The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

I try to avoid shopping areas as much as I can between thanksgiving and 12/27.

Beyond flying to NC to visit in laws, I have to get bloodwork done on 12/26 and surgery on 12/29, so I can;t hibernate.
And my wife wants to go by the Apple Store which is only a couple of miles from our hotel in NC. She wants a new iPad and is thinking about the better display (she wants to start using her iPad for sheet music instead of her giant binder she has been using. (At home, our closest Apple store is in an another country. The easiest to get to is still three hours away.)

There are a few members of my various groups that have gone the iPad route. It apparently works well and (somehow) solves the page-turning problem, where you have like four beats to flip the page and the pages invariably stick together.

My problem with this idea is the quality of the music stands we encounter especially in school settings. Frequently the tops are loose and floppy, just waiting for something heavier than paper to get dumped on the floor. It's to the point now where I carry a 7/16" box wrench in my oboe case to fix these. I guess if your wife has been okay with the binder (I do the same thing with one group), then she'll be fine with the iPad.

My wife says it turns half a page at a time so you have a large margin to find a spot to turn the page

Just peeking in to see how the plot bunnies are doing, let people know I'm still alive. Arguably a good thing, but definitely a state of being..

I found an interesting app on Roku - RetroMovies. It was mostly that junk from the 1930s that nobody watched back then, but then as I sifted through their catalogue I found Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens, a Russ Meyers movie that I believe was rated X when it was released. It was a nudie comedy and purely awful unless you liked large tits. But then I found Patton, Tora Tora Tora, The Sand Pebbles, Midway (Charlton Heston version) Where Eagles Dare, In Harms Way, Spartacus (Kirk Douglas version), the more I looked the more Hollywood classics turned up. It was immediately my favorite channel on Roku

This morning I fired it up hoping to watch The Sand Pebbles end to end and maybe Lawrence of Arabia tonight, and it was GONE! Roku simply says "This app has been removed"

Of course every movie I had added to my watchlist is still available, behind the pay wall at Amazon Prime

🤬

At least I got to watch Tora Tora Tora uninterrupted.

Always hated that studio interference robbed us of the Kurosawa version of Tora! Tora! Tora! and what would have been his final collaboration with Toshiro Mifune.

Well that was a bummer, if not entirely a surprise. I ordered myself some Bose earbuds - I have a pair of wired Bose noise-cancelling headphones that are excellent. I've been struggling with background noise recently so I splashed out, they arrived today, set them up - they even stayed in my earhole ( amazing ) then the right side started crackling. I'd read in a review someone had this same fault. So.... they're now parcelled up with a returns label.
The Apple ones look like bars of soap - no way they'll stay in my ear. Any advice guys?

I use Pixel Bud Pro 2s, and they're pretty good. They replaced a pair of midrange Beats wireless earbuds, and I'll never give that company another dime. They were fucking shit.

JBL Vibe Beam earbuds. I have a pair and love them. They're 40% off at Amazon right now.

If you have trouble keeping them in your ears you might try open-ear options. I use a pair of OpenRock Sports "earbuds." They hook over the ear and they're a little larger than most earbuds, but the sound is better. I can wear them for hours, while "in-ear" earbuds drive my crazy.

Oh that's good intel - cheers. Yea, the Bose came with different sized grips - like the canal one and an outer one, but the right ear was not secure. I have floppy ears ( not like a bunny but hardly any cartilage! ) so I was looking at the earhooks. I'll look up the reviews of yours.

Mine is the OpenRock S. It's still available, and they have an S2 version now.
