The Baker's Assistant (closed)

Kayla smiled at Aleister as he held Lynn so carefully. It was almost as if Gale had been watching out for her all along, giving her a man in her life that would love and protect her like he no longer could. She nodded and left the two in the bakery as she went back home to pack some things before returning to gather up Lynn for his checkup.

The little boy was bright and cheerful as they waited on Alex, playing with one of his wooden horses without a care in the world.

"Your grandma will spoil you rotten, little one." Kayla promised as she thought about Marianne finally getting to meet the little boy.

When Alex arrived, he was as focused and serious about his job as ever. When he stepped in, however, he smiled at the sight of Kayla and Lynndon. "Hello, sweetheart," he kissed her cheek and then greeted Lynn with a smile. Though he was only a bit older than her and had just passed his Master Exam, many other healers commented that it was as if he'd been a healer his whole life. And while he was technically a fully-fledged doctor like his grandfather and mother, he never used the title. People trusted more in the old fashioned 'healer' title in Inverness.

"You look great, Kay. So does he," Alex commented as he set his bag aside.

"He's fussy at bedtime." Kayla murmured as Alex commented that both she and Lynn looked well. "And he can be a terror when it's time to nap. I think the only one that can ever get him to finally calm down is Aleister."

"How are things going with your Baker anyway?" Alex asked with a little smile, taking Lynn and beginning to check him over.

"They're going well." Kayla said with a smile as he took Lynn and started his checkup. "He's going to expand the bakery and then...I think we'll move in together."

"Good. You two work well together in more ways than one. And I've seen the way Aleister looks at this little lad," Alex smiled at the boy, sitting him down and giving him little tests.

"Aleister loves him like he were his own." Kayla commented as Lynndon watching Alex work with a curiosity that told of his youth. "I think he's felt that Lynn really is his son for a long time. I know he wants children of his own, however."

"He'd make a good father. Quiet maybe, but patient for sure," Alex nodded. "And you already make a lovely mother." He leaned down to listen to Lynn's heart, chuckling when the boy took his hands.

"Lynn, love, let Alex work." Kayla said with a smile towards her son as he tried his hardest to distract the serious healer.

"He's far more cooperative than some children I've worked with," Alex murmured with a smile, distracting Lynn with a honey sweet while Alex checked his ears and nose. When Alex was satisfied, he smoothed Lynn's hair back fondly. "No crying and no struggling? You make my life a lot easier, little man." Alex put away the few instruments he'd used, and looked to Kayla. "And how are you? I know Ma and Papa are your caretakers, but I want to make sure you're doing well too."

"I'm perfectly fine." Kayla said as Alex turned his attentions towards her after he finished with Lynn. "A few moments of depression here and there but nothing terribly serious."

"Depression? That's not nothing, love." Alex sat down with her. "Is it always about Gale?" He asked softly. He hated to ask, but he needed to make sure it wasn't more than just a broken heart, considering some mothers sometimes experienced depression after giving birth, and it could be immediate or take a year to set in.

"Of course it's about Gale. He was my heart and it makes me sad that he'll never know his son." Kayla commented to her cousin. "He would have adored this little boy."

"He would have," Alex nodded with a sigh. "I just want to make sure you're okay. Physically and emotionally. It wouldn't do for my sweet cousin to be sad all the time. If it gets any worse, let me know."

"I worry about everyone and everything," Alex chuckled, rising from his seat. "I'd better get back to Ma. She'll want a full report about Lynn." He picked up his bag and ruffled Lynn's hair before kissing Kayla's cheek. "I'll see you around, love. Enjoy your trip to Edinburgh."

Kayla nodded as Alex left, commenting about their trip to Edinburgh. She turned and looked at Lynndon as he stared at her curiously. She gave him a small smile and scooped him up, kissing his cheeks until he was a giggling mess.

"Are you ready to meet your Grandma?" Kayla asked as Lynndon hugged her tightly and sighed as he curled against her. "She's eager to meet you, love. You're the only thing she really has left in this world."

The journey to Edinburgh came and went quickly. By the time Kayla and Lynndon arrived at the courtyard gates, it felt as if no time had passed at all. Royal guards awaited them in fine uniforms and patrol armor, the captain standing before the gates to welcome Kayla personally. When her carriage halted, he opened the door. "Milady, welcome back," he murmured with a bow, offering her a hand to help her down with Lynndon.

"Thank you, Captain." Kayla said with a kind smile, taking his hand to step down from the carriage with Lynn in her arms. "It's good to be back."

Lynndon was shy in her arms in the new surroundings, snuggled against her shoulder as he looked around for Aleister on his horse. As soon as he saw the man, he instantly wanted to be held by him for comfort and security.

Seeing Lynn reach for him, Aleister slipped from his horse's saddle and came to scoop him up, making the captain raise an eyebrow. "I hadn't heard you would be bringing a guest. And you are?"

"Aleister MacNamara, of Inverness," Aleister murmured, smoothing back Lynndon's hair soothingly.

"He's helped to raise Lynndon." Kayla said as Lynndon hugged Aleister tightly, letting himself be soothed. "Marianne and Warwick know about him."

Seeing the boy clearly familiar with Aleister, the captain let the potential security risk go. "Forgive my doubts, milady. I'm very protective of Her Majesty. She's the only one left." He nodded to Aleister and while some men carried their things, he escorted them into the palace and to the guest chambers. Once there, he paused, looking between Kayla and Aleister. "... Will Master MacNamara be requiring a separate room?"

Kayla paused at that question, turning to look at Aleister. They still kept their own private houses even though they spent nearly every single evening together. He had started making plans to expand his apartments to accommodate Lynndon and herself, but this was the first time that she had really been asked about the both of them.

"No." Kayla said softly, turning back to face the Captain with a decisive look on her face. "Mr. McNamara and I intend to be respectful about our relationship while here to honor Gale's memory, but there is no need for another room."

"Yes milady." The captain opened the door for them and gave them keys. "When you're ready, Her Majesty will receive you in the upper parlor. I'm sure you remember the way, but staff will be around to show you if needed. And Master MacNamara is of course welcome as well."

"Thank you." Kayla said with a smile as the door was closed behind the Captain.

Kayla turned to look at Aleister with Lynndon, chuckling as the little boy clung to him tightly. "Little Lynn, this is your home. Your Da loved me in these very halls."

She kissed Lynndon's cheek and looked up at Aleister with a small smile. "I know he's too young to know what any of that means."
