I have finally caught up! Why does everything happen at this time of year? I was in my car today and the check engine light came on. Something to do with an O2 sensor that's $600!!!

Ok. I'm sorry, but this pisses me off. (At one point I was a certified mechanic. I still do my own stuff.) On average this is probably an under $50 part, and likely a 10 minute job once the car is in the air. I've done many of these on.my own stuff. I know you can't do it yourself, so you're kinda stuck. I would gladly offer to help if you weren't several thousand miles away.

If you can find the right mom and pop shop, and get to know them, it might be worth looking for one.

Dr Tyler had a small auto shop right around the corner from where she lived. They took care of her stuff for the last few years for her. I think they took pretty good care of her, too. There’s a lot to be said for that.

I think the smaller shops where the overhead is low are what to look for. If the waiting room is kinda grungy, the wife runs the books, and the guy wrenching has salt and pepper going on. Especially if he's got maybe one or two other guys helping that's probably what you want.

As soon as there's bright lights, a spotlessly mopped floor, and two receptionists working the counter, and the guy doing the quote has a nice clean shirt, there is enough overhead that they have to charge extra.

Nothing wrong with them making a buck. I just don't wanna give them ALL of mine.
