The future is dense, walkable cities.

Here’s the problem with Utopian Girls little plan. You couldn’t build a “Walkable City” in the US if you wanted to. The mixed-use and dense construction codes have already been basically outlawed by the Boomers to prevent people from doing what they want with their own land…which is the real point of this argument.

BSG has fallen into the trap of Marxist thinking whether she knows it or not. It’s not my fault your zoning laws prevent me from living in a city because I have to drive to where my place of business is.

Nobdy should HAVE to. Most motorists do not enjoy it like you do.
Then those individuals are free to choose to live in the city. People who do not wish to live in the city and would prefer a suburb should not have that choice taken away from them.

Exactly. This isn’t an argument about the pros/cons of walkable green space, it’s all about choice and power. Specifically THEIR power to dictate what you can and can’t do on YOUR own land.

It’s not what this country was founded on. When BSG gets some skin in the game, she’ll understand.

Until the world takes that choice away from them by running out of oil. Suburbia was never more than a temporary condition of the fossil fuel age.

A big part of the modern urbanist movement is changing the laws so we can build more density. Getting rid of parking minimums, for example, or allowing small buildings to have a single staircase. If you care about property rights you can help the YIMBYs fight the NIMBYs. We always need more voices at city council meetings.

No one is going to take your car away. We just want cities to be designed for the people who live there.

Most suburbs prohibit front yard edible gardening. They may be forced to change as food becomes more expensive and suburbanites demand liberty.

The primary reason suburbs will depopulate is the distance between homeowners' land and anything else. Automakers are now required to load their cars with devices that somewhat increase mpg but vastly decrease durability. Cars are now designed to run only 100,000 miles. Old cars with simpler tech are becoming much more valuable as they become recognized for durability. Biking more is an adaptation that can somewhat work for a while. Moving freight, water, electricity, and everything else out to suburbs also use more energy, plus the losses. Steel wires lose electricity as heat. Pipes leak. And the extra miles of roads all need more maintenance for the heavy vehicles that Americans love, especially the heavier electric cars and the trucks that deliver our shopping. All cars could run on unicorn farts and we'd still run out of oil to build the roads.

The secondary reason is suburban homes use more energy, in heating and cooling lost through the walls and windows, lights, lawnmowing until edible gardening becomes standard, etc. With more and better insulation, older suburban homes can be improved, but they're still huge. 2000 square feet will never be as efficient as 300 square feet. The higher energy use and higher energy cost of delivering that energy to suburban homes add up to nope, we won't have that anymore.

Loads of new compact walkable neighborhoods have been built recently in the US. Database of examples. Another list of examples.

We’ve subsidized sprawl long enough. If you want to live a country lifestyle do it on your own dime.
I already do and without wishing you cave dwelling city people any harm. Honestly I don't give a fuck how you live. Just leave us country folk alone...Although...Perhaps if you hate us so much maybe we shouldn't ship food or building materials into your perfect enclaves. We could cut production or perhaps export more.

I could have said it in guy language 52 pages ago. Wasting money, fuel, and land on suburban sprawl makes America weak, vulnerable, and dependent on vanishing resources, including imported resources from frenemy and adversarial nations.

The country folk will be fine, if they haven't forgotten how to ride horses, hitch a horse to a plow, etc. We will need more farmers. They will eventually be the majority of the population, probably around 90%.

Indoor grow farms, particularly through methods like vertical farming, can significantly increase crop yields, potentially producing 10 to 20 times more per acre compared to traditional farming. However, while they offer a promising solution to food scarcity, further advancements and research are needed to fully meet the demands of a growing population.

Potential of Indoor Grow Farms

Indoor grow farms, especially those utilizing vertical farming techniques, have the potential to significantly increase food production. They can yield 10 to 20 times more crops per acre compared to traditional farming methods. This high efficiency is crucial as the global population is projected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050, creating immense pressure on food resources.

Advantages of Indoor Farming

  • Higher Yields: Vertical farms can produce much more food in a smaller area.
  • Year-Round Production: These farms can operate regardless of seasonal changes, allowing for consistent food supply.
  • Reduced Resource Use: Indoor farms typically require less land and water than conventional farms.
  • Local Food Production: They can be established in urban areas, reducing transportation costs and emissions.

Challenges to Overcome

Despite their advantages, indoor grow farms face several challenges:
  • High Operating Costs: The energy required for artificial lighting and climate control can be expensive.
  • Technical Knowledge: There is a need for more research and expertise in maximizing crop productivity in controlled environments.
  • Dependence on Technology: Any power outages or technical failures can disrupt production.

Conclusion

While indoor grow farms present a promising solution to food scarcity, further advancements and research are necessary to fully meet the demands of a growing population. They are not a complete solution on their own but can play a significant role in a diversified approach to global food.

Plus doing something about the violent crime problems in majority of America's major cities.
That's parenting and economic opportunity. Cops can't arrest more than a tiny percentage of the population. Parents raise law abiding citizens or we don't have law and order. And then citizens need careers that pay their bills.

cave dwelling city people
As the internet sputters out and people stop zombifying themselves with their phones, urbanites and small walkable town residents will be spending more time out of their homes, at live entertainment venues, parks, community gardens, visiting neighbors, or anything within walking distance. Suburbanites struggling to pay for fuel or riding buses to work spend more time in their homes. Suburbanites with plenty of fuel money may choose homes with longer commutes before they comprehend how much of their lives they will spend in their steel cave cars.

The most obvious exception is the covid lockdown period. That has soured many people on urban life.

Suburbanites are not even close to rural folks. Suburbanites are closer in thought and actions to urbanites. Rural folk are a different breed, we don't care about your entertainment venues, community gardens, or parks. We have our county fairs, local music and comedy venues, honestly I can walk out my door and be deep in the woods in 2 minutes. The issue is we don't give a damn how you live or want to live, and you're obsessed with anyone who doesn't kiss your ass over your chosen lifestyle.

True. Rural folks are a different breed.

Look at TrailerTrash trying soooo hard to be the victim in a thread that has nothing to do with the rural “breed” (inbreds).

And it drives you crazy that you can't control us with your horseshit.

Aw. It's cute you think you aren't being controlled.

You're exactly where they want you, doing exactly what they want you to do, simp.
