBBO IYKYK)

Midwest. I notice we drop allot of vowels and consonants 🤪
 Previous to now and currently, I live in areas named by Native Americans and "discovered" by French Explorers and others. So, lots of French and Native place names.
Last place - they were pretty good about pronunciations.
Not this place
Case in point: Lake Gervais
Oh - like the comedian, Ricky Gervais, you may think. According to Wikipedia, Ricky's father was "a Franco-Ontarian of French Canadian and Iroquois descent who grew up on a farm in Pain Court, Ontario near Chatham, Ontario."
So... how do the locals pronounce this Lake? It's named after Benjamin Gervais, a French/Canadian settler who claimed the land back in 1844.
That's right... it's Lake JAR-viss :cautious:
Don't get me started - I have a list!

Look into how much nutmeg is too much. I skimmed the article and they made a mention but not sure they went into detail. Otherwise - let me know how it turns out. I'm a sucker for ginger!
It's naptime. Then we pack.
Yes! Naptime!! Then in my case and unpacking as I've just got home from a weekend of cat sitting and show shoveling. Good to be home, but I do miss my Snuggle Buddy 🐈‍⬛

Philly was fun last night. We had a decent cheesesteak and beer. Then headed to the venue about a 20 minute walk away on South Street.

I had never been to this place before, but it was a great punk rock club. Two stories: the bottom floor was the main bar and a few pool tables. There was a DJ who was spinning unbelievably great classic punk rock tunes. It was as if I was the DJ, or he was reading my mind.

The bands were on the second floor. Small, intimate venue. Maybe only 50 or 60 people there, which is too bad for the bands. First opening band was excellent, middle band, not as much. The headliner, The Effigies, were amazing! Great, guitar driven sound. My buddy from Pittsburgh has been wanting to see them for 30 years. (they’ve been breaking up and reforming periodically… And interestingly, just spent two weeks opening for the black crows, of all bands.

Anyway, they kick some ass and we’re super approachable and we bought them around at the end of the night. It was a late one.

And today I just had to stumble into the office in Philly… I was stumbling.

Us and the effigies. ⬇️
Another approachable and friendly band: the punk rock ethos and credo!

She told you because she feels guilty. Our parents are trying at times. I get it. Try not to be too upset with her. It is hard for them to realize that they are not as indestructible....

Please add more info to your profile. I like to know who or whom I'm chatting with.
I'm finicky with that...
Thank you.
It's funny you should say that because it was while I was trying to update my profile that I found myself locked out of Lit for several months.
When I finally found a way back in there was no way to update my profile, which had been wiped clean.
However, I have finally managed to update a few details.
