The AI & Data Center Thread

The shrinking population of Japan is drastically reducing their skilled labor pool. Japan is at the forefront of implementing AI driven robotics for construction.

Heavy earth moving equipment such as bulldozers and graders are becoming fully automated and remotely monitored while giving AI immediate control of task management, replacing hundreds of good paying skilled and management jobs.

Construction robots are able, and have been building high rise structures, with evermore reductions in the need for human labor.

This AI driven equipment WILL replace many, many skilled jobs simply because business seeks profits.

Cite for the claim that robots are building hi-rises.

Apparently Anthropic's Claude AI has identified a CRISPR-like gene manipulation procedure called ART (array-associated reverse transcriptase). It's untested but the possibilities could mean the end of some genetic diseases.

Possibly AI could cure some diseases.
Possibly AI could create some diseases.
Developers could introduce features into AI that would disable it from creating havoc and disease. Trump doesn't want such features although AI developers say they are needed.

Why is Japan still building towers for a shrinking population?

AI companies to the public: Beware! AI might kill us!

AI companies to potential investors: Just a little more cash!

This is actually old news. Japan has been developing automated high rise building since the 1990s. There are many (>20) standing buildings that were built this way.

Development and Application of an Automated High-rise Building Construction

by Junichiro Maeda

The SMART system controls all phases of building construction from underground to structure work and finishing and equipment work by implementing automation technologies under an all-weather protection system.

The system automates a wide range of construction procedures, including erection and welding of steel frames, laying of concrete floor planks, installation of exterior and interior wall panels, and installation of various other units under its all-weather protection covering.

When all the works of a floor are finished, the construction plant is lifted-up by its lifting mechanism. And also, a computer integrated management system has been introduced. Through the application of this system, a safe and comfortable work site unaffected by weather was realized, and reduction in labor requirements, elimination of hazardous works, reduction of construction period and reduction in construction wastes were also achieved.

It was expensive and fell out of use for a while but the research has continued. Now the increasing labor shortages and recent advances in robotics, sensors, and networking with AI controls are making it more attractive and cost effective again.

This paper released in 2003 describes the capabilities and advantages that have been in use since the 1990s and includes assessments of the equipment limitations and what would be required to make it work better, things that have been developing quickly in the last several years.

The U.S. economy keeps powering through inflation, tariffs and higher borrowing costs, defying a run-up in Treasury yields and a Fed rate increase. That has the bond market spooked.
The usual economic brakes aren’t slowing growth, hiring or an AI investment boom that looks to be unstoppable. To some, AI’s potential returns seem so bright that even steep interest rates won’t slow down tech companies’ investments.

With increasing borrowing costs, the potential to increase corporate profits by eliminating millions of jobs, and the strengthening of the corporate surveillance state, what could possibly go wrong with such a tech bubble?

It's a no-brainer. Take BabyBoomer's advice. Borrow lots of money and invest right now!

I suspect the AI data center investment bubble will soon burst, sacrificing a few corporations while leaving public investors holding an empty bag.

So far there aren’t enough profits coming in to cover the huge costs. The big actors working the scene know this and are rushing to get centers built. At some point the construction corporations will be looted and will fold, then the assets will be bought by other billionaires and corporate entities at pennies on the dollar.

There probably won’t even be any bailouts, just an evaporation of public investment and 401ks.

Please show me where I advised anyone to borrow lots of money and invest right now. I’ll wait.
It's called satire.

Data center construction is in a bubble right now. With fuel costs going way up and consumers facing inflation, consumer markets will shrink. Most data center applications are based on reducing corporate labor costs and tracking consumers to sell them more stuff

This bubble shall pass. Continue to invest in it at your own peril.

It wasn't satire, you intentionally made a false statement which you attributed to someone else.

That's called LYING.

Thanks for acknowledging that I’m not advising anyone to invest in AI or anything else. I’ve pointed the obvious. AI and data centers are not going away. There are roughly 4,000 operational data centers in the US and at least 1500 more in the pipeline, many of which are hyperscale. Most operational data centers are running at 99.99% capacity.

This isn’t speculative. It’s happening now. The demand for compute resources is nearly insatiable. Always has been. It’s not gonna slow down.

Data centers power the internet, cell phones, and most of the technology we use.

I don't like building them on farmlands or other vital land. I think we need to be careful about them.

And they're one mor reason we need to upgrade the power grid.

I think they should be buried underground. It would muffle any noise and be about as insulated as possible to help cooling and thereby requiring less energy to operate.

There are companies such as NVIDIA who are now offering “home data centers” for private AI usage. They’re ~ $5k - $10k and can be operated from your own on or off-grid power system. People will be able to run their own network of domestic robotics from them.

The processing power isn’t the same as whats available via cloud based online services, but it’s rare you’d actually require more when using AI in an app on your cellphone.

No water or power thirsty corporate data center required.

Interesting. A little bit futuristic for the typical household in 2026, but by 2030, it’s not hard to imagine “home data centers” on people’s Christmas lists. Apple is already there.

Interestingly enough, China is promoting an open source model while the US is promoting a closed source system.

WSJ has an interesting article out today about the Doomers. Paywall but worth reading if you can get to it. They’re weird. They worry about the end of humanity, but seem to have a lot of fun while they worry. Rooftop happy hours, cocktails with doomsday names. Get togethers in tropical venues. Clothing optional dips in the ocean. Counting the $ money they’re rolling in. lol.
