The Crafting Thread - Show Us What You've Made!

I finally started crafting again. This is a prototype for a snowflake Christmas ornament. I'm going to work on the bead placement with the next ones I make, but I don't think this one turned out half-bad, considering I was kinda winging it with the beading. (I did have a pattern to follow for the snowflake itself, though.)

I love it!
It looks different than the pattern I use, which is cool because I always hate then snowflakes are the same, since real ones are never the same, so I intentionally make mistakes and mis counts in them when I make them ....
😏😋😂

I really should learn to read (and execute) patterns. These are really sweet and I wonder if I’d be able to make one as well, maybe a little larger one to hang on the front door.

I don't see why not! I used regular yarn and a 5.0 mm hook. I would think if you used chunky or super chunky yarn plus a larger hook, you could get one the size you wanted.

(If you ever need help with pattern-reading, I'll be glad to help if I can!)

Thanks! Maybe I’ll give this a go. I have black chunky yarn, so I could easily test it. A black snowflake could be a commentary on climate change or pollution or something. 😁

I picked up my knitting project from ages ago. It’s socks for J. I finished one back in the day and I’m now working on a pair for it, but after a break of over a year from knitting, I’m struggling a lot. I regret my choices.

Like why didn’t I just make the first sock smooth in the first place? Why did I ever decide to make stripes with purls on top of the foot? It’d be so much easier if I could just knit knit knit like the wind. Damn those purls. And why did I think it’d be fun and whimsical if the stripes weren’t all the same width? It’s just damn tedious to try to make a matching pair. Sigh.

Oh, man, that sounds like something I'd do and also regret later. I hope it comes together for you as easily as it possibly can!

Well I couldn’t make heads or tails of the pattern Bunny linked, because I just don’t understand what those words are.

I went down the rabbit hole of figuring out how the crochet words I know relate to the American terminology and it was…weird. And then there was that issue of starting with a magic circle which is some higher level witchcraft to me because whenever I try it, I end up with a knot and not with something crochet-able.

So in the end I recruited my friend to help me, because she’s good at knitting and crocheting. Yesterday, on the breaks between movies at a film festival we were at, she taught me to crochet a snowflake. She even had white yarn that she graciously brought me. It’s not perfect, it was the first time I did many of the things, and it’s not the same pattern Bunny made.

It’s about 20 cm/7.5” across. I think I should have used a bit larger hook for the yarn to make the pattern a little clearer, but I only had the one hook with me yesterday.

You did such a good job, seela! I love it! Excellent snowflake. :)

Thanks! I somehow screwed up the bit where the first and last point join, so I’ll have to figure it out before I make another one. It wasn’t as difficult to make as I assumed, though, which was nice.

One day I’ll figure out how to make a grub from the Hollow Knight, which has been my main crocheting goal for years. The relative success with the snowflake was encouraging!

I made two more snowflakes, small ones now. With a non-fuzzy yarn the pattern is a lot clearer, which is both good and bad. I also tried two different hook sizes.

Hi everyone!! I love a good crafting thread 🥰

This is the Somerset pattern from the 52 Weeks of Socks book and it has been tricky to say the least. After months of various attempts, I am ready to move onto the gusset and heel portion.

That isssss intimidating but sooooo exciting, as most of my interests seem to mirror 😋

This is really pretty! 🤩 I only dream of being able to make something cool like this one day! It’s also so smart to do both socks at the same time, because then you avoid the pain that I’m in, that one sock is done and I’m somehow trying to piece together a pair for it…

I dropped a stitch in my sock project and I don’t know how to fix it. I’m taking the sock to the same friend who last weekend taught me to crochet the snowflake and hope she will rescue the situation. 😂

It’s the first time I’ve really dropped a stitch in a major way. Not that I’m an experienced knitter in any way, so there hasn’t been that many opportunities for that to happen… I’ve knitted exactly two pairs of socks before and a little square where I practiced knits and purls when I first started. That’s my level of experience.

But maybe one day I’m a pro like Eva clearly is!

Love this. Even the photo is artistic

These are gorgeous! I wish I could knit like this. You've clearly put a lot of practice into your craft. Fantastic job! :)

Crochet commissions I'm about to take to my friend's shop to sell! There were supposed to be two of the Little Debbie Christmas tree cakes (one vanilla and one chocolate), too, but those turned out so badly I was embarrassed to even take them over there, so they're staying at home, lol.

They’re all great but especially the lights are extremely cute! 🤩

I made a reflector. It was the first time for me so it’s far from perfect. I need to figure out how to get the fabric flat.

It’s Lace (“white” on black background) on one side and the other side is Lost Lace (black on “white” background) from Silksong. Lost Lace should only have white eyes, not a white face, but I couldn’t get the eyes look remotely decent and it didn’t end up looking recognizable, so I went for the whole face instead. It’s good to have more reflective surface anyways.

Someone smarter would have chosen a simpler design for their first project. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I like the idea, though, so I think I’ll try again after I’ve gotten a bit of practice, and this time I’ll use a scalpel to get the shape better. Scissors were too clumsy for something that tiny and detailed, at least on my skill level.

My Silksong themed reflector adventures continue…

A two sided thing again. The pearls are on theme too, because you collect rosaries in the game and the beads make up a rosary chain. Ish. I’m not sure I’ll leave them on, I’ll think about it.

My scalpel work needs practice, it was a lot harder than I thought it’d be. The film on top of the reflective fabric made it difficult to cut. Small things are tricky!

It was my first time putting on an eyelet and I’m super proud of how well it turned out! The ironing is a bit better than previously, though. So some progress has been made, yay.

J asked me what I want for Christmas. I said a new beanie would be good, because the one I’m mostly wearing currently is getting kind of tattered.

He got me a beanie, some assembly required. 😂

It’s a really soft and luxurious yarn made of local sheep’s wool and hand dyed. I’ve never knitted anything with chunky yarn like that before, so I think I’ll need to do a some practice knitting with something a little more industrial, yarn-wise, before getting started with that fancy yarn.

Oh, I love getting yarn as a gift!

You'll do great with it. I understand doing a practice run beforehand, though. I find that knitting with chunky yarn is easier (for me) than with standard-sized yarn. Good luck, my friend! I hope you enjoy your hat when you get it done. :)
