The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

I've always been a picky eater. Not many food adventures but -

Alligator Quesidillas in Spokane, WA (chef was Cajun) - tasted like calimari heads (unimpressed )

Oxtail Soup and Turtle Soup in Waterford, Ireland - oxtail tasted like a rich beef stock with really good clarity. I don't recall what the turtle soup tasted like but I finished my portion and felt conflicted. 🤷‍♀️

Escargot - tasted like if you removed erasers from #2 pencils and sauteed them in a garlic butter sauce. Meh

Dried cuttlefish - basically, fish jerky made from baby squid. A half Japanese friend in college turned me onto this tasty snack. I don't tolerate any shelf-stable fish anymore and miss it. More tender than beef jerky. And a fish flavor but not "ew, fish"

Seaweed (nori, wakame, etc) is pretty mainstream now. First tried dried nori in high school biology. Was the only one in the class who would try it. Shocked the teacher by asking if I could have the rest of the sheet to finish. 😂 I still like snacking on it... and like the seaweed salad served at sushi and Japanese restaurants, too. 😋

Oh - Ostrich. There was a phase @ 30 years ago when ostrich and bison both got really popular as lean protein options. Never tried the bison, but found a butcher that carried ostrich. Similar to white meat turkey. Very lean, more neutral flavor than turkey so great with all different kinds of seasoning. I loved making stir fry and curries.

I did buy some bison patties. Several brothers voiced an interest in trying it. The youngest 2 were home one weekend when I stopped over with the bison. They had a few friends over. I showed them the patties and they asked if I would cook it up for them all to try. Knowing it was really lean, I brought my George Foreman grill, too.

They tried it and loved it but said they were surprised it was so bland. Raw, the patties were very bright in color. So they all thought I meant Buffalo (seasoning). I had to explain it was the animal not the hot sauce. Positive reviews all around. 🦬
I guess I should just start this yarn with the jars of Pickled Pigs Feet in every Juke Joint in the South…

A longneck bud and PPF…😉. Oh-Yeah!

Escargot in France and Germany. I’m an oyster fan, so the same consistency if I remember. Again, I might have been primed with French wine and German beer…which we all know makes things taste better. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alligator in Naw’Lins…good but not really a must have IMO…was with SWMBO on this jaunt so the drinking was limited…

I’ve posted the recipe out of Momma’s turn of the century cookbook of Sea Turtle Soup…never had it…but If’n I should get stranded on a deserted Isle…I’ll have the recipe to cook one up. They’re protected/endangered now so just can’t go conch one on the head…🤣

Speaking of Conch…Fritters in the Bahamas…not a fan. Too chewy. It’s possible they just weren’t prepared right.

Squid in many forms. Favorite was in Korea. The object of my affection worked behind the bar at this place I wasn’t supposed to be (story for another day) and they would have these pancake sized cuts of dried squid. She’d light an open flame burner, roast it on there like a tortilla, and then serve it on a plate with mayo and peanuts. You’d peel strips and dab the mayo, then roll a peanut up in. Mmmmm-mmmm…wash it down with an OB beer…Yeah…

Speaking of Korea…Kagogi…IYKYK…all I’ll say is…I was really drunk at the time…🙄

Many different Jerky types. Can’t think of anything else to report. Pork Rinds maybe? 🤣

Oh yeah…SWMBO, gets cuts of Bison. Not a fan of the burgers but her little medallions she makes are fantastic!

Spitting rain today, but the 60+ d wx is still holding. Gonna make some raised beds today for the garden. Total redo of where it’s at now. Trying to decide if the wood I have on hand will do or just throw in the towel and go to Tractor Supply and buy a prefab deal…If the price is right?

I’m definitely ready to be a grandmother. A lot of my friends are, but my kids are not in the space in their lives when that’s a practical reality yet.

Best wishes to your children.

Allow What Is To Come to come when it comes . . . and not a second before.

I honestly never thought I'd be a grandparent. I had no opinion on the topic. Yet, here it is. Go figure.

Good morning denizens of the greasy spoon. Lilli and Kathy have insomnia?

All the talk of game as food reminded me of the challenge my sister gave me one Thanksgiving. She was tasked with a game Thanksgiving. She told me I responsible for the duck which I never cooked! So I got the orange juice and marinated it every hour cooking it on low heat for hours. The crew loved it. I never cooked it again and don’t want to.

These days I am more vegetarian but love my salmon and whitefish. Marinate the salmon with one part bourbon, brown sugar and olive oil.
I’ve always wanted to try roasting a goose. I’ve heard it’s not easy. I don’t ever remember seeing it on any menu at the game houses I’ve visited over the years either. Yet, it was a staple in years gone by?

I’ve only had duck once and I don’t think it was prepared well. I’m somewhat of avid and accomplished home Cook, but that’s not in my wheelhouse. Kudos to you for trying.

I wonder if Canada goose is tasty. They are the original Undocumented Aliens. There seems to be a nesting pair on the job.

Well…I’ve thought many a long thought on this. 🤣

We’re so overrun with Canada Goose, that I can literally walk out in my yard, and if I’m quick enough, wring ones neck. 😁

I’m thinking it’d be more sporting to actually call one in on the river and at least heat a barrel in the endeavor!

Have you watched klaebo from norway run uphill on skis at a nice clip...??6 min mile?? I think i heard....go Norway.... my home country.... they are amazing. There are stories of the skiers coming out of the mountains to harass the germans in ww2 and then skiing away and not being able to be caught
Norway is the king of gold. They are fantastic winter athletes!

I’ve had goose twice. My brother did “a Christmas goose”. It was ordered through the hunt club he was a member of. Plump juicy a little gamey. It was good but I am not in any hurry to do it again. The other was from a duck hunt and a goose was legally taken. I tasted it but was not at dinner. And pretty young. Didn’t really appreciate it was a goose.
More recent was duck hunted on the lake. The chef is an excellent cook. She roasted it in the oven and used the grease from the roast in all the vegetables and gravy. It was awesome. I’m a pretty good cook but feel that is beyond my ability. Have not tried a frozen one from the store yet. There are many choices here.

It is also healthier to eat seasonally...less of the artificial methods of ripening with chemicals that we imgest and make us sick..... i.e. autoimmune diseases and shit we didnt have 100 years ago
Just not possible here. 6 months of snow means you simply can't eat that way. It's such a short growing season, preservation is needed.
But we eat a lot of things year around without chemicals. A lot Most of our own food goes in a freezer which lasts the year. It's nice to have things like fruit and veggies and chickens all year. A few canned items, like pickles and this year some applesauce (abundance of apples).

The ingredients for chicken pot pie the other night was all from here. (Neighbor does the chickens, we buy from them.) But everything else was grown on the property (Beans, corn, peas, carrots). We tried freezing zucchini and yellow squash this year. It's working out well too. Might try potatoes again. They just taste better fresh.

We're going to start being overrun with fruit soon. Apples and cherries are really starting to kick in. Blackberries, has too much for a decade now. Put 9 gallons in the freezer last fall, about the same the year before.

Spent a few catching up. The task this morning was changing/un-butcher some wire. Someone many years ago decided to use the push in connections on the outlets, and those finally failed leaving intermittent power down one wall. I'm far too old to be kneeling on the floor changing outlets. Maybe next time the whole place gets a match! :ROFLMAO:

Old dog is happy I'm FINALLY sitting at the computer. She's snoring next to me on her bed. Weekends really throw her, no one does what they're supposed to be doing!

It's snowing again, but not enough to worry about yet...

Off to fix more stuff...

I have been switching out my switches and receptacles for a while now. I shopped for the ones that match code too. The ones I am replacing are code as well. Just not all 20amp and there are not home runs where they should be. I wish I had the guts to put AFCI breakers in my panel. That would solve on problem in the kitchen where the fridge is on a circuit with other outlets in the kitchen. Also in the far side of the kitchen I would like those outlets to be on at least GFI and the circuit that goes in the garage. On those circuits it is quite a commitment to change out. I have to do all the outlets at once because of the amount of furniture I will have to move to find the first outlet on the circuit. That said, it is also the excuse I seem to be using to not switch out the outlets and switches not yet completed else where in the house. I counted them which amp and bought bulk to save a few dollars. But who knew a little townhouse has this many outlets! I went to rectangle for both and they do look much better. I did all the ones that were loose and or highly visible to start. I really do need to get back to work on that. Maybe after I finish the taxes....
