The Baker's Assistant (closed)

"Like I said before, love... the time you 'ave is more important than Al's age. If you don' take 'im, y'might never find someone your age 'r younger tha' you love like him. Then y'won't have anyone. An' y'can never tell how long a person'll live. Al could outlive you by decades. An' tha's not even considerin' anythin' else that could happen. Don't wait." Leon kissed her cheek again before going to help Dazu and Lucy.

Soon, Kayla had Lynn bundled up for the short walk home. The little boy was asleep against her shoulder, worn out from playing with his cousin and the hearty meal that he had devoured. She smiled as he mumbled things in his sleep, so much like the father that he would never know. Gale had the bad habit of talking in his sleep and she could see that her son would be very much the same way.

When Kayla returned, there was a little note on her door left by her cousin Alex, a little reminder that Lyndon was due for a checkup with Valentina just to make sure he was growing properly. Valentina had a long-standing tradition from Vincenzo to do yearly checkups for children until the age of eight. Her preemption had caught many health risks and growing issues early, allowing her to make sure the children effected could grow up mostly, if not entirely normally with good habits and some preventative measures."

Kayla saw the note and promised that she would take Lynn in the morning or sometime that week. She soon had the baby tucked into his warm spot by the fire, sleeping beneath the blanket that his great-grandmother and his grandmother had made for him before he was born. He looked so peaceful while he were sleeping, very much like a little angel instead of the imp that he could be.

She turned from the crib to let her son sleep. Making herself a mug of tea, she realized just how lonely she was without Aleister there. She missed talking to him, laughing with him, sharing ideas and wants together. They had a lot in common, even with their large age gap. Her home was so much more empty without him there.

The next morning was Saturday, and all went according to usual as Kayla arrived a bit early. Aleister had been up since before dawn as always and the bakehouse was in full production. Dash would arrive a bit later, exactly the same time as he did every day.

As Kayla hung up her cloak, Aleister appeared from the bakehouse carrying the trays of cooled bread and rolls, putting them up on the shelves in neat rows. "Hiya, lass," he said with his usual small smile.

"Hi." Kayla said as she took Lynn to his spot in the corner of the bake house and made sure that he had his toys and a snack to keep him occupied. "Aleister, I think we need to talk."

Aleister stopped short when she said that, and the worry was clear in his expression. "Somethin' wrong?" He asked, setting the trays aside.

"No, nothing's wrong." Kayla said as he looked at her slightly startled. "I've just been thinking about everything. I realized...I don't want to be alone anymore. My house is too quiet at night when you aren't there."

Aleister smiled softly to her. "Well, if y'don' mind my little place til I expand, y'know yer free t'come make it yer own."

"It might be a little cramped with Lynn. He has more needs than I do." Kayla said as she looked towards her son with a smile. "But I suppose we could make it work."

Aleister stepped forward then to wrap Kayla up in his arms and kiss her with a gentle warmth despite the excitement she could feel behind it. "Yer welcome t'come an' move in any time, love."

"Maybe this summer. When you've made some firm plans for the shop." Kayla said, returning his kiss with a sweet passion.

Aleister wasn't quite sure what to do with himself, feeling suddenly giddy as a teenager as his love kissed him and told him they were going to live together. Lynndon finally brought him back to the present by tugging on his trouser leg to get some attention too, jealous of his mother. Aleister let Kayla go with a smile, leaning down to scoop the boy up.

Lynn squealed with happiness as he was scooped up by the man that adored him. Kayla smiled as Lynndon hugged Aleister tightly around the neck.

"What do you say, Lynn? Are we ready to be a little family?" Kayla asked, kissing her son's cheek gently.

As Lynn clung to Aleister and enjoyed all the attention, Aleister gave Kayla a smile. "I may no' have a lot t'offer in th'way o'luxury, Kay, but I can make sure we always have what we need. You an' Lynn'll never go without a meal 'r have t'worry too much if we come upon 'ard times."

"Aleister, if I were worried about that, I would have gone back to Edinburgh and married a wealthy Duke. I don't need fancy things to make me happy. I need a happy child and a good man at my side."

"I don' know about good, but loving, yes," he leaned in to kiss her once more, Lynn cradled between them.

"Well, you certainly do your best to make me happy." Kayla said with a happy smile on her features as Aleister leaned in to kiss her one more time. "And you love Lynn even though he isn't your flesh and blood. What more could I ask for?"

"It's hard not t'love the lad. An' you... I was pretty charmed with you th'moment y'spoke t'me."

"You were frightening. I thought that you wouldn't want someone like me working in your shop, especially with everything so uncertain." Kayla said as Aleister confessed that he had liked her since the moment he had first seen her. "And I'm happy that everything worked out."

"Well, y'know now tha' I'm jus' a gruff, mean ol' baker who likes t'scare away pretty young lasses, but I'm pretty harmless."

"You better scare away all those young lasses. I'm the only lass you'll need from now on." Kayla said as Lynndon hugged Aleister tightly and let out a little sigh at having his attentions. "I'm going to take him for a checkup at noon and then I'm going to start packing for our trip to Edinburgh. Would you watch him while I pack?"

"Absolutely. Though y'might 'ave a hard time gettin' 'im away from me," Aleister said with a small grin, cuddling Lynndon close and pressing a kiss to his forehead.

"He loves you." Kayla said as she leaned in and kissed Aleister gently with a grin. "As much as his Ma loves you, I would wager."

"An' I love both of you," Aleister murmured, returning her kiss with one hand coming to rest on her cheek while the other arm held Lynndon to his chest. "Go on, love. I'll keep 'im entertained."
