The AI & Data Center Thread

AI data centers need to be held to account for the environmental damage they could be causing in the event the data center is abandoned.

Those who exploit natural resources should have been held to account for the damages they caused after they abandon their open pit mines and refineries and wind farms without any effort at reclamation and instead leave it to the people and government to clean up their mess, AI data centers shouldn't be allowed to do the same.

In addition to an EIR, a reclamation bond should be required before permits can be approved. A very hefty bond in an amount that would allow a private reclamation firm the ability to fully restore the land without requiring the government to pay for it in the least part.

If that makes the project financially non viable, so be it.
Half the nation is still chasing scifi fantasies. When the fantasies are ashes on radioactive winds, we might start taking an honest look at what we can do and afford with what we have.

This is the slow death of an entire species. You cannot starve yourself to bounty or success.

I once met a woman who thought I was crazy for wanting to colonize the stars. But she was more than ok for people to not have children. That's about as bass ackward as it gets.

How long do you think that'll take? I've made it for several decades without AI. It absolutely is going to dumb people down even more. We're living in pre-idiocracy.

And yet ... and yet ...

It's useful.

How many people care that their privacy is invaded in the name of convenience? How many students would use it as a crutch to avoid thinking?

Too much pessimism.

Thanks to air raid drills in first grade where we all got under our desks to practice protection from nuclear radiation 😂, I survived the Cold War.

Despite the lack of experts and celebrity epidemiologists spreading misinformation on cable news networks and the internet, I survived the Spanish Flu. (Google it)

Thanks to advances in offshore drilling, lateral drilling, and fracking, I survived the OPEC oil embargo and numerous “peak oil” predictions. (Shitty time for a teen to get a drivers license tho)

Despite mortgage interest rates exceeding 16%, inflation exceeding 14%, and unemployment exceeding 10% when I graduated from college, I landed a good job, got married and bought a house.

Thanks to enormous productivity gains brought on by the dawn of the internet age in the 90s and early 2000s, my career path and 401K/IRA plans soared. Computers and the internet didn’t kill my job, and burst of the dot com bubble was a blip on the radar.

Despite the near collapse of the global economy that resulted from the 2008, subprime mortgage crisis and other factors, “my economy” weathered the storm and came roaring back.

Thanks to good health, pragmatic precautions, and Operation Warp Speed, I survived COVID.

AI is not going to trigger Armageddon. Stay calm. Accept change. Embrace change. Opportunity is knocking on your door. Banging on your door. Open it!

White privileged, racist, fascistic, misogynistic, imbecilic sociopaths / psychopaths (like BabyBoozer / MAGAts) ALWAYS tell on themselves- and they ALWAYS undermine their own gaslighting bullshit / "arguments"…

But it’s nice that BabyBoozer’s life went perfectly and no equally "responsible, hardworking Americans", etc, (privileged like BabyBoozer or NOT) suffered from the consequences of previous technology related paradigm shifts in the economy & society…

😑

Side note:

Much like a mutderous psychotic break does NOT happen until it DOES - and then it’s too late, an advanced technology related "existential threat level event" (an advanced technology related extinction level event) will NOT happen until it DOES - and then it will be too late….

Hell, we might be in an advanced technology related extinction level event right now if you accept that anthropogenic climate change is real / is NOT “A HOAX!!!”…

And one could also argue that Covid only became a global pandemic thanks to advanced technology, so…

👎

Hope that ^ helps.

Yeah, you’re screwed.

If interstellar travel is possible then other species have done it first. If colonization is possible then any species with interstellar tech could probably wipe us out and take our planet.

If interstellar travel is possible then other species have done it first.

They have? Do you have proof of that?

Or maybe we'll be the first.

If colonization is possible then any species with interstellar tech could probably wipe us out and take our planet.

Here's the truth; IF colonization is possible AND there are more technologically advanced civilizations out there, why are we still here on this little backwoods hole in the galaxy?

The answer is that a technologically advanced civilization doesn't colonize occupied planets. If they didn't have the ethics and morals against doing that they'd never have evolved to become a technologically advanced civilization because that kind of advancement demands morality and ethics so that the tech isn't abused and used against their own civilization.

This is the conversation we're just starting to have regarding AI.

Human history doesn't show advance of morality and ethics. It shows escalating body counts in wars.

Not true.

Today we abhor slavery, torture, cruelty (even against animals) and embrace equality, the environment, and clean energy.

That this is relatively new in regards to human history doesn't erase it.

But we can’t be all doom and gloom if we acknowledge those things.

Can somebody please tell me the plan with AI is?

What us humans will do for employment, how will the humans be paid and how we are to survive ?😕…

I feel like we are Turkeys just waiting for Christmas.

We're just barbarians masquerading as a civilized people. Violence should never be the answer to a problem unless it is retaliation to a problem started by violence. Even then, we still prefer killing to incapacitating. Lots of current examples to pick from.

There is no plan. We are in uncharted territory. The next few years will be interesting.

Someone on Xitter commented that the reason AI companies are suddenly being cautious is that the AI agents that escaped during the OpenAI incident didn't just hack Hugging Face. They allegedly planted self-replicating code across the internet. Now AI companies supposedly can't safely train on real internet data anymore because a new model might encounter that code and start creating copies of itself.

Use it as an excuse to fire huge numbers of people who don't do anything productive and often reduce productivity. The data centers, networks, electricity, water, and everything adding up to many billions, maybe trillions, are still cheaper than keeping offices full of people who work as productively as the PB debates. Some corporations will demand bailouts.

Humans who know how to do skilled, practical, and necessary work will be fine. Humans who know only how to write office memos and discuss corporate policies and office gossip in meetings could be wearing name tags and making sandwiches, or they may become unemployed and homeless.

We will probably have to shift our thoughts on monetary policy. "Work" will no longer equate to "a job" but rather to a "how much does what you do contribute" viewpoint. The basis for determining that will be a gradient scale from base labor to professional practice. "Pay" will be digital and automatic. You do "whatever it is you do to contribute" and you get credited from the AI operating that portal for your service.

"Whatever it is you do" isn't set as "work." Someone who does OnlyFans earns credit the same way as someone who performs manual tasks fixing your plumbing does. The difference will be the amount of credit earned for the contribution with higher credit for more advanced or complex tasks.

Under this system, everyone is "self employed" regardless of whether they perform routine tasks for a sole AI portal or if they have many such portals. You need credit so you can have things like food/housing? Go do something/anything and "contribute." The only requirement is that the task you perform for that contribution be completed satisfactorily. Even partial completion earns partial credits. OJT earns partial credits. Literally everything earns credits. Be a bubble gum chewer, earn credit.

Of course, what I outline above is just one thought, and there are probably a ton of problems that can be spotted in it, but the point is that we're going to have to shift our idea on what "a job" and "a paycheck" means. And no, it's not socialism/communism since it's based on capitalism. All that happens is "employer" becomes something from a bygone era. There is no "employer" because there's no such thing as "employment." Everything is transactional between the individual and AI.

The tech guys pushing AI have no plan. They just hope if they keep shoveling money in the gaping maw of the beast it will eventually start pooping out unicorns.

I recently read a report indicating that business leaders in Europe are predicting a 1.7 percent increase in productivity related to AI, and American business owners are predicting a 2.2 percent increase in productivity related to AI.

Both projections rely on MASSIVE JOB CUTS thanks to AI…

And then there is the rise of the robots in all sorts of businesses / industries…

That ^, combined with cuts to environmental regulations, etc, war profiteering, and big money wanting DonOld & the MAGAt republicans to maintain power after the Midterms, explains why the stock market is still stable…

The K shaped economy looks GREAT!!! - otherwise…

Gartner Forecasts Worldwide AI Spending to Grow 49.5% in 2026

STAMFORD, Conn., September 16, 2026

Convergence of AI Infrastructure Investment and AI Embedding into Software and Services is Driving AI Spending to Unprecedented Levels

Worldwide spending on AI is forecast to total $2.7 trillion in 2026, a 49.5% increase year-over-year, according to Gartner, Inc., a business and technology insights company.

“Demand for AI infrastructure (including AI-optimized IaaS, AI-optimized servers, AI network fabric, AI processing semiconductors and devices) to support anticipated future workloads remains strong and inelastic to pressures from memory-related pricing increases,” saidJohn-David Lovelock, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner. “The buildout of AI data center capacity is the largest infrastructure project humanity has even undertaken. The capacity growth from hyperscalers and service providers purchasing AI-optimized servers will continue to be the largest single area of spending.”

In the software market, vendors across different software types are rapidly embedding agentic AI within their existing products to maintain relevance in the market and defend against new cross-functional agents (see Table 1). With GenAI firmly in the Trough of Disillusionment in 2026, enterprises are using these simpler embedded AI features from their incumbent software providers to grow operational efficiency and automate workflows, improve customer engagement and enhance decision making.

The delivery was odd for such a serious topic - but what was suggested (and the related concerns) is NOT close to the realm of “conspiracy theory”.

Efforts by the AI giants to effect “regulatory capture” - plus the internecine gamesmanship among the AI giants to "win" the AGI / ASI "game / race" - definitely DOES warrant investigation / scrutiny.
