THE ABYSS
He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.

In the not-too-distant future, human kind has become aware of something else walking among them. The monsters from their children's story books lived and breathed as they did. These creatures hid among the humans for countless ages, blending in and hiding. Thriving in their own ways. Unfortunately, this uneasy coexistence couldn't last forever. Clashes between rival races spilled out of control and into the public eye. Soon enough, the governments of the world banded together in this single united cause to rid their world of these... "blights of nature". The "Purge" as it would become known, reduced most their ranks to the brink of extinction. Now there are only a few left, in hiding, running scared and divided. Surviving as best as they can.

The Players

Humans - Your run of the mill homosapien. They are the majority and no longer fear the various monsters. Most carry weapons to protect themselves. They are no longer "easy prey". The Government along with the help of the Church and it's occult resources, have studied the weaknesses of each race of creature and devised creative and lethal ways of combating them. For vampires, all of their firearms are equipped with UV flashlights and they have grenades that disperse garlic powder into the air. For werewolves, they are equipped with silver bullets and knives. They also have grenades that disperse silver dust into the air. The UV flashlights also work on trolls, turning their skin to stone. Some creatures, such as fairies and goblins, they simply use the tried and true method. Bullets, bullets, and more bullets. Humans are to be feared and avoided.

Vampires - Every known coven had been wiped out. There are too few vampires left to hold one together. The elders all hide away from the world, those that still live anyway. Like the rest of the creatures, they are scattered and leaderless. Most travel alone, trying to blend in where they can and hide when they cannot. They are severly allergic to garlic and UV rays. Sunlight will cause their skin to ignite on contact and if not treated, they will eventually burn till dead. The process is usually quite quick, but sometimes it can be prolonged depending on exposure. Garlic causes them to go into anaphylaxis. Their throat will swell up and they will end up suffocating to death.

Abilities include increased strength, agility, perception, and speed. They are immortal, but that does not mean they are invulnerable. They can heal, but it takes time depending on the severity of the wound and how much blood they have in their system. Because vampirism drastically reduces their ability to create new blood, they must imbibe it through other means. This lack of blood causes their skin to be abnormally pale. They have fangs to help pierce flesh, but they are constant and easily noticed.

Werewolves - All of the packs were decimated during the Purge. What is left of the creatures, roams the subway tunnels and sewers of larger cities, feral and hungry. The other races know to stay out of the underground systems. Those who venture down there usually don't return. The lycans are highly allergic to silver. Even skin contact will burn them. If ingested it will cause them to choke, go into anaphylaxis and eventually die.

Abilities include a transformation into a large wolf-like beast, proportionate strength and speed. At full height most are 8-9 feet tall, largely muscular, with a jaw strength that can snap a person's arm in half in one bite. When transformed, they only see in black and white but their other senses are expanded upon. They can hear, smell, and taste better than any creature on the planet. Because of this they are the best at tracking and hunting and also avoiding those that are trying to pursue them. Most lycans belonging to the same pack have the same fur coloring. There are greys, blacks, and browns, but even more rare are ones with white coats. They are not immortal and actually have a shorter life span than most humans at about 50-60 years old. They can transform at will, but the younger and less experienced they are, the more it hurts.

Other Creatures - fairies, goblins, and trolls are largely extinct. There are a few left, but you would be hard pressed to actually find them. It is hard to nail down specifics and details on them because of the vast variation among them. So many different kinds of each that it is nearly impossible to categorize them. Rarer still are changelings, half-breeds, and demons. Most know better than to show themselves for what they are. If they can get away with hiding, they will.

The Setting

On the onset of the Purge, martial law was declared and the military took control of the cities around the world. It was the only way to effectively and efficiently cast a wide enough net to catch the monsters. Every street, alley, and corner is patrolled by armed soldiers. A curfew is in effect and no one is allowed out at night. Humans only leave their homes in the daylight.

The story will take place in a larger, unnamed city and the outskirts that surround it. It is a port city, on the eastern coast of the United States. Large skyscrapers and various districts. All borders and entrances have checkpoints.

At the beginning, each character will be on their way to a meeting. So it is assumed that you at least trust each character enough to show up. You can travel with another character or alone, makes no difference, as long as you are headed to the gathering in the first intro post.

RP Info

Group thread, limited number of slots. Will largely be story driven. More realistic, over fantasy setting in regards to physics and abilities. Be reasonable with characters and their abilities. Keep in mind, your character is "on the run" so treat them as such. Typical RP rules apply, don't control other people's characters without permission, no killing or forced actions unless agreed upon by all parties, etc etc.You all are mature, intelligent folks. Treat each player and their character with the respect you'd want shown to you and yours.

I will post a bio tomorrow. If interested, PM your bio (based off of mine) to me and I will approve or deny it and have you post it in the thread. I don't want to discourage anyone, but if I don't know you or how you play, I'll be less inclined to include you. It will really all depend on the bio and how well written it is.

This OOC thread will be for questions, comments, and suggestions during the life of the IC RP thread.

I will be controlling where the overall story goes, but feel free to toss in little plot twists. If you think it might challenge the current direction in a big way, please let me know beforehand so we can work something out. I'm always open to hearing ideas so please don't hesitate.

Thanks, hope you all enjoy.

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee44/Sorukage/vergilclose.png

Name: Vergil
Age: 600 - looks early 30's
Race: Vampire
Height: 6'3''
Hair: White
Eyes: Blue

Personality: Vergil is quiet, somber, and weary most times. He has grown tired of running.

Special Abilities: None aside from typical vampire attributes.

Weapons: None at the start of the story.

Bio: The great shame of Vergil's past is that he abandoned his coven during the Purge. When the fight came to them, they banded together, ready to fend off the humans. Vergil though, he knew... he knew they would all die. The humans were too many in number. His coven was outmatched and outgunned. So he fled and has been since that day. All throughout their underworld, he is known for fleeing and most don't trust him because of it. It has been hard to find shelter, even his friends had abandoned him.

But then he met Dawn. A human girl who had been sneaking out from her apartment to leave food for the alley cats in her neighborhood. One night, Vergil saw the girl and the soldiers who cornered her. He made a choice that night to stay and fight, to protect that human. She was an innocent. He had no attachment, no cause... he just wanted, for once, to do the right thing.

Ever since, the two of them have been traveling together. She looks out for him during the day, and he watches over her at night. The temptation to drink from her is often times maddening. It takes great restraint just to be around her, even more when they are intimate.

Now though, there may be a chance at ending their time on the run. A meeting of old acquaintances, friends long thought dead. It seems there is a refuge, hidden from the humans. "Haven" they called it. It sounded too good to be true, but Vergil was tired... so tired. A chance at ending all of this was too good to pass up.

Dawn McCallister

http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd255/mephistophelily/redhead_by_effic-d3chri1.jpg

Dawn McCallister
Age: 24
Race: Human
Height: 5'6"
Hair: Auburn
Eyes: Hazel

Personality: Dawn tends to be much more outspoken than her companion, trying hard to keep herself in good spirits... though often, it's forced. When it comes to him, she can be quite protective. She no longer trusts most humans.

Special abilities: None.
Weapons: A 9mm Beretta she stole.

Bio:
Dawn lost her mother when she was young. What exactly happened, her father never said... Just that he joined the City Guard because of it. Spending most of her time alone, she took company with the stray animals that seemed to grow in numbers. Her father had seemed to have her same interests in caring for strays, telling her one evening of a young boy he had found wandering near the subway exit, how he worried on him and had hidden him away to keep him safe.

A few nights later, her father never came home.
The Guard said he had been killed by lycans for taking the boy.
Her father had said no one else knew about him...

Alone, she continued to care for the animals, using them to keep her occupied between various jobs to keep herself going, both financially and emotionally. The one night she went after the cat that ran away... That changed everything. She met him... Vergil. He saved her life.

She hadn't even thought she wanted it saved.

She was barely 20 at the time, at his side now for 4 years. As solemn and stoic as he seems, she tries to crack a smile on those lips. Her attentions seem to ride between caring for him (as much as he may say he doesn't need it), and her love for animals still (as much as it may frustrate him). A mark resides on her upper left arm; his old coven's crest, with a v centered in it, a branding he insisted she get to warn others on her position at his side. Though he's never bitten her, the willingness to let him has always been there... just never stated.

Dawn would do just about anything for him.

This upcoming meeting has her concerned, but encourages his interest in it. Whatever makes him happy... she'll go along with.

Well thank you kindly. Yes, there will be sex involved. Although the focus will be story driven, there will be plenty of sex scenes. Trust me. ;)

I updated my earlier bio post with pics for my vampire character, Vergil. Just to give you all an idea of what I'm looking for while I finish his bio.

Thanks!

Name: Veronica...sometimes
Age: a bit over a century, but appears 20

Veronica...Niki...Ronni, of course...V...and many other names that had nothing to do with one another.

And she was only a bit more than a century old.

More names would come in time.

She’d always lived on the edge. Becoming a vampire had just made it easier.

She’d been a dharma bum, beat poet, groupie, party girl, broke international law with the Rolling Stones, found herself in England when fighting really began between the mods and punks, and she’d been both.

Then the 70s, disco, decadence that hadn’t been seen since Rome.

That became home for her.

Drugs hadn’t done anything for her in ages. Vampire metabolism simply built up a tolerance too fast. New chemical agents worked for a while, then just faded off.

Then, she found Scarlet.

Her girl.

Her one true love.

With that in her veins, her body suddenly producing its own blood, and the chemicals that rushed through her brain, upsetting every delicate balance...euphoria wasn’t even close.

And how strong she became. All vampires have presence.
But Veronica, she became a force of nature, and followers seemed to appear from no where.
She took to the underground scene, where she could be more open about who she was, though never completely.
All anyone knew was she was something utterly different.
And they almost worshipped her.
Heaven, for her and Scarlet.

Then came the Purge.
The end of her reign.
And Scarlet seemed to vanish.

Blood had been a necessity, but one she held in disdain. It tasted like ash in her mouth, but while the drug would allow her to make her own for a while, it wouldn’t last.

Now, her girl was gone, and so she took to feeding again, hating every taste.

Sometimes she’d return, for a while, and make her a queen again.

Sometimes she’d leave for ages.

And sometimes, while she hid in a dumpster from some mob, Scarlet would whisper to her, make her shake and cry vomit.
Her girl had harsh, vile words for her.

Do our profiles require pictures? I consider myself a wordsmith and prefer to shape images with words, will that be acceptable in profile submission?

Hi! Still quite new here, but I was caught by this story-and would love to join if it's okay.

I'm gonna go ahead and take a seat, right here.

And by that I mean I'll be coming up with a bio soon.

Name: Jessica Trent.
Age: 75, looks to be in late 20's
Race: Ghost
Height: 5' 2”
Hair: Black.
Eyes: Grey.

Personality: Jessica tends to be quiet, she is analytical and usually speaks when she thinks she has something of import to say. She can be sarcastic and critical of others.

Special Abilities: Intangible, Invisibility, Sense others of her kind.
Haunting: The ability to control/posses Inanimate objects. Control a yo-yo: Stupid easy, no effort. Other small objects with not much issue, beyond a Bowling ball or such is very hard at present, she might be able to do more as she goes.
Witches Nimbus: She can effect radios, TV's, computers to some degree, in theory, she may be able to actually alter or generate electricity.

Drawbacks: Using her abilities can and will draw the attention of other Ghost and beings of that nature.
Copper also seems to have an adverse effect on Ghost, even causing pain. They try to avoid passing through it. It may be possible to "Cage" a ghost with copper via panels or wire mesh.

Weapons: None at present.

Bio: “Life is a bitch, and then you die.” Jessica hates this phrase and would really enjoy beating the idiot who put it into the world.
There are many ways to die, Suicide, Murder, accident, and execution. Jessica died while waiting for a train. It was listed as an accident, Jessica felt the hands that pushed her into the tunnel from the platform.
She was killed and she knows why, or strongly suspects.
Jessica cannot remember much of her life beyond the months before her death, but she knows she worked in parliament and was a secretary for a member of the house of Lords. It was at this time that she discovered an illegal testing facility that was conducting experiments on prison inmates. The exact nature of which is lost to Jessica, but she remembers the projects name, “Black Rose.”

She knows she spoke to someone about this and she feels it is the reason she was killed.
It's been nearly 60 years since her death and she has few if any clues. Getting any where for Jessica is hard because she has a memory problem, Ghost don't tend to remember things unless they have a catalyst like an object, a person, or place.

The Purge tends to over look ghost most the time, mainly because they rarely stand out and they are very easy to deal with.
When they do become a problem is when they are Blips or Glitches, and Military and Church forces usually come out hard when dealing with Specters, Ghost that have fallen so far from their humanity, they become insane mindless beast bent on killing humans.

Specters come from Ghost, Specters eat other ghost.

Hi! Still quite new here, but I was caught by this story-and would love to join if it's okay.

So sorry, just caught this. It was lost between bios it seems! Yes, you are very welcome to PM a bio. I will read it over and get back to ya!

I feel the need to pop this up here before I get any more bios sent to me.

This story will be one of survival, which will mean our characters are going to be the underdogs. That means no ultra powerful beings, demons, angels or otherwise. It will unbalance the game if your character can easily defeat scores of enemies and has no reason to hide or run.

Think of it like a reverse zombie story. You've got the zombies which outnumber the humans. The zombies are the overwhelming, almost unstoppable force. Now flip that around. In this story, the monsters take the place of the humans and the humans are the zombies in that they are the overwhelming, almost unstoppable force.

So the more balanced, the better.

Sorry if that wasn't more clear in my initial post.

Also, keep in mind that all of our characters, at the beginning, will be familiar with each other. We will, at the very least, know your character's name and maybe something widely spread about them. For instance, everyone knows Vergil abandoned his coven. So you might greet him politely, but in your mind remark that he is a coward... etc etc.

Do you have something like that for your character? Go ahead and post it. Vail's character is an addict. If that is widely known by those at the meeting, some of us might use it in our dialogue. Things like that will help with character development down the road.

So...I'm going to throw this out there then. I was thinking of making a runt troll. I know you said they were very rare, but I kinda had the seed of an idea for him. If you'd prefer, I'll PM you the bio and then post it here.

Yeah, send it to me so I can look it over before you post it. That'd be best. Thanks.
